From the HOD’s Desk …………

During the first semester of academic year 2012-13, various extracurricular activities were conducted successfully by Mechanical Engineering department like paper publication &paper presentation by faculty members and students in national / international journals. Various current global environmental issues like global warming, load shading etc. were well noted & tried to create awareness in student’s mind by conducting & establishing Renewable Energy Club, Environmental Club, Water Harvesting Plant through student-staff joint effort at college level. Various activities & projects like PUC Camp, Wind Mill Project and Energy Audit of MESCOE Buildings are in line with this objective and participation by students was the most encouraging feature of last year. Participation of Mechanical Engineering students in various technical events like RC Car Competition 2012 Organized at VJTI, Mumbai, Virtual Baja- 2012 organized by SAE India, RoboCon-2012 organized by MITPune, TechFest-2012 organized by IIT, Bombay was encouraging and team work of students and staff members was encouraging factor, which we want to continue in coming years also. Also various projects by final year students are as per present requirements of industries.

3.4 Celebration of Teacher’s day:

On account of 5th September Teacher’s Day, a program was organized byMechanical Engineering students Association [MESA] co-ordinators, on behalf of all the students formMechanical Branch. All staff teaching as well as non-teaching was invited dearly to the program.Invitation cards were given to all. The event started with ‘deep-prajwalan’ and by honouring Dr.Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. The deep-prajwalan was done by our respected H.O.D and other staff members. After the auspicious start, it was time to felicitate every staff in a very unique way. Every faculty achievements in his life as well as in academic and co-curricular activities were told and they were honored with ‘shreefal’ and a rose. An entertainment section especially for our faculty members was organized. The famous game of ‘damsharaj’ was taken at a new height with our esteemed faculty participating actively and lively for the game. Prizes were distributed to both the members who could guess the answer correctly as well as to them who enacted the movie correctly. This round was full of excitement with the students cheering and supporting their teachers to the utmost. Finally, after 2 hours of entertainment, it was time to end the event. Before leaving the event, we thanked our faculties and provided little snacks for them.

3.5. Celebration of Engineers Day:

Mechanical Engineering students Association [MESA] celebrated engineer’s day on 15th September 2012 with the objective to focus on the role of engineers in technical and scientific community. On this day two events organized for Mechanical students. Events Organized:1. Auto-quiz 2. Ingenuous Solutions Auto-quiz: This quiz was divided in 3 levels. Level 1: In this level, participants were shown slides of different cars and automobilemanufacturers and asked to guess them.A total of 36 slides were shown. The participants did very well and scored as high as 33 correct out of 36. Level 2: Out of the 18 participating teams, top 10 teams were selected for next round. These were later divided into 5 groups, each group consisting of 2 teams which were chosen as per the draw. Further every team was given a puzzle consisting of 3×3 grids just like tic-tac-toe. This round was named as TIC-TAC-TECH.

Level 3: Top 5 teams were selected and were given entry in final round. The final round consisted of rapid fire questions, with each team asked 5 questions.

Ingenuous Solutions: In this event, participating teams were given a problem statement in which they were asked to make a throwing mechanism which could throw the given marble at the farthest distance.

4. Social/NSS Activity: Name of the Activity: REDR India Training Course on Environmental Health In Emergencies Date: 6th -12th August 2012 , Place: BAIF Campus Warje Attended By: Mr. Sushant Dahale &Mr. Akshay Kulkarni [both T.E. Mechanical students] A Workshop on Humanitarian Health in Emergencies was conducted by REDR(Registered Engineers for Disaster Relief) from 6thto 12th August 2012.REDR is a Non-Government Organization which is a campaign for disaster management. It was a seven day workshop which mainly emphasized on WASH i.e. Water Sanitation and Hygiene in case of emergencies.A brief idea was given on how to tackle problems post disaster pertaining to water sanitation and hygiene. There was an active response of people from most parts of the world.Lectures and practical sessions were conducted efficiently by the members of REDR, India.According to the statistics 80% of the diseases in disaster prone areas is caused due wrong water handling practices.A brief idea was given on how to efficiently

Vol. 3 No.- 1 Mechanical Dept. Newsletter [2012-13] Page 10

manage water for further use and how to prevent it from getting contaminated.Shelter and sanitation are the other parameters to be considered for post disaster to prevent further loss of lives.Presentations were given on how to come up with quick ideas post disaster pertaining to the type of disaster.Depending upon the scenario, the types of shelter and sanitations to be built for temporary adjustment settlement of the people.Practical sessions mainly emphasized on how to build up temporary storage tanks and toilets so that they can be used by the affected people.Overall, it was a wonder full experience as we were exposed to a completely new field of work and we request more college students to take part in such social activities.
