Dear Clients & Friends Happy New Year! Welcome to our 86th catalogue. We have done our catalogue on CD once again. When you put the CD into your computer you will see both a black and white and colour catalogue available as pdf files. You will require a computer with a pdf reader installed (most will already have this) such as “Adobe” (http://get.adobe.com/reader/) that can be downloaded from the web for free. If you have any problems with viewing the catalogue let us know so we can make other arrangements for you to access the catalogue. The catalogue is also available on our wholesale website at www.bmn.co.nz We are continually introducing new varieties that are always very popular and sell out quickly. We have more new lines available this year, so order early so as to not miss out. We are always adding to our range from New Zealand and overseas. Some of the interesting lines from this year’s catalogue come from a wide range of plants including perennials, shrubs and trees. This shows the wide range of plants that we enjoy growing for you and your customers. We have grown Acer Rubrums for many years now after importing and distributing Acer rubrum Brandywine, Acer x freemanii Armstrong and Acer x freemanii Jeffers Red. All these forms have become mainstays of subdivisions and landscapes all over New Zealand. We have started producing a mid-size grade in 9 litre pots that suits the home gardener and will fit in their car to get them home. These acers cover themselves in red to burgundy red autumn colours that are unmatched by any other tree. Another tree that excites me this year is the dove tree Davidia involucrate vilmoriniana that we are growing from cuttings so they flower from a young tree. Their white dove or handkerchief flowers make a great display in late spring. In the perennial range we have the dwarf Aquilegia Pumila range and we have added the pink form Rosea to the already popular Alba and Blue forms. We also have a dwarf form of Aruncus that makes a great display along pathways and borders. It is a plant similar to Astilbe but smaller with more bushy fine foliage.

We have introduced a range of Evergreen Azaleas to complement our Deciduous Azaleas. The evergreen Azaleas that we have grown are a hardy selection suited to southern gardens. We have a limited number of Daphne odora Leucanthoe and Alba. If you want any be in quickly. This year the full range of Eucryphia are available again. These are great for attracting the bees into the garden with their white and pink scented flowers on a small evergreen tree. Eucryphia Nymansay is my personal favourite with large lush green leaves and masses of large white flowers in January/February. Lewisia Little Mango bred in Balclutha by Steve Newall is a little stunner with masses of mango coloured flowers in spring and early summer and again in the autumn. It is great for a dry well drained garden. Our primula selection is always increasing and this year we add Primula capiotate Salvana with tubular lavender-blue flowers and attractive powdered silver new foliage. We have our ever popular Scabiosa caucasica Blue Mountain bred by my grandfather Stanley Hughes in the 1950’s. It was grown for cut flower and garden sales and has stood the test of time. We are very proud to have limited numbers available again of both Blue Mountain and the white Mount Cook. Last year we released a fantastic new Bergenia called Wanaka Wine that forms a strong rounded clump with deep burgundy wine-coloured leaves during late summer and over winter. The flowers are deep fluorescent pink and glow in the evening light during late winter and spring. The Meconopsis are stunning with glowing blue flowers and as the name suggests, the Himalayan blue poppy hails from Himalaya. Again Leucothoe f. Crimson Globe have sold well and are putting on fantastic deep burgundy colour as the summer heat continues. The rounded form makes a good container plant for a shaded area. Malus Flamingo has proven to be a very good feature tree with its deep red leaves and upright habit making it suitable for the smaller gardens and sections in the modern subdivisions. The double deep pink flowers are a real show stopper in early spring. Our 2018 crops of Rhododendrons are looking great having already made one flush of growth

Page 3: Meconopsis Lingholm Shrub, Perennials & Rhododendron ... · Rhodo Blue Peter 1.5 Rhodo Winnie HayesOct Rhodo Most Admired 1.5 Oct Name Size(m) Flowering Month Rhodo Bud Flanagan 2

and some starting on their second flush, making a bushy well rounded plant. Most varieties are forming flower buds beautifully and will be ready for lifting and potting from March - April. We anticipate having some plants available from mid April with others coming on stream in May. We have included a selection guide for the Rhododendrons showing their colour, height and flowering times. We are also very happy to put together a range that will suit your area and growing conditions -all you need to do is give us an idea of numbers. Again, some varieties listed are in short supply so I encourage you to order and take receipt of your order early as all orders will be supplied on a first in basis. All our prices are freight free on orders over $500.00 (excluding GST) paid by the 20th of the month following deliver. This works well for our customers as they know exactly how much their plants will cost. Also to help our well organized, loyal indent customers, we are offering a 5% discount on orders dispatched during the months of April, May, June, and July for consignments over $500.00 and paid by the 20th of the month following delivery. In the past this has encouraged customers to have stock earlier and many have sold these plants and needed more stock. It also spreads our dispatch load making the spring dispatch more manageable. We grow an exciting and wide range of plants but we don't grow all of these in wholesale numbers. We encourage you to draw on our stocks of these lines to fill your retail orders and to take advantage of our special discount during the months of April, May, June and July. If you have any questions, would like to know about availability or require information about a particular variety please feel free to contact us.

Have a look at our website at www.bmn.co.nz . The password to get wholesale pricing is tree14 - simply click on login at the top right hand side of the home page and then click on "are you a Wholesaler" and enter the password. Our Indent list is also available on the website. Kind regards from the Blue Mountain Team Denis, Chris and Rebecca Hughes

HOSTAA tough hardy group of popular herbaceous perennials. All grow well in good moist well drained soils with light shade. Most have relatively small juvenile leaves when first planted but after several years develop handsome bold foliage through summer with spikes of attractive summer flowers. They form great ground covers for shaded borders (south side of buildings) or under trees, making for an easy care garden. There is a huge range of size and colour foliage no wonder in recent years there has been a great upsurge in their use and many new forms have been introduced.

HYDRANGEAA rewarding group of shrubs at their best when most others have finished for the year. The very popular H.macrophylla (H. hortensia) has very attractive heads of flowers from mid summer to autumn. They are divided into two groups - those with mop heads (round ball heads of flowers), and lacecaps (a flat head of flowers with the spectacular large flowers as a ring around the edge of the head) The flower colour may be: creamy white, pink - red, or pale blue - deep violet blue. It is most unusual in that pink or blue flowers are controlled by the availability of aluminium in the soil. Acid soils and aluminium sulphate gives blue flowers. Sweet, alkaline soils and no aluminium gives pink - red flowers. Flower size may also be dramatically improved by a good, well drained moist fertile soil, giving the best results. Pruning should be done each year in the spring and restricted to removing dead and weak wood right out at the base of the plant. Also some thinning maybe necessary to allow room for new water shoots to come through from the base each year. Do not trim the top back, as the flowerbuds were formed the previous summer/autumn. H.macrophylla should be protected form the worst of the winter frosts, this is why the deadheads should be retained until spring. I find the H.arborescens and H.paniculata forms much tougher to winter cold. They may be pruned in late winter or very early spring, as flower buds do not form until this time.

PierisThis close relative of the Rhododendron requires the same conditions, and is used in the landscape in the same way. However the panicals of mainly white flowers are very distinct, and very ornamental as is the foliage, especially when in full new growth in the late spring. As with rhodos it is important to deadhead after flowering. I leave this until early November when all fear of frost is over. This delays the vulnerable new growth. To control weeds near the plants, mulch with pea straw/peat and bark mix/pine duff. This feeds the plant and keeps the roots cool and moist.

RhododendronRhododendrons are indispensable for spring colour in any garden. There is a huge range of colours, sizes and shapes to choose from. They all prefer an acid free draining organic moist soil. In a position sheltered from the worst wind and hottest sun. I find they do best in a mixed boarder with a few trees dotted through e.g.. Maples magnolias, apples or dogwoods which contrast nicely.
