I never take it offTransitional jewellery - reassurance and protection against separation

Karen wears an oval gold pendant on a fine gold chain that she wears around her neck. She says that the laser engraved por-

trait on the gold oval is of her deceased father. The image is a three quarter profile of a man, showing his head and shoulders. He is not that old.

In 1755, Mrs Cibber wears a miniature portrait, an oval pendant bearing the likeness of a man. It hangs from a ribbon bow

pinned to her dress, the representation executed in enamel on ivory set in a gold frame. Both Karen's and Mrs Cibber's

pendants are transitional objects; ambulant, they offer continuity, comfort and reassurance and guard the wearer from

    absence and loss.

When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child

My first transitional object was a teddy bear; I had two identical bears, one pink, the other gold. I favoured the pink bear over

the gold one. I took it everywhere with me. It was part of my role-playing games and make believes, as I was experiencing and

mapping my new world. Preparing me for separation.

But when I became an adult, I put away childish things.

Perhaps not all childish things were put away. I still occupy myself with objects, through association and transference, collect-

ing jewellery and stories that shape our worlds. I still prepare myself for loss and separation; I imagine that others do too.

Gifts of jewellery affirm who we are, our father's daughter, a loving wife, a protective brother. We never take them off for fear

of a compounded bereavement, the material absence of the object set with the loss of symbolic connection and memory. The

gifting of jewellery asks of a commitment from the receiver to the giver. This object is to connect you to me and me to you, look after it carefully, with your life, as you value my life. It is part of an exchange within a social and economic system. A gift

of jewellery is never for free.

For six years Zuzi has worn a silver bracelet given to her by a boyfriend, her first love. They are no longer together, but its

emotional value has always been more than its material worth. She has invested highly in this gift, perhaps to the extent that

she will forsake all other suitors and their favors, for the fear that she would be obliged to remove the bracelet, to make way

for another. At this moment in time the bracelet is her world.

    She never takes it off.

It's a silver baby cross, my sister bought me it when she was 11 at her first Holy Communion, from the churchthat we used to go to when we were children; so I never really take it off.

A single diamond is the ultimate in class and elegance, its something that I've always wanted, so I boughtmyself one. I used to have a necklace with a cubic zirconia but I always said that one day it will be a real one.

I'm quite glad you asked me this. Its a silver ring with a few lines engraved into it. My dad actually made thisfor my mum when they were going out with each other, they're still together now, and he made two of them andme and my boyfriend wear them on our wedding finger, because we're not quite engaged yet but it's just a nicething to do.

Both pieces of jewellery were given to me by my partner for an anniversary present, I also bought her anecklace which was similar to mine. I feel that my bracelet and chain are part of me, they only come offwhen I teach surfing or swim. Without them I feel strange, they come everywhere with me.

Every year at Christmas I always bought my own Christmas present from my husband, so I knew what Iwanted. But fifty year ago, near enough, he used to buy me a present that he'd chosen which was a surpriseon Christmas morning and this was one of them. I've worn it for fifty years.
