John George Marsteller, served in the Revolutionary War in the Pennsylvania Militia in the Eighth Company under the command of Capt. Arnold Francis. He was a militiaman, 2nd class. Born and raised in Pennsylvania of German immigrants, he married in 1761 and started a family of 13 children, eventually settling in Washington County.

Descendants of veterans of the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, and Civil War joined with current veterans in honoring our nation’s war dead. Elements of the MDSSAR Color Guard joined Boy Scout Troop 439 in raising the colors at the start of the program. The John Hanson Chapter was also in attendance. A wreath was laid by John Hanson Chapter President Douglas Stuart as well. The Honorable Roger Berliner, President of the Montgomery County Council, presented remarks, U. S. Senator Chris Van Hollen was represented by staff, and Congressional Representative Jamie Raskin sent a letter of support and appreciation. Mr. William Connery, local author and Civil War researcher, delivered the keynote address which focused on the origins of Memorial Day and its meanings today. Compatriot Michael A. All Documentation and No Facts

There was an English restaurant owner, who spent 30 years tracing his lineage back hundreds of years and documented for generations and spent thousands of dollars until he showed his work to his aunt who said you have one error there - your parents - you were adopted! Moral of the story is that the documentation may not be the true facts.

Officer Reports

Greetings Compatriots:

It is indeed my privilege and honor to serve as our State Society’s 2017-2018 President. SAR is dedicated to assisting members, schools, teachers and the public in their efforts to sustain and preserve our history and constitutional principles. On December 23, 1783, in the Maryland State House in Annapolis, George Washington resigned his commission as Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army. On April 20, 1889, in the very same Senate Chamber, the Maryland Society of the Sons of the American Revolution was organized, following in the footsteps of history.

The Deering administration will honor our rich history and support our society’s goals, but will also look to the future. This includes our collective dedication to weighing in on new matters

and addressing long-term projects that span past, present and future administrations. Organizations of any nature, must innovate and continuously evolve if they are to be vibrant and remain long-lasting.

As we move forward, let’s all consider how we, as SAR members, can step outside of our local chapters to make others more aware of who we are as a society by developing and growing meaningful partnerships. I look forward to working with you towards that goal.

In Service, Donald A. Deering, President

1st VP

James Adkins

Time has passed quickly since our outstanding annual meeting in Annapolis in April. To get a jump on scheduling for next year's annual meeting, we have set April 21, 2018 as the date. Please mark your calendars. Any suggestions for a venue and theme would be appreciated. In addition to sharing the Maryland 400 story with other organizations, I had the pleasure of attending General William Smallwood, Colonel Tench Tilghman and Christian Ardinger chapter meetings over the last few months. My upcoming schedule includes the 127th Annual SAR Congress in Knoxville, Tennessee, the Captain John Smoot chapter meeting in Salisbury and the Atlantic Middle States Association of the Sons of the American Revolution in Gettysburg. I look forward to visiting other events and chapter activities as your Society's 1st Vice President. Our state is rich with Revolutionary War history and I look forward to working with all of you to tell the story of our American Patriots.

2nd VP

Tim Mallory

I reflect upon the courage of our Patriots in the year 1777; achieving victories in the Battles of Trenton, Princeton, Bennington, and Stanwix, just to name a few. My New England ancestors were engaged in several of those battles, and I am very grateful for the service of all those brave men and women who were dedicated to achieving American Independence. I encourage you to participate in the NSSAR Patriot Biographies Project and write a few biographies about your ancestors, or any Patriots that others may find of interest. I recently contributed eight Patriot biographies to the NSSAR database. I serve as the MDSSAR Liaison to the following Chapters in the Western Maryland and Capitol region during my term – Sgt. Lawrence Everhart, Gen. William Smallwood, Christian Ardinger, Westminster, and Little Meadows. I plan to participate in a few upcoming 4th of July Parades. In my role as 2nd VP, I coordinate publicity and public relations articles, and submit Chapter photos to the SAR National Magazine. Please send me your Chapter’s highlights of your Patriotic activities, and include names for the captions, and the photographer. I plan to attend the upcoming visit to Old Stone House and Maryland 400 Monument in Brooklyn, NY, in August. In closing, I need a volunteer or two to form a planning committee and work together to select a venue for the October Semi-Annual Meeting.

3rd VP

James Perry

Plans were finalized to once again travel to New York commemorate the 1776 Battle of Brooklyn this summer on August 20. The 241st anniversary of the determined actions of the “Maryland 400” will include a visit to the Old Stone House, a commemorative ceremony honoring the Maryland troops, luncheon, and a wreath-laying ceremony at the 1895 Maryland Monument in nearby Prospect Park. Raised in early 1776, the First Maryland Regiment joined the rest of the American troops that made up the Continental Army in New York City in August, on the eve of the Battle of Brooklyn. That battle, also called the Battle of Long Island, was the first major engagement of the war, and was an overwhelming British victory. Only the heroic stand by a small group of Marylanders—now known as the Maryland 400—held the British at bay long enough to allow the Continental Army to escape total destruction, at the cost of many Maryland lives. Finding the Maryland 400 is an effort to discover and explore the lives and stories of Maryland’s first war heroes, led by the Maryland State Archives in partnership with MDSSAR. Follow its progress at https://msamaryland400.wordpress.com/. Watch for an announcement of the August 20th Brooklyn trip and send in your reservations to secure space on the bus. C.A.R., D.A.R., and other interested parties are welcome on this meaningful and enjoyable day!

Registrar

Chris Christou

As you may have heard this will be my last year as Registrar after having completed 7 years so far. I have decided to reduce the number of roles in each society as I do quite a lot already such as this newsletter, several articles on genealogy, applications, etc. It is my hope that my backfill will perform to the same high level and keep Maryland in good graces with National. My report of last year’s applications that were approved as well as the number for the past several years is also included and the list of the highest 5 sponsors this year. Just a reminder that a first line sponsor is given a Liberty Medal by National after getting ten applications approved. We always need help with new members applications so if you are interested in helping, please contact me at [email protected] or 410-574-5467. You would be assigned to help applicants where a chapter does not have a registrar or a member at large application.

Genealogist Christopher

Smithson

I recently I found myself looking for additional information on a person for a supplemental SAR Application. The normal birth, marriage and death dates didn’t seem like I had enough information on the person I was looking for. I then remembered a book I had in my personal library, “Hidden Sources” by Laura Szucs Pfeiffer. The book is full of different types of records that are much more than birth, marriage and death records. There are coroner’s inquest records, Homestead Records, Midwife Records, Prison Records, School Censuses, Social Security Records just to name a few. The book also contains images of documents that they have discussed in the book. When working on your family history, remember these “Hidden Sources.” They may just lead you to a new discovery in your family tree or as some say, break down your brick wall to do a supplemental application.

Historian

James Perry

At the George Washington Birthday Luncheon on 18 February 2017, MDSSAR Secretary Pat Warner donated an original framed Sons of the American Revolutionary War membership certificate to our collection. Thanks to Pat’s generosity, the 1895 certificate of Edward Austin Jenkins (NSSAR 1186 and MDSSAR 186), dating from the sixth year of our State Society, is an important artifact from a prominent Baltimorean. Jenkins joined SAR through the service of his great grandfather, Maryland Militia Captain Edward Plowden, who later served in the state legislature. They contain the official records of MDSSAR’s activities, as well as those of the individual chapters. For research access, contact Historian James M. Perry, [email protected] or (301) 320-1863.

National Trustee

Jim Engler

At the Spring Leadership Meeting, there were several items that came up for Trustee Approval:

• I voted with the Trustees on a motion to require that a form of Guidelines/disclosures for anyone running for General Offices be signed, this move will allow nominees from the floor to sign the guidelines at that time.

• I voted with the Trustees on a motion to take $55K from bequests to reduce the debt.

• I voted against a move that required that an applicant must provide a birth certificate that shows the applicant as a male: I believe this to be unnecessary, as applicants usually provide the birth certificate anyway to provide the link to their parents.

• There was considerable discussion on approval of a SolidLight like-kind exhibit: $550K. (a) changes project management; (b) removed reference to step 2 & 3 1.8M, 550K, 300K; (c) start March, option Aug to discontinue - changed to require; (d) reasonable reimbursements. This was about changes to the contract for an in-kind donation, and having the Trustees approve the EXCOM making final approval. I spoke up on this point, that while I encouraged negotiations, I felt it premature for Trustees to approve, or have EXCOM approve on our part. I voted against the motion, but it was still approved by the Trustees

Committee Reports

American Flag With last minute reports in for 2016, Maryland reached its goal for the ADM Furlong award (majority of chapters present a flag award, plus the state society presenting at least one). No flag certificates have been reported issued to date for 2017. The reporting period for awarding Flag Certificates is 1 January to 31 December. All chapters are urged to present flag certificates and report to the state Flag Chairman when done.

Americanism The Americanism 2016 Score Sheets were submitted for the 1 March 2017 on behalf of all 15 chapters and the Maryland State Society and are shown below. The table also shows whether these overall numbers for each chapter are up or down over the previous year’s final reported values from the national Americanism Committee. Chapters are grouped by class size, and ordered from highest total Americanism (service to the community) point counts to lowest in their category. Overall, only one chapter did not increase and total Americanism points, and that can be explained by having had a big 250th celebration event in 2015; the chapter’s 2016 numbers exceeded their 2014 values, indicating they are still growing in activity. This points out that the historical trends in chapter activity should be considered rather than single year rises or dips. All chapters increase in the PG Streamer category (activity and service to SAR). The 2016 entries were more complete than the previous year, although due to some missing information some chapters and the state society as a whole could not take credit for all of the activity. The 2017 Americanism Score Sheet has been published by the national Americanism Committee. These have been sent to the chapter points of contact.

Americanism Brochure Contest This year’s winner of the Brochure Contest was Hannah Ezell from Harford Day School (COL Aquila Hall Chapter) and the second place winner was Madison Cote from Our Lady of Hope/ St Luke School in Baltimore County (COL Nicholas Ruxton Moore Chapter). Both brochures were on The Federalist Papers. I wish to thank this year’s judges Jim Engler, Barry McKown, David Hoover, James Perry and Chris Raborg for all their help. National winners for all youth contests will be announced at the Youth Awards Luncheon on July 10th in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Her entry was on Molly Pitcher. The second place winner was Parker Smethurst from Wicomico Day School (CAPT John Smoot Chapter) and his drawing was on Samuel Chase. The third place winner was Jakmine Flowers from the Harford Day school (COL Aquila Hall Chapter) and her entry was on Lydia Darragh. Elisabeth’s poster will now be entered in the National Contest and be judged in July at our annual conference, held this year in Knoxville, TN.

Atlantic Middle States Conference Pennsylvania State Society SAR is the host of the 2017 Annual Conference 11-13 August at the Wyndham Hotel in nearby Gettysburg, PA. Why not consider joining compatriots from as far away as New York and hear what is going on in the region. The registration from can be found at http://www.passar.org/Forms/AMS92716A.pdf.

Annual Meeting The MDSSAR met in Annapolis on 29 April. Reports of officers, committees and chapters were submitted prior to the meeting and are available on line at the state website. First VP Deering discussed the new version of the SAR car plates, which needs a few final touches before it is ready for release. No new business was discussed. President William Smithson, accompanied by First Vice President Donald Deering and Awards and Medals Committee Chairman John “J.D.” Urbach, presented the SAR Silver Good Citizenship Medal to the Honorable George W. Owings III, secretary of the Maryland Department of Veterans Affairs and a member of the SAR, in recognition of his support on behalf of our organization. Judge C. Phillip Nichols introduced the Honorable Thomas “Mike” Miller, president of the state of Maryland Senate, who talked about the history of the Maryland Statehouse and the recent restoration efforts. He went into detail regarding the restoration of the Old Senate Chamber where General George Washington gave his resignation as commander of the American army. Following lunch, the state Orations were held. In a first of its kind, two of the competitors were unable to attend, and under SAR supervision recorded their speeches in single attempts. These were presented, as well as the remaining competitor giving his speech before the assembled audience. Following the orations awards ceremony, medals were presented to Compatriots and the new state officers and board sworn in by Past President General Joe Dooley.

CAR/DAR/SAR Liaison During the term of President Smithson, one of the two presented debutantes for the 2016 MDSSAR Patriots’ Ball was Erin Catherine Moore. She was recently elected as the National President of the Children of the American Revolution in Alexandria Virginia. Miss Moore was a stunning debutante and superb selection to lead the national society this year. Congratulations to Erin Moore for her election as National President. We are looking forward to her new project and theme this year - James Monroe Browsing History to raise $25,000 for the James Monroe Online searchable archival collections which is devoted to our nation's fifth President and his long lasting accomplishments. We look forward to this summer’s Regional Meetings to announce this year’s contests and programs and invite all SAR members to join in the fun to support this project. Join us for the Eastern Regional Tour 12-13 July 2017 in Delaware.

Council of Past Presidents A multi-volume handbook has been drafted by Compatriot Jim Engler. The Council, current state officers and committee chairs, as well as all chapter presidents, have been asked to review and comment on them. Based on the collected knowledge of current and past officers and chairmen, the objective of the volumes is to give helpful information to allow those new to their offices and committees to more effectively carry out their roles from the beginning. For chapters, the associated volume helps explain the variety of programs and activities that could help them become more active.

MD 400 Project I am pleased to report that the next phase of our Maryland 400 research project at the Maryland Archives has begun. Our new intern is Taylor Blades and she is a student at Washington College where she is working toward her B.A. in Political Science and Environmental Studies. She has a strong interest in Maryland history, particularly pertaining to the Chesapeake Bay. Our longer term hire for the project, Natalie Miller just graduated from Randolph College with a BA in history and a minor in museum studies and started on 5 June. Countless generations of her family have lived throughout Maryland, most on the Eastern Shore. She would like to thank the Maryland Society Sons of the American Revolution for providing her with this opportunity. Follow the research progress at Finding the Maryland 400 https://msamaryland400.wordpress.com or join the 2,262 individuals receiving email updates by submitting your email at the Finding the Maryland 400 homepage. We have also partnered with Washington College’s C.V. Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience as we look to the publication of the Maryland 400 research upon completion of the project. Adam Goodheart of the Starr Center spoke to us at the October semiannual meeting in Chestertown and is very interested in ensuring this project is a success. Learn more about the Starr Center at https://www.washcoll.edu/centers/starr/. I have been taking the story of the Maryland 400 on the road to DAR Chapters, local historical societies and recently presented to the Maryland Society of the Colonial Dames of America. Many are unaware of the important role of Marylanders during the Revolutionary War. We can honor their service by continuing to tell their story.

Patriot Biographies Closes another year. Now in its third year, as of 22 May 2017, the National Society received 5,759 submissions from 49 State Societies and from Non-SAR Members. Nearly three dozen new biographies were added this year by Maryland Compatriots. The official count for Maryland and its chapters has now increased to 368 biographies submitted. This represents 52.6 % of the number of MDSSAR members used for the contest’s calculations. This year three additional Maryland chapters earned the streamer award: SGT Lawrence Everhart, John Paul Jones, and Thomas Stone. Now all 15 chapters have streamers. Two chapters have earned an extra star for their existing streamers: COL Aquila Hall and Westminster. The Patriot Biographies Project was instituted by the National Society in 2014.

The intent was to submit biographies of Patriot Ancestors that could be added to the Patriot and Graves Index maintained by the National Society. Submissions were to be MS Word documents of between 250 and 500 words in length. In the first year any chapter or state society (where the state was the sum of submissions by chapters and at-large members) which submitted a number of reports equal to 25% of their start of the year membership would receive a streamer. That very first year Maryland achieved a streamer, as did 12 of its 15 chapters. Streamers were presented at the 2015 National Congress in Louisville, Kentucky. The next year, the contest changed, and any chapter or state society achieving 20% would get a streamer, with an additional star provided for each 20% above that original 20%. The total was based on the cumulative number of biographies from that and the previous year. Awards were made at the 2016 Congress. With the 2017 contest year just starting, and over 200,000 SAR members and many times that number of DAR members, there are countless Heroes that are still unknown to the general public. Will you help us fulfill one of the missions of the SAR and submit your Patriot’s biographical sketch?

Charles Carroll of Carrollton With assistance from past State President James Engler, by-laws chair Guy Miller, prepared new by-laws for the chapter. The by-laws were reviewed at our spring meeting, 25 March 2017. After further refinement they will be adopted. Paul Turlington awarded the JROTC medals and certificates to cadets Shane J. Dunn (Atholton High School) and Jenna Peed (Howard High School). The chapter is collaborating with Richard Azzaro, a member of The Society of the Honor Guard, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, to remember COL Gassaway Watkins, one of the Maryland 400 who also served in the War of 1812. His grave was been marked by DAR and SAR some years ago. Mr. Azzaro was impressed with the Maryland 400 project and is the lead organizer for the commemoration.

Trusting primary records

Although the SAR requires primary records for proof, can you trust all contemporary records? Most will have accurate information but not all. For example, what do you do when you have conflicts with a death date on a tombstone, obituary or death certificate for the same person?

• Death certificates are contemporary government records but most of the data is from a secondary source and are notoriously flawed with missing or incorrect parents’ names or birthdates. Besides the informant grieving, the clerk may mishear or write down the wrong information.

• Obituaries are contemporary public records but are subject to the memory of the informant and printer errors. There may be even a tendency to exaggerate a deceased’s accomplishments. Amer. Rev. service for example cannot be proven in SAR with an obituary.)

• Tombstones are private family memorials which may be put up years later and memories fade or the carver makes a mistake. (Non-contemporary tombstones such a 20th century tombstone for an Amer. Rev. ancestor are not acceptable as proof).

Besides errors of memory or mistakes, there may even be fraud involved. Chris Smithson found a great example of this in a 1901 article about the trial of census enumerator Stephen Abell and others who "falsely enumerated" 394 names on the St. Mary's

census (maybe to increase their pay or to get more federal dollars to their area).

My approval process involves a review of all submitted primary records and we use a term Genealogical Standards of Proof when saying the lineage is approved because it is not absolute and it always subject to newer information coming forward.

(See a fuller article regarding primary record flaws in the Maryland Genealogical Society Bulletin Vol. 49 No 1 Issue 2008).
