Medford Summer Recreation Guide
2014
Your guide to an active summer
GREETINGS FROM MAYOR MICHAEL J. McGLYNN
Welcome to our 2014 Summer Recreation guide. We hope that this brochure, in concert with our web site www.medfordma.org, will prove to be a depository for you and your family when planning your summer activities. We wish to thank the East Cambridge Savings Bank for their fourth consecutive year of support of our parks program through their generous donation. With their support, we are able to provide some of the activities outlined in this brochure along with providing summer jobs for the youth of our city. We will continue to offer two park instructors at the following locations: Carr Park; Harris Park; Morrison Park and Tufts Park. The park program will run from 9 A.M. to 1 P.M. each weekday from July 7th, 2014 to August 15th, 2014. This program is free of charge for 5 to 16 year olds in our community. Locations are subject to change based on attendance. In addition, we have worked with various MHS coaches to offer reduced price athletic camps throughout the summer. For a fee of $55 per week, campers will be able to select a camp that suits their interest. Camps run daily from 9 A.M. to 12 noon. My thanks go to the coaches and their staff for participating in this program! This year, Medford Community Rowing program will continue to offer extensive programming. As you may be aware, Crew is a varsity sport at MHS in the fall and spring seasons and is growing in interest each and every year. We thank MHS Crew and Friends of Medford Rowing for their commitment to this program and for making lessons available to youth and adults this summer at a reasonable price! Tried and true, the Medford Family Network will continue to offer “Traveling Playgroups in the Park” and family concerts at Wrights Pond. The Library will also offer extensive programming with the assistance of two new energetic Librarians hired this year. While some of the programs have a cost associated with them, please inquire if you are in need of financial assistance. We hope that you find this medley of programming of interest to you and your children this summer. Our goal is to keep the kids safe, provide physical fitness and allow them to interact with many of the wonderful people that make Medford a special place to live. Sincerely, Michael J. McGlynn, Mayor

For more than 50 years, the City of Medford has provided a summer recreation program in the parks to keep
youngsters active during summer vacation. The FREE program is open to children ages 5-16 and is on a
drop-in basis.
The objective of the program is to provide recreation for youngsters in the community through sports, games,
physical activities, arts and crafts and more. Instructors, one female and one male at each location, serve as
role models to help instill the values of leadership, acceptance and group cooperation.
The following is a list of locations that are staffed this year:
July 7, 2014 to August 15, 2014
Monday through Friday 9 A.M. to 1 P.M.
Carr Park (Winslow Avenue)
Harris Park (Second Street)
Morrison Park (Central Avenue)
Tufts Park (Main Street)
Locations are subject to change based on attendance so check out www.medfordma.org/recreation. Park
instructors are in the parks (weather permitting) and organize activities based on the interest of those
attending the park that day. In addition, each day a specific activity will be scheduled at a particular park.
See schedule below for planned activities offered from 11 AM to Noon each day and locations:
*Basketball games may include ―21,‖ ―Knockout,‖ or 3 on 3, etc…
**Bat and Ball games may include Baseball, Softball, Stickball or Whiffleball. Please bring a baseball glove with you
if you have one.
ALWAYS bring a drink with you to stay hydrated while participating in any of the park activities throughout the summer.
For the fourth straight year, East Cambridge Savings Bank has donated $10,000 to the City of Medford‘s
Summer Parks Program. The sponsorship assists in funding the Program‘s daily activities to local children
during the summer months.
East Cambridge Savings Bank -- Connecting with the Community.
It‘s something the Bank has been doing for generations: being there for people. Understanding their hopes
and dreams and giving them the help they need to shape their lives and reach their goals.
East Cambridge Savings Bank is located at 243 Salem Street, Medford, MA and coming soon to Playstead
Road.

have much to offer one another - if they are given a chance. Sibshops are a spirited mix of new games (designed to be
unique, off-beat, and appealing to a wide ability range), new friends and discussion activities.
Emarc offers Sibshops for ages 4-7 and 8-13, and 14-18. For more information, please contact Kim Anderson at Emarc‘s Family Resource Center, 781-587-2290 or
