The Mechanical Engineering National Diploma Course combines engineering physics and mathematics principles with materials science to ensure you have an all-around understanding of the field. You will learn to design, analyze, manufacture and maintain mechanical systems.
This course is available through:
Coastal KZN TVET College (N1 - N6)Tshwane South TVET College (N4)Tshwane North TVET College (N4 - N6)
ABOUT THIS COURSE:
MathematicsMathematics or 'math' is the study of numbers:
quantity, structure, space and change. Often
referred to as the quest for absolutes, definitive
solutions and answers; all sciences require
basic knowledge of the rules of mathematics.
Engineering ScienceEngineering Science is an introductory course
that teaches the basics of the scientific and
mathematical aspects of Engineering.
Engineering scientists are responsible for
creating and researching materials, devices,
sensors and the applications of these
innovations into practical technological
solutions.
This National Diploma course is separated into two major sections: N1 - N3 and N4 - N6.
MECHANICAL ENGINEERING N1 - N3You will do the following mandatory subjects as an introduction to the National Diploma. N1 is the first step to becoming a qualified technician in your field.
COURSE BREAKDOWN:COURSE BREAKDOWN:
Fitting and Machinery TheoryFocuses on the manufacturing and machining of
machine parts using processes such as lathe turning,
milling, cutting, shaping, fitting of keys, couplings,
bushes, shafts and bearings.
Motor/Diesel Trade TheoryThis subject builds onto the basic knowledge obtained
in Motor Trade Theory. This subject covers various
automotive systems and components. Students
acquire knowledge to explain various repairs and
maintenance on an automotive mobile engine and
components. Motor Trade Theory transfers
trade-specific knowledge, values and attitudes so that
students can explain how the theory is applied in the
trade.
Mechanotechnology
To give students insight into the installation,
maintenance and use of equipment in Mechanical
Engineering.
Engineering Drawing
Engineering drawings use standardised language
and symbols so that engineers understand the
drawings implicitly, with no room for interpretation.
Accuracy is the most vital aspect of the technical
engineering drawing process.
Once you have completed your National Certificate (N3) - Your N4 - N6 course will earn you a National Diploma.

innovations into practical technological
solutions.
Mechanical Drafting Students are introduced to the principles of
design, screw threads, springs, gears, keys and
keyways, cams, and assembly.
Mechanotechnics Mechanotechnics will familiarize students with
practice and calculations that may occur in their
work situations. This subject will give students
insight into the installation, maintenance and use of
equipment in Mechanical Engineering. It will provide
the prospective craftsman with the necessary
theoretical knowledge.
Power MachinesPower Machinery is the study of turbines,
generators and other machines that are integral in
the engineering and transport sector. This module
touches on wind power, steam power and more.
Strength of Materials & StructureThis subject familiarises students with the
fundamental principles and concepts of which
materials to use for which structures, composite
materials, thick shells, flat plates and the vibrations
of complex structures.
Each certificate from N1 - N6 consists of 4 subjects which you will need to complete before being able to progress.
A student may choose to do more subjects @ R 1 351,00 per subject.
