The house and garden overlook the ocean and Weir’s Beach, named for the first owner of this property back in the 1800s. The celebrated artist Emily Carr liked to travel here from Victoria to capture the sea views and the wonderful skies on canvases of stunning beauty.

The beach is hard-packed white sand, a rarity in this region.

Witty’s Lagoon

When the tide is low, the glistening sands extend a long way out. Weir’s Beach is popular with walkers, drawing visitors from all over North America and Europe to stay in motor homes along the shore, interesting people who like to chat.

At night the black sky is brilliant with stars. A full moon over the mountains is a wondrous sight, as are the twinkling lights of cruise ships returning from Alaska to visit Victoria on the way to their home port of Seattle.

A flagstone pathway leads under an arch of clematis into an amazing garden. This 7200 ft2

property was once owned by the head gardener at Victoria’s Beacon Hill Park. He designed and planted this as a garden for all seasons, with something always coming into radiant bloom from the scarlet Rhodos in spring all the way through to the fuchsias and azaleas later in the season.

A large palm tree stands over the grounds, an impressive sight. Here you can pick apples from your own trees, or perhaps enjoy some crisp, tangy crab apples. The garden has oaks, Japanese maples and birch (unusual for this region). Lilacs grow very well here, as do magnolias, hydrangeas and some very big arbutus trees.

The area is totally quiet except for the cries of gulls and other seabirds. Eagles soar high above on wide-spread wings. Sea lions can be seen from here—also kayakers and people out in boats, crabbing. It’s a lovely place, very relaxing.

The Grounds

There is an 8’ by 20’ greenhouse and a vegetable garden. On the ocean side of the house, steps lead down to a fire pit (allowed in this municipality only). Close by is a charming gazebo, the perfect place to gaze out over the ocean and the property’s very large pond—teeming with bulrushes—where wildlife abounds. Baby ducks waddle along the grassy shoreline, seeking to be fed. Growing beside the water are wild roses along with many blackberry bushes.

The Bird Sanctuary

If you are a birder this is your place because the pond forms part of a federally protected bird sanctuary.

Turtles live here, along with swans, red wing blackbirds and beautiful little hummingbirds that hover in midair as they drink from flowers in the garden. Herons can be seen feeding, and the Canada geese are a dramatic sight lifting off into the skies.

Open Concept

This is a cheerful house, filled with natural light. There is a skylight above the entry hall, which incorporates attractive, newly-installed Tuscan-patterned Travertine tiles.

Steps lead up to the south-facing living room where large windows give on to the view of ocean and beach, the pond and the many plants and trees in the garden.

From the living room can be seen green forests of nearby federal land, a picturesque place and one that can never be developed.

The big windows provide a wonderful view and are a great location for studying the sea through binoculars or telescope, watching the passage of sailboats and other craft, looking for orcas and other creatures of the wild, at night studying the crystal-clear constellations that form beautiful patterns of light all across the dark skies.

The Living Room

A great bonus in the living room is the wood burning fireplace (stacked outside the house is a big supply of cedar from local trees). This is a large, open space where guests can comfortably mingle when they come inside from enjoying the view from the open south-facing deck.

The ceiling is made of an attractive local cedar. A large overhead ceiling light and fan fixture circulate the warm air from the fireplace or the cool breezes in the summer.

The Dining Room

The beautiful hardwood floor is shared by the living room and dining room, which adjoin each other.

The Neighbourhood

Close to Victoria is the municipality of Metchosin. A well-kept secret, this West Coast jewel is an agreeable community combining the charms of the countryside with the good fortune of being located beside the sparkling waters of the blue Pacific with the breathtaking beauty of the snow-capped Olympic Mountains in the distance. On the way to Metchosin you pass through Langford where the Westshore Town Centre has 55 stores and services including a multiplex movie theatre and a friendly Tim’s! The journey then takes you into the countryside along Happy Valley Road where huge evergreens tower above.

The region has a popular Farmers’ Market. The village of Metchosin is home to a very popular restaurant, My Chosen Café, a clever play on the municipality’s name (pizza lovers: theirs rates 5 stars!). On William Head Road you catch sight of a pleasant house offering home-made fudge for sale, then the Pebblehill Art Studio and Shady Lane Farm. To the left can be seen Devonian Regional Park. All around, along this road, is the sunny beauty of open fields and good-looking homes.

A favourite way for locals to explore this beautiful region is on horseback. Another is to bike the Galloping Goose Trail. Fifty-five kilometres of beauty along the Pacific shore, “the Goose” links Victoria with Sooke.

The closest elementary school is a five-minute drive from Sandgate Road. An additional seven minutes and you reach the district’s brand new high school.

Regularly scheduled buses operated by B.C. Transit connect to routes that will take you to many places including downtown Victoria, Butchart Gardens, the airport and the ferry terminals.

The Westshore Shopping Centre is a 40-minute bike ride away, while the Juan de Fuca Recreation Centre is a 50-minute ride.

The City

Victoria has many excellent restaurants offering fresh seafood and a variety of other culinary delights. Artists of quality—think Robert Bateman and Robert Amos—live in the area and display their art in local galleries. The theatre scene is vibrant and the clubs are lively. You’ll also enjoy some great hockey, baseball and soccer featuring talented young players determined to make their mark. Outdoor activities from golf to windsurfing abound; not far away enjoy winter sports at Mount Washington or head for the 2010 Olympics venues at Whistler, north of Vancouver. Just across the strait in the USA, Olympic National Park is the perfect place to enjoy the great outdoors in all seasons.

Close by is Seattle, which offers wonderful opera and theatre along with many other cosmopolitan charms, not to mention the excitement of catching the Mariners or Seahawks in action. Or consider travelling aboard a luxury Victoria Clipper catamaran with year-round passenger service, harbour to harbour, between Victoria and Seattle.

With many festivals, both summer and winter, ranging from buskers to the fringe and an annual classic boat show, there is so much more to see and do in this wonderful place. Living here is a joy!
