WEEK 1 PLAYERS OF THE WEEK• Concord’s Brian Novak, a sophomore quarterback from College Park, Md., was named MEC Offensive Player of the Week after leading the Mountain Lions to a lopsided 54-27 win over Glenville State. Novak was 20-for-32 for a career-high 304 yards while lead-ing CU to its highest offensive output since 2010 and has now directed CU to over 30 points in each of his last four starts dating back to last season.• Notre Dame College’s Marlon Oden, a senior defen-sive back from Akron, Ohio, earned MEC Defensive Player of the Week honors after picking off a pair of passes in a Notre Dame win over Fairmont State. Both of his interceptions came in the third quarter, and he returned the second one 22 yards for a touch-down.• West Liberty’s Anton McCallum, a sophomore from Alexandria, Va., earned conference Special Teams Player of the Week honors after taking a kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter. He finished with over 100 all-purpose yards in the game.

NEWS & NOTES• Five of 11 teams in the MEC scored over 30 points in the first week. • Concord’s 54 points were the its most in a game since 2010.• CU’s Angus Harper’s four rushing touchdowns vs. Glenville State established a new league mark.• No receiver in the country in any division of the NCAA had more yards than Fabian Guerra. Guerra had 247 against Notre Dame, and in the process broke a 30-year old school record. • FSU quarterback Cooper Hibbs’ 415 passing yards were the fourth-highest in school history. Hibbs be-came just the second player in league history to throw for over 400 yards in a game.• West Virginia State snapped a 17-game losing streak going back to the 2012 season in a 19-14 win at home over Lock Haven out of the PSAC.• WVSU’s Tevin Brown’s 12.9 yards per play were the most in the league in week one.• Shepherd has held its opponents to under 100 yards

rushing in 10 of its last 11 regular season games dat-ing back to last season.• Sophomore Jabre Lolley has scored 17 rushing touchdowns in 13 games the Rams.• Urbana linebacker D’Gary Wallace picked up where he left off from last season recording two tackles for a loss in week one against UVa-Wise. Wallace had 20 last year to lead the MEC in that category.• Glenville State out-gained Concord on the ground in week one with 262 yards rushing. Rahman Lee led all players in the MEC with 155 yards and three touchdowns, and teammate Tevin Drake added 102 yards and a score. • Charleston’s John Knox and Joey Augustin hooked up for a 76-yard touchdown against West Virginia Wesleyan, the longest pass play in the league in week one.• WVWC quarterback Jeremy Musselman played just one half against Charleston before leaving the game with an injury. • Bobcat running back Michael Anderson’s 140 yards put him second in the league in that category.• Notre Dame quarterback Ray Russ 330-yard pass-ing performance against Fairmont State marked the fifth time in two seasons he’s gone over the 300-yard barrier.• Marlon Oden’s interception return for a touchdown was the only defensive score in the MEC in the first week.

POLL POSITIONS• Shepherd moved up one spot to 11th in both the AFCA poll and the D2Football.com poll. • Concord and Charleston each received votes in the AFCA poll.• It marked the first time that three MEC teams have been listed in the AFCA poll.

WELCOME BACK• Seventeen players who earned first team All-Moun-tain East Conference honors last season are back for 2014.• Shepherd has six players that earned first team All-MEC honors returning, including the league’s De-fensive Freshman of the Year in linebacker Octavius Thomas and All-America return man C.J. Davis.• The league’s leader in rushing (Rahmann Lee, GSC), scorer (Jabre Lolley, SU), tackles (Hayden Davis, NDC) and tackles for a loss (D’Gary Wallace, UU) return to the field this year. • Glenville State’s Rahmann Lee is sixth in the coun-try in rushing yards among active players heading into the 2014 season.

PRESEASON HONORS• Shepherd’s C.J. Davis earned preseason All-America honors from D2Football.com and Beyond-SportsNetwork.com. He was a first team returner on the BSN team, and a third team honoree by D2Foot-ball.com.• Four other players were named to the Beyond-SportsNetwork.com preseason All-America teams: Concord safety Davon Marion (2nd team), Shep-herd’s Jonathan Hammer (3rd team) and Isaiah Shelton (3rd team) and Urbana linebacker D’Gary Wallace (3rd team).

POLL POSITION PART II• The Shepherd Rams have been picked to repeat as Mountain East Conference football champions after a vote conducted by the league’s coaches. Shepherd collected 95 points in the poll and was picked to finish first on seven ballots.• Concord was picked second with 91 points and collected three first-place votes. Charleston was cho-sen third with 84 points and received the remaining first-place vote. Glenville State placed fourth (67), fol-lowed by West Virginia Wesleyan (60) and Urbana (58). Notre Dame and West Liberty were predicted to finish in a tie for seventh with 44 points, and Fairmont State (33), UVa-Wise (15) and West Virginia State (14) rounded out the poll.
