teaser trailers A conventional teaser trailer is usually very short in length in

comparison to a theatrical trailer. A teaser trailer can be anything between 30 to 60 seconds long and contain small clips from the film to give an over view of the story.

Teaser trailers are usually made for big budget films or even popular themed films. A teaser trailers main purpose is to show that the film is up and coming in the near future and also gives a wider audience a chance to see the trailer and not just people who would usually go and watch it. It is also to give small extract of the plot and content to entice the audience more.

Teaser trailers are usually made and released while the film is still being made or edited; this sometimes means that when the film is released some clips that are in the teaser trailer may not be in the film as these were taken out during the editing of the film.

Some teaser trailers have appeared to view over a year before the film is actually released for example the teaser trailer for the incredible was released in may 2003 and the film was released November 2004, that’s a whole 18 months before the film was released.

The Time Travelers Wife In my coursework I had decided to create a teaser trailer for a

romance film. During my research I found out that the teaser trailers for romance films are still fairly long and more like a full length theatrical trailer. One film I found teaser trailers for was “The Time Travelers Wife” there were several different teaser trailers I found for this film approximately 30 second long.

conventions One main convention I found with film trailers for romance films was the kind of

music used in the trailer, all typical romance films such as “the time travellers wife”, “500 days of summer”, “p.s. I love you” and more all have one thing in common and love song for the soundtrack on the trailer.

Whilst planning for my trailer I decided to chose a few songs I might have been able to use as my soundtrack. Originally I chose ‘Eden Roc’ by Ludivico Einaudi, ‘Bright Red Star’ by Stereophonics and ‘The Balcony Scene’ By Craig Armstrong (from Baz Lurhmann’s Romeo and Juliet) The original song i chose was ‘bright red star’ by Stereophonics but realised it was too slow, even though it was a lovely song it just wasn't right. After doing looking through the internet at “upbeat love songs” i found this...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74lxgycxE4Q this was then what i thought was the perfect song it had some of the criteria

that other trailers had with the soundtracke.g.. There was a build up in the music during the trailer

Other conventions of these teaser trailers were; there were lots of different type of transitions between clips such as;

fade to black, quick cuts and dissolving from one slip to another

500 Days of Summer another film i found teaser trailers for was “500 Days of Summer”,

this film is a little different to what i was planning on looking at because this is more of a romantic comedy rather than a simple romance but due to the fact that most romance films revolve around a similar story line i thought using these would be just as useful because they would share similar conventions.TV spot one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfnnMpN-ACETV spot two http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xvo7s7MRPd4&feature=related

Although this was a sub-genre of romance films i still found conventions in it that were echoed in trailers like ‘P.s. I love you’

again the upbeat music appears in in both of these teaser trailers for 500 days of summerthe first is Vagabon by wolfmother http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zsnNDtO6inwthe second is Sweet disposition by Temper Traphttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rxQ6HR9UbA0&feature=related

My trailer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M7VO8KGZCg0 In my trailer i used similar conventions to those used in ‘The time

travelers wife’ and other romance films. The song i ended up using was ‘all we are’ by one republic, I though this

song was good due to the fact that its a love song but it is also upbeat so it helps to keep the trailer moving through quite quickly. To keep the audiences interest.

I also used a variety of transitions, to give my trailer i variety of speeds between clips, i particularly like the dissolve transitions as it’s not too quick, but it is not so fast that it makes it hard to follow.

Another convention i used that i found in most of the trailers i researched was the slight amount of melancholy to the story line to give it twist.I decided to show this quite a lot in my trailer I did this by using the scenes on the train station and also the clip of the burning Polaroid I thought this was a good way to try and show the idea of a break up.

Linking my trailer and my poster.

While i was creating my film trailer i was thinking of ways i could make them link up.I experimented with using a black and white image as the main photograph for the poster but from my feedback i was told that it may look good in colour.

I think i have managed to get my trailer and my film to link fairly well because of the fact that the photograph used in the poster was essentially a still from the trailer. I really like the photo that i used because i feel it is quite sweet and romantic.

For my poster i hoped that it would be obvious of the genre because of how the picture looked, with the couple holding hands.

While i was editing the poster on photoshop i decided to use the faded border on it to make the image a little bit softer, and to also draw the focus onto the couple in the image.

While marketing a film, the trailer and the poster would tend to be advertised around about the same time to entice audiences using multiple media’s. This would mean that the magazine would come out at a slightly different time to the other texts, giving it an almost different look to it. Also because the function of the film being in a magazine tends to be after it is released, means it is more of a review or even and interview with cast form the film.

Page 11: Medai evaluation

My magazine When i was creating my magazine i

decided to base it on ‘Total Film’ magazine, i chose this because i like the simple colour scheme and thought it was a simple but effective magazine.

Page 12: Medai evaluation

My magazine After doing my research

i decided i wanted to have a picture of both myactor and actress, I decided to get a pictureof them looking into each-others eyes, as though they are about to kiss i thought this was a good idea is it portrays the genre well and makes the reader know automatically that this film would be a romance.

Page 13: Medai evaluation

I kept to a simple colour scheme of red, white and black i also managed to follow this on through the photography i used for my magazine

Added other head lines and things that would be involved in the magazine, this would be another thing to entice the reader if they were not interested in the min article

I added in another article about another director.

Continued with the same font and i used in the trailer and on the poster, to keep a theme running through all three, also carried on with the colour scheme in the text.

I took into account when the “release date” of my trailer was and made the date of the magazine June 2010 so it would work well with the trailer.

I used the print screen button on my computer to get the right bar code for my magazine.

I also added another thing that would e used to entice a higher sales of the magazine.

youtube I used youtube a lot for trailer research

and to look at other trailers for ideas about conventions of different trailer.

When i found something i wanted to use in my work i would upload the video to my blog using the url.
