"Prophet and/or Patriot?"
As prophets go, Jonah occupied a very unique place. 2 Kings 14 records that he prophesied to the northern kingdom of Israel during the reign of King Jereboam II. Israel had been involved in spiritual apostasy through their calf worship for almost two centuries at that time. Hosea, with other contemporaries of Jonah like the prophet Amos, spoke stern warnings to Israel of immanent judgment. However, Jonah declared that God was going to restore to Israel it's northern border at Lebo Hamath and it's southern border at the Dead Sea (2 Kings 14:25). The book of Jonah records God's command to the prophet to go and preach to the Assyrian capital city of Nineveh. At first Jonah tried to run away from his commission, but he finally went after he was brought to repentance inside a fish. Jonah may have been a sour prophet but he was successful. The whole city of Nineveh repented. Jonah became very angry at God when he spared the Assyrians. He prayed, "Isn't this what I said, LORD, when I was still at home? That is what I tried to forestall by fleeing to Tarshish. I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity" (Jonah 4:2 NIV). How did Jonah know that God was gracious and relenting? He knew that from God's dealings with Israel. He had been a prophet who proclaimed mercy to Israel when other prophets had proclaimed judgment. Why was Jonah angry at God's having forgiven Nineveh? It is because Assyria was Israel's political enemy. He knew that Assyria's safety meant danger to Israel. He was a great patriot but terrible prophet. Our nation is one that is very divided politically. We all have our strong opinions about what is wrong and what should be done. May we all guard against souring as Jonah did. His love for country made him hateful toward his political enemies.
