Announcements

Parking lot reminder Coming off of Toronto Street there are two lanes. The right lane is for buses and traffic going around MDJH. The left lane is for parents/ guardians dropping off their children. PLEASE pull up to the STOP sign before letting your child out! The drop off lane should only be used for quick stop, drop and go, even if the doors are not open yet. If parents do not want to leave until the doors open, they should move ahead and park in the parking lot. Please take a moment to watch MDJH Drop off Video… the people may have changed but the instructions are still the same! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ptikIbLLhvo

MDJH is on the map ... our school is registered on the Hour of Code website. Mr. Gillard has registered with "Scratch," which is an MIT initiative. He will be using this with Grade 7 and 8 students. He is also going to install a program in Room 119 called "Processing" which can be used for teaching some Java, but he is also looking at the Python version. He is looking at "Processing" for enrichment purposes.

Computer Science Education Week occurs from December 5 to 11, 2016. Everyone is invited to participate in an Hour of Code. The Hour of Code is a global movement reaching tens of millions of students in 180+ countries.

The Newfoundland and Labrador English School District recognizes the importance of computers, computer science, and coding and encourages all school communities to try cod-ing. Not only is it fun, it encourages logical thinking and provides exciting career opportunities.

During the month of December, MDJH will have all grade 7 to 9 students participate in an Hour of Code with their homeroom. Many of these clas-ses will happen during a scheduled Technology Education class and others will be scheduled at another time. The Hour of Code will be an opportunity for all students to be exposed to this international movement promoting the value of coding (computer programming) in education and

specifically higher order technological literacy skills.

Below are resources that can help students/parents/teachers get started in coding, or enhance the activities that students may have already begun in school and/or at home.

Request for Support: 3-D Printing

Have you heard about Additive Manufacturing?

Maybe not. The popular term is 3-D printing; try

Googling the concept and you will find that there

has been a significant number of articles written

about the innovative uses of 3-D Printing as a

production/manufacturing process. MDJH is

looking to expose its students to a design pro-

cess utilizing this current technology. Even

though the price tag on 3-D Printing has dropped

significantly in the last couple of years, it is still a

specialty item and we need support from our

school community to invest in this direction. Is

there a company or companies that would be

interested in assisting us in making this initiative

a reality? The startup costs for 3-D printing is

approximately $4000.00. Any interested per-

sons please contact Wade Gillard

([email protected]).
