There was once a very brave knight that was trying to rescue the princess from the evil dragon. He had encountered many puzzles in his attempt to rescue her. He was almost there, but then he found that there were two puzzles remaining. If he solved the first puzzle, the door to the castle could be opened. The solution to this puzzle was to place three objects – a metal disk, a plastic chip, and a wooden square in order from heaviest to lightest. All he had to do this were some paper clips, a balance and two cups.

After the knight found out that the paper clips were not the same size and it would be difficult to use the paper clips to determine and compare the mass of objects, he went to a store where grain was sold to find out how the storekeeper could determine and compare the mass of objects. The storekeeper said that he used weights called grams that he put on one side of a balance and placed an object on the other side of the balance to compare and determine the mass of objects. He gave the knight a bag of gram weights to help him solve his puzzle. When the knight returned to the castle he found that the puzzle had changed. Now he needed to find the weight of a metal disk, a plastic chip, a wooden square and an apple in grams.

The knight was finally inside the castle, but he still needed to solve one more puzzle to slay the dragon and rescue the princess. This puzzle was written on a piece of paper. Next to the piece of paper was a dry sponge and a bucket of water. The knight read the paper. He is what was written: “In order to slay the dragon and rescue the princess, you must solve one more puzzle. This puzzle will require you to use the sponge and the water in the bucket. Sponges are used to soak up water. You will need to find out how much water the sponge can soak up compared to how much the sponge weighs itself. You will need to compare the mass of the sponge to the mass of the water it soaks up. Solve this puzzle and you will slay the dragon and rescue the princess.”
