Recent activities of the ASA Mechanical Division Operations Committee …
• The Mechanical Operations Committee had severalprojects on its plate this year, and is excited to be making some headway on them. We have shop licensing/registration initiatives working in a couple of states. Weare excited to see these efforts progress, as we feel theywill help level the playing field to the benefit of profes-sional shop owners and technicians.
• The committee was happy to provide assistance in getting the Scan Tool Resource Center vetted and readyfor members. Donny Seyfer, ASA chairman-elect, led theproject, and with the expertise of the Autoshop Solutionsteam, it’s now a reality. The culmination of everyone’s efforts will be available later this month. For the initiallaunch, basic tool information will be available on theNASTF website, www.nastf.org. Later, upon further development, ASA members will be able to use a memberlogin to the ASA website to access a special “membersonly” version of the Scan Tool Resource Center. This areawill offer a blog component that allows members to shareinformation with one another about specific tools andalso rate the features of each tool.
• Parts quality is still a powerful issue for members. ASAis pursuing collaborative efforts with various organiza-tions to strengthen communication between the repairerand the part manufacturer and distributor.
• We are excited to see more doors open to the revital-ized ASA. Dan Risley, ASA executive director, has been relentless in pursuing and building relationships with ourindustry partners. Bob Redding, our Washington, D.C.,representative, has also worked extensively with theOEMs in pursuit of better communication and under-standing, in addition to maintaining and strengthening our relationships with associations we interact with frequently.
• Voting for the national board candidates will take place next month. As we focus on the 2014 elections, it’s not too soon to begin thinking about the next electionsin 2015. All ASA shop members are invited to get involved as volunteer leaders of the association. BillMoss, Mechanical Division director, says, “In the nearly10 years that I have been associated with the MechanicalOperations Committee, I have been blessed to be allowedto work with, and learn from, a cast of selfless profes-sionals. From ASA staff to volunteers, they tend to deliver
more than asked, always looking for the benefit for themember. I encourage you all to volunteer in any way youcan. The association and the industry can benefit greatlyfrom your knowledge and energy, even when you don’tthink you have either!”
