Some startling facts ~

OBESITY :

Globally, in 2010 there were estimated 42 million obese

children <5yrs of age. In India, roughly 15-20% and 30% are

at risk of falling in this category. They are likely to grow

up as obese adults with several complications like Type 2

Diabetes, High BP, Cardiovascular Diseases, Stroke, Sleep

apnoea, etc.

Therefore, primordial prevention of obesity in children is

absolutely necessary by screening them & monitoring their

diet, counselling, lifestyle modifications, exercise, etc.

Page 12: Mecura Revised BluePrint

TYPE 1 DIABETES MELLITUS :

India is estimated to be home to about 97,700 children

with Type 1 Diabetes. 40,000 Type 2 Diabetes <15yrs of

age and is growing by 5% each year. India is projected to

be the Diabetic Capital of the World by 2050.

90% of all childhood diabetes is of Type 1 and in majority

cases remains undetected & hence not diagnosed on time.

Therefore, screening for diabetes is equally important if

we want the younger generation to live long!!!

Page 13: Mecura Revised BluePrint

DYSLIPIDAEMIA :

Indian Childhood Hypercholesterolemia is another common

thing. Dyslipidaemia (especially <HDL and >LDL are risk

factors for future Cardiovascular Diseases like

Atherosclerosis (most common).

Thus, Dyslipidaemia should also be screened for and

corrected!

ANAEMIA :

It is quite astonishing that 74% Children <5yrs of age are

anaemic! Commonest anemia in children is Iron Def.

Anemia. Needless to mention Anemia is a must for

childhood routine screening.

Page 14: Mecura Revised BluePrint

MALNUTRITION :

In India 56 per 1000 children die before their 5th Birthday

due to undernutrition. 48% children <5yrs of age are

stunted. Infact undernutrition is the leading cause of

death <5yrs.

DEFICIENCY :

And lastly all the vitamins & minerals have their own

complications & effects in case of deficiency. Thereby

testing for deficiencies in suspected cases is also

important.

Page 15: Mecura Revised BluePrint

Thus, MECURA is not only necessary right now but it is

inevitable!

Schools today offer education, moral values, physical

training, games etc. It is high time they offer

healthcare on the table too. As, good health plays a big

role in the upbringing of children & shaping of their

future.

As they say “HEALTHY BODY = HEALTHY MIND”, MECURA

wishes to reach this goal in the next few years, the only

long term aim being a digitized healthcare system in

schools with maximum healthy students.
