CMEA Builders Award Recipient

In co-operation with its Provincial and Territorial Affiliates, the Canadian Music Educators’ Associa-tion seeks to recognize those who advance music education in any Canadian province, through building community or establishing significant collaborative efforts, with the CMEA/Acme Builders Award.

The CMEA/Acme Builders Award is presented annually to a music educator who brings honour to the profession by demonstrating one or more of the following: ● Building a more unified community of music educators

● Raising the profile of the value of music education in Canada

● Making a significant contribution to inter-provincial or national initiatives in music education

● Establishing sustainable collaborative initiatives in music education

● Developing mentorship initiatives for newer and/or pre-service music educators

The NLTA Music Special Interest Council is pleased to present the 2017 Builders Award for New-foundland & Labrador to Sarah Comerford.

Sarah Comerford currently teaches instrumental music and social studies at Macdonald Drive Junior High in St. John’s. She has received undergraduate degrees in music and music education and holds a masters degree in instrumental conducting from Memorial University of Newfoundland. Active in the music community, Sarah has served on various music festival committees, is Past- President of the NLTA Music Special Interest Council, and performs with the Newfoundland Sym-phony Orchestra and Lady Cove Women’s Choir.

Throughout her career thus far, Sarah has worked extremely hard to develop and build the music program not only for her school but for our province. She regularly acts as a cooperating teacher for interns from Memorial University, works tirelessly to find innovative ways to engage students, is a successful grant applicant for building the instrument inventory at her school and regularly presents professional development sessions to teachers across the province.

Elizabeth Ares, principal of Leary’s Brook Junior high writes -“Sarah is the epitome of what it means to be a “builder”. She is innovative, creative, collaborative, socially-just, flexible, hard working and dedicated. Her energy and enthusiasm are contagious and inspirational.”

Congratulations, Sarah!

Celebrating Student’s Successes

We want to acknowledge and celebrate the accomplishments of the students of MDJH. We have a wall of celebration where we will place a certificate of acknowledgement highlighting participation and success in a variety of activities. We want to know if your child has participated in any plays, musicals or has been on a team that has won a title or has been recog-nized in any individual competition. We need your help with this. Please let us know so we can proudly display this on our wall. Please email [email protected] with Celebrate YOUR CHILD’S NAME in the subject line.

Photography Club

Photography club meets every second Wednesday. Each month there is a photo contest. The theme for this month is Halloween. Club members are reminded to please submit their photos to [email protected]

We need your help! Be a volunteer!

The Scholastic Book Fair will be arriving soon, and we’re excited about sharing the joy of reading with our students. We invite you to participate in this year’s Scholastic Book Fair from November 27th-30th, by volunteering.

Scholastic Book Fairs gives our school the oppor-tunity to bring families, teachers, students, and books together. It’s the ultimate book event! Addi-tionally, a portion of the sales benefits our school library. It’s the best way to raise funds while encour-aging kids to read.

Being a part of something special is easier than you think. There are lots of ways to volunteer. We need people in a variety of areas, including helping with promotion, hanging posters and banners, and spreading the word about our Book Fair, merchandising our Book Fair and table displays to cre-ate a terrific bookstore environment, greeting customers at the door and working at our Cashier Ta-ble and helping students and shoppers select just the right books.

If you are interested in volunteering or learning more about our Scholastic Book Fair, please con-tact: Beth Power, [email protected] or 753-8240 ext 231.

Thank you in advance for helping to make our students lifelong readers – we couldn’t do it without your participation.

Student Drop Off / Pick Up

Student Entrance

For student drop-off, stay in the left lane in a single line as you enter the school grounds.

When you turn left in front of the building, proceed as far as possible to the right (closest to the cement divider) before dropping your children off. Please wait for the vehicles in front of you to drop off students before proceeding.

Through traffic stays to the left in front of the student entrance.

Busses will enter the school grounds in the right lane and proceed to the far right clos-est to the building.

Note: Only staff and alternate transportation should travel in the right lane to proceed around the building.

Ms. Pike and Ms. Hardy will be out each day, rain or shine, to help direct traffic.

If you arrive before Ms. Pike and Ms. Hardy open the doors, please do not park and wait in front of the school doors, you are block-ing traffic. Please proceed to the parking lot and park there so other cars can get through.

If you drop your child off on Toronto St. or Quebec St. please drive past the crosswalk before stopping to let them out. If you stop before the crosswalk, cars behind you can-not see children as they cross the road.
