New Amenity Update You may have wondered what has gone on with the new amenity since it was announced back in April. At the time of print, the sewer lines have gone in and they are currently grading the area.

Waste Management Waste Management is working to lower contamination in recycling loads. We have recently introduced Recycle Often. Recycle RightSM – an educational campaign focused on bringing consumers back to the basics of recycling. Byincreasing the amount of paper, cans, and bottles that go into the recycling cart and decreasing contamination, we can make a huge difference. That’s where you come in. Please visit RecycleOftenRecycleRight.com. By doing so, you can help yourcommunity by improving recycling habits through better education on what can and cannot be recycled. You’ll have direct access to videos, children’s activities and other free resources. The website is RecycleOftenRecycleRight.com.

Sometimes it is the little things that make the biggest difference. Emily Walker, a Meadows resident and senior at Castle View High School, has partnered with The Meadows Neighborhood Company and with local Police, Fire and Rescue agencies to help make a difference to those who are involved in traumatic situations.

Emily is working on a project called “Community Comfort”, in which police and emergency responders, when traveling to trag-ic situations, will have teddy bears and blankets in their vehicles ready to aid in consoling individuals in their time of distress.

Emily’s project is part of her work as a Girl Scout for Troop 360. Working on the highest award attainable as a Girl Scout, The Gold Award, she had to focus on a project that would solve a root issue in her community and be sustainable while hav-ing both a national and global connection. Emily previously worked on a project in which she and her Troop made blankets and toys for the animals at The Buddy Center in Castle Rock.

Community Comfort

To make this project possible, Em-ily needs the community’s help. She is collecting donations of gently used lap blankets (fleece and cotton), new teddy bears (approximately 10.5 inches tall), and fleece fabric in order to make no-sew blankets (2 yds. for child blankets, 3 yds. for adult blankets). Collection boxes will be placed at stores located around the community and at The Grange until December 12. Another element of this project is getting the community in-volved in making the no sew blankets and prepare all the items for distribution to the agencies who will be handing them out. Emily is hosting several “Community Days” to get the project going. Those interested in helping or needing community ser-vice hours for high school graduation, can come to one of the following:

Nov 20 The Grange 5:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m.Dec 6 Philip S. Miller Library Dec 19 Philip S. Miller Library (check Community Comforts Facebook page for times).

Anyone interested in helping can just show up to any of the above dates or contact Emily.

For more ways information about Community Comfort, visit Emily’s Blog and Facebook page athttp://communitycomfort.blogspot.com/https://www.facebook.com/community.comfort

Participants will take a 12x12 cradled birch board canvas, prime it, and then paint on the background color. Once it dries we’ll do some “smudging” to get the look of chalk on the background. We’ll then sand the edges to distress it and use a stencil to add our word-ing to the sign. It may sound complicated but it’s super easy to create this beautiful work of art for your home. All supplies are included. You can choose your stencil design from one of sev-eral patterns. The pictures below are examples of what you could make.

This great event is for all the readers in the community! Just how does the Book Exchange work? Residents are encouraged to bring their used books and DVD’s to The Grange in boxes that you do not want back. These items can be dropped off at The Grange during the following dates/times.

The Children’s Hospital Colorado is bringing their mobile blood drive to The Grange and we need to know, can we count you in? 32 slots will need to be filled for this donation between the hours of 9 am-12:45 pm. Our goal is to fill up 2 vacancies every 15 minutes that the drive is going on. Every year at Children’s Hospital Colorado, 8,000 units of blood products are transfused into sick and injured infants, children and teens. Without this blood, many of the lifesaving procedures performed at Children’s Hospital Colorado would not be possible. Blood donation does not cost money and requires little time. It does, however, make a big difference.

If you are interested in participating please visit www.MeadowsLink.com and click on the Events and Programs tab at the top of the page and then click on the Blood Drive drop down tab. Then read the eligibility requirements and if you qualify you can sign up on the website.

I hope you enjoyed this year as much as I did. This is the eighth year that our club has been together and we had over 50 members hiking with us this year. We hiked more than 25 different trails this past season offering a wide variety of hikes.

We are always happy to see new members join each year. If you are looking for an opportunity to get out and see all the beauty Colorado can offer consider joining our club. We usually begin our hiking schedule in April but we hope to plan some snow shoe outings after the first of the year. We will announce our winter/spring meetings in the next issue of the Meadows Newsletter.

If you have questions, you may email me at [email protected] Hiking!

SNOW & ICE FAQs

Q: What do I need to know about snow routes?A: Priority criteria for snow route Priority 1 Streets classified as arterials, major collectors, commercial/

industrial and commercial business areas. These typically are high-volume streets that connect major sections of Town and provide access for emergency fire, police and medical services.

Priority 2 Streets classified as minor collectors and school bus routes or

roads providing access to schools. Priority 3 Low-volume and residential streets. Priority 4 Cul-de-sacs and alleyways.

Q: I live on a cul-de-sac and there is a pile of snow in the middle, are you ever going to remove it?

A: The Town is prioritizing and investing resources in achieving public safety goals only at this time. Removing plowed and piled snow is not a priority.

Q: Plowed snow landed on my driveway and sidewalks. Why do you do that, and when are you going to clear it?

A: When we plow streets, some snow will end up on your driveway and, possibly, your sidewalks. We know this can be frustrating, but it sometimes is an unfortunate and unavoidable result of snowplowing. To avoid this, shovel the snow from your driveway and sidewalks into your yard, because any snow you place in the street may wind up being plowed back onto your driveway or sidewalk.

Q: When are you going to come around and clear the drains once the snow starts to melt?

A: The service-level standard for storm drains is to investigate ponding water, determine if it’s a safety hazard and, if so, address the hazard.

Q: When are the plows coming back into my neighborhood to remove the snow that was previously wed and plowed and stacked?

A: The Town is prioritizing and investing resources in achieving public safety goals only at this time. Removing plowed and stacked snow is not a priority.

Q: My street is really rutted due to melt. When will the Town clear the ice?

A: The Town’s service-level standard for ice, ruts or ice holes in neighborhood streets is one through lane that is passable in a two-wheel-drive sedan. Crews will investigate and, if necessary, remove or treat ice, ruts and ice holes deemed a safety hazard. To report a safety hazard, call 303-660-1020.

Q: Where do I call to report a snow or ice safety hazard?A: The Castle Rock Service Center, 303-660-1020.

Q: When are you going to clear the rest of the snow on my street, widening it to two lanes instead of one?

A: The service-level standard for residential streets is one through lane that is passable in a two-wheel-drive sedan. Based on service-level priorities that address public safety only, the Town will not be doing any additional snow plowing on residential streets beyond clearing one passable lane.

Fertilizing in the winterLate fall or early winter are the best times to fertilize cool season grasses. Before the first freeze, give your lawn a thorough fertilizing to replace all of the nutrients that can be lost from the soil during the hot summer months. Once the weather turns cold, the fertilizer will remain in the soil and feed your lawn’s roots all winter long.

avoid exCessive lawn traFFiCWhen the grass is brown and short it can be easy for people to forget that it shouldn’t be walked on. Try to prevent very much foot traffic on your winter lawn. Grass is relatively resilient, but it will have a difficult time recovering if a path becomes well-worn across the lawn.

• Keepyoursidewalksclearedoficeandsnowsothatyouandyourguests won’t be tempted to cut across the yard very often.

PrePare in the FallThere really is not much lawn care that needs to be done during the cold months of winter. If you properly prepare the lawn during the fall, it will be fine until the warm days of spring arrive once more.

• Make sureyouaerate, fertilize, andmow the lawnbefore the firstfreeze of the season.

• Rakeawayanydeadleavesthatmayhavefallenandcollectedonyouryard to avoid wet spots that can become mossy or moldy.

• Keep the lawn cleared of debris and help everyone in the familyrespect the yard while it is dormant.

Once you have taken care of everything that needs to be done during the fall you will be ready to enjoy a nice cozy winter indoors with your family before lawn care season begins again in the spring.
