Variable Prescription Orthodontics (VPO)
a new levelof efficiency
Results-Centered Approach with Patient-Centered PrescriptionsThe current norm in orthodontic treatment is to use a
standard set of pre-adjusted brackets to treat a wide
range of malocclusions. Most orthodontists expect
that archwire adjustments will be needed during the
finishing stage of treatment in order to achieve the
desired result.
Variable Prescription Orthodontics (VPO) from
3M is an alternative to this one-size-fits-all approach.
VPO lets you tailor the prescription to the patient’s
specific malocclusion, thereby adding flexibility and
efficiency to the treatment process. With VPO, the need
for time-consuming chairside archwire adjustments,
and the associated treatment time delays usually
required to express the desired torque, may be
reduced or eliminated.
The VPO Advantage: Finishing Efficiency
With VPO, the orthodontist selects the prescription with
a clear understanding of the end result. The clinician can
now combine the precision of VPO with the patient’s
VTO (Visual Treatment Objective), providing a new level
of treatment efficiency.
By including VPO methodology in the diagnosis and
treatment planning process, specific torque selections
lead to time savings during the finishing phase of
treatment. Instead of making time-consuming chairside
archwire adjustments to express the desired finishing
anterior torque, the brackets of the VPO system are
programmed to achieve these torque expressions,
saving valuable clinician time.
Additionally, VPO does not require additional
impressions, scanners, or the cost of custom appliances
and archwires.

Clinical Applications of VPO: Three Clinical Indications for VPO
Comprehensive Torque Application Maxillary and mandibular arches are treated
using the same torque prescription.
Inter-Arch Torque Variation The maxillary and mandibular arches
are treated with different torque values.
This facilitates the management of tooth mass
discrepancies, non-surgical compromises, etc.
Intra-Arch Torque Variation Allows for individualized torque control,
providing differential torque levels between
teeth within the same arch.
Variable Prescription Orthodontics allows for three distinct clinical
applications. These combinations enable the clinician to plan treatment
with a more patient-centered prescription. The three clinical indications
are as follows:
Inventory Management: Simplicity and Ease of Use
Variable Prescription Orthodontics: Torque Control Options
Although there are differences between the various
prescriptions in use today, there is one thing in
common: they are all static systems, where one
prescription must treat the multiple malocclusions
presented to the clinician. Orthodontists using static
prescriptions routinely have to make time consuming
archwire adjustments to compensate for the
prescription’s fixed torque values.
But now there is a dynamic system – an alternative
that offers the versatility of variable prescriptions to
provide an efficient patient-centered solution:
Variable Prescription Orthodontics (VPO) from 3M.
Available Torque OptionsClinical analysis of the different levels of torque
needed to address specific malocclusions allowed
us to develop three distinct torque options:
High Torque: Blue color code
Medium Torque: Green color code
Low Torque: Yellow color code
Inventory management has never been easier.
With the use of 3M’s exclusive APC™ Adhesive
Coated Appliance System, every SmartClip™ SL3 and
Clarity™ SL Bracket is
individually packaged
and labeled with all
needed prescription
information.
But 3M has gone a step further in simplifying bracket
prescription identification for VPO users. All APC
Adhesive Coated SmartClip SL3 and Clarity SL brackets
will have the addition of color coded identification on
each 5-pack box, and on individual bracket blisters.
Blue, green, and yellow color coded bands indicate
the torque levels, and prescription details.
The advantage of this system is the flexibility to
use any or all of these products or concepts in your
practice according to your personal treatment
protocol.

Achieve Maximum VPO Efficiency Use 3M™ Self-Ligating Appliances with APC™ Adhesive
VPO Continuing EducationThe VPO System from 3M is based on
the experience of Dr. Anoop Sondhi
(Indianapolis, IN) who has demonstrated a
unique insight into the elements required
to integrate efficiency and effectiveness
into an orthodontic practice, and to consistently deliver
excellent orthodontic treatment. This translates into a
treatment system that incorporates critical elements of
office management and organization into an efficient and
effective treatment protocol.
Dr. Sondhi has developed educational resources
designed to help you and your staff members learn
about the VPO System, as well as new patient-centered
consultation techniques, organized clinical examinations
and treatment plan presentations, indirect bonding
techniques, and office management systems.
Seminars are conducted in Dr. Sondhi’s Indianapolis
office, where custom-designed, well-spaced units
allow plenty of room for you and your staff members
to observe and participate in procedures. Lectures are
supplemented with copies of his office forms,
staff training scripts, and videos.

Although the Variable Prescription
Orthodontics methodology can be used with
traditional appliance systems, its efficiencies
are best realized when coupled with
3M™ Self-Ligating Appliances and the
APC™ Adhesive Coated Appliance System.
Consider the advantages of the components:
