Local shoppers turn out for after-Christmas dealsBy HEIDI LITCHFIELD

[email protected]

MORRIS – Shoppers wereout in force the day afterChristmas to find the best dealsin downtown Morris.

At 9:30 a.m. Friday, whenWhimsy opened its doors forthe day, a line of customerswaited to get in to take advan-tage of day after Christmasprices.

“We’ve been very busy,”said Barb Rymarczyk, an em-ployee at Whimsy. “We have50 percent off Christmas itemsand the people came in andwent right to what they want-ed.”

She said the warmer weath-er Friday or people having anextra day off may have kept thestore filled with people most ofthe day.

It was great to see a lot ofpeople from out of town shop-ping in downtown Morris, Ry-marczyk said.

Around the corner at GiGi’s,Cortney Aramburu shoppedfor clothes for herself.

“I’m out doing returns andexchanges, but I’m also buyingthings for me,” she said. “As Ishopped for others, I saw thingsI liked and now it’s time to buythem for me.”

Carol Thompson and JeanKasper came to Morris from

Plainfield to spend the dayshopping and talking togeth-er. The sisters said they aren’tusually together the day af-ter Christmas so it was fun to

spend the day together.“We’re just out having a

good time,” Thompson said asthey looked at items for sale inGiGi’s.

Melissa Isham and KathyByczynksi manned the counterand said they were busy all day.

“We’ve been very busy.A lot of people have come in

with gift certificates,” Ishamsaid. “Others have said theystill have Christmas parties togo to through the weekend, sothe holiday isn’t done for themyet.”

According to the Nation-al Retail Federation, 20 to 40percent of yearly sales forsmall and mid-sized retailerstake place within the last twomonths of the year, with theday after Christmas falling inline behind Black Friday andShop Local Saturday.

It’s not just the small lo-cal stores that experiencethe crowd of shoppers for af-ter-Christmas sales.

Judy Anderson said shespent the morning Friday go-ing from one big box store tothe next to find the best dealson wrapping paper and bowsfor next year.

“I go out every year whenthe stores first open and buyall my wrapping paper fornext year,” she said. “It doesn’tmake sense to pay full price forit each year when you can justthink ahead and shop for it at adiscount.”

She said she used to takeher kids with when they wereyounger so they could spendtheir gift cards, but now thatthey have moved out on theirown, she spends the day shop-ping by herself.

Grundy County sheriff’s deputies cracking down on drunken driversMORRIS DAILY HERALD

MORRIS – Grundy Coun-ty sheriff’s deputies are out inforce as part of the annual Illi-nois “Drive Sober or Get PulledOver” crackdown on drunkendrivers. The statewide effortwill include alcohol and seatbelt enforcement throughoutGrundy County.

The crackdown also willbe supported by national andstate paid advertising, creatinga comprehensive campaign tocurb drunken driving throughthe new year, according to anews release from Sheriff KevinCallahan’s office.

Callahan said deputies willbe aggressively looking for in-toxicated drivers during the

crackdown and will arrest any-one caught driving drunk. Inaddition, front and back seatbelt law violators will be tick-eted.

“You’ll see us out thereduring this highly visible en-forcement period. Drunk driv-ers will be arrested and thosenot observing seat belt laws willbe ticketed,” Callahan said in

the release. The sheriff noted that be-

ing arrested for driving drunkbrings a wide range of negativeconsequences. Drunken driversface jail time, loss of their driv-er’s licenses, and steep financialconsequences such as higherinsurance rates, attorney fees, court costs, lost time at workand the potential loss of employ-

ment.“Driving drunk is simply

not worth the risk. So don’t takethe chance. Remember, we willbe out in force and we will bewatching, so drive sober or getpulled over,” Callahan said.

The law enforcement crack-down is funded by federal trafficsafety funds through the IllinoisDepartment of Transportation.

Disaster Fund receives donations from local charitiesBy CHRISTINA

CHAPMAN–VAN [email protected]

MORRIS – A permanentDisaster Fund has been estab-lished to prepare Grundy Coun-ty for the worst.

The fund is with the Com-munity Foundation of GrundyCounty and has $20,000 in it –$10,000 donated apiece by thefoundation and Operation St.Nick. The money will grow inthe fund with the foundationand will be available immedi-ately, according to the founda-tion.

“We donated $10,000 eachto kick off the Disaster ReliefFund,” said Joe Schmitz, St.Nick president. “We would liketo build it up to $100,000 andhopefully never need it.”

St. Nick has made a one-timedonation and the foundation isplanning on making annual do-nations, Julie Buck, foundation

executive director said Friday.United Way of Grundy

County and We Care of GrundyCounty also team up with thefoundation and St. Nick when adisaster strikes, such as the No-vember 2013 EF2 tornado thatdamaged more than 200 homesand businesses, providing mon-ey through their resources,Buck said.

The Disaster Fund is opento donations from the public, aswell.

After the area was hit by aflood and later a tornado in

2013, the foundation, St. Nick,United Way and We Care cametogether to raise money to helpvictims.

The organizations and theirvolunteers teamed up to helpwith immediate needs for peo-ple affected while they waitedon help from state and federalorganizations such as FEMA.

Families received minigrants formed from the fundsraised. The organizations gaveout more than $400,000 to areafamilies and businesses recov-ering from the tornado thathit the Coal City and Diamondarea.

Schmitz said the DisasterFund will assist with clothing,

food, prescriptions and otherimmediate needs victims havethat can’t wait.

What constitutes a disasterwill vary on a case-by-case ba-sis, but is meant for events thataffect a wide-range of people orareas, not, for instance, a singlehouse fire, Buck said.

Response will depend on theseverity of the impact and thestatus of state and federal help, she said.

The groups will form a com-mittee that will set guidelinesfor the fund’s use and will beready when, if ever, the next di-saster strikes.

“Last year’s tornado in Di-amond and Coal City was aquick initiation for our area’sagencies and organizations. Weall feel better prepared for thefuture – we know our strengthsand what resources we canquickly bring to the table andout to the community,” Bucksaid in the release.

Kinzinger, Lipinski say new federal lawwill supportmanufacturingBy VIKAAS SHANKER

[email protected]

Illinois manufacturers mayget a boost from a bill intro-duced by members of the localcongressional delegation thatrequires a national strategicmanufacturing plan.

“Illinois is still one of thetop manufacturing states in thecountry,” U.S. Rep. Dan Lip-inski, D-Western Springs, said

Tuesday. “We’veseen manufac-turing get hitover the decadesand the reces-sion. I think thatthis could reallyhelp make a dif-ference in manu-facturing in thestate.”

T h e p r e s -ident last week signed theAmerican ManufacturingCompetitiveness Act into law, said Lipinski, who introducedthe measure. U.S. Rep. AdamKinzinger, R-Channahon,co-sponsored the bill, and Sen.Mark Kirk, R-Illinois, carriedthe measure in the Senate.

“I’m proud to see this im-portant piece of legislation

signed into law,” Kinzingersaid in a news release from hisoffice issued after the legisla-tion was signed. “The UnitedStates simply cannot affordto continue to lose manufac-turing jobs to other countries.

The American ManufacturingCompetitiveness Act will helpus use the resources we alreadyhave to put us back on top and

create new middle-class jobs.”The act requires a National

Strategic Plan for Manufactur-ing. The president sets a plan at

least every four years by work-ing with “manufacturing ex-perts from the private and pub-lic sectors to assess the stateof American manufacturingand make recommendationsfor policies that will help growAmerican manufacturing,”a news release from Lipinskistates.

“The people of Illinois re-flect the highest work ethic ofthe Midwest,” Kirk said in thenews release. “It’s those menand women who keep me opti-mistic about the future of Illi-nois and the future of manufac-turing as a pillar of the Illinoiseconomy.”

Lipinski likened the manu-facturing plan to the Quadren-nial Defense Review, whichsets long-term goals for theDepartment of Defense and thecountry’s safety.

“With the financial crisis,I saw change in Washington,”Lipinski said about views onmanufacturing. “When wewent into recession, I thinkthere was more understandingof how important manufactur-ing is to the U.S.”

14OPINIONOUR VIEW

An unfulfilledanthem of peace

In the second chapter of theGospel of Luke, an angel appearsto shepherds near Bethlehem andproclaims the birth of a savior.

Then, other angels appear andsing, “Glory to God in the high-est, and on earth, peace, goodwill toward men.”

Peace on earth. What a diffi-cult goal to accomplish in an ageof terrorism and armed conflict, even in the Christmas season, even 20 centuries after the angelssang.

One century ago, soldiersfighting in the fifth month of theGreat War, later renamed WorldWar I, gave peace on earth achance.

The Christmas Truce of 1914was not ordered by statesmen orgenerals.

It happened spontaneouslyalong Europe’s Western Front.

From inside trenches dug inBelgian and French soil by Brit-ish and German soldiers, Christ-mas carols were sung, the wordsand melodies drifting across thecold, deadly no-man’s land.

Then, unbelievably, soldierswho had killed each other by thethousands cautiously rose upfrom their trenches on Christ-mas Day, apprehensively walkedinto the muddy no-man’s land, greeted each other, exchangedgifts and even kicked around asoccer ball.

Several dozen such unofficialarmistices occurred along thefront, much to the joy of the sol-diers, and much to the consterna-tion of their leaders. Accordingto the Associated Press, thoseleaders ordered Christmasartillery attacks in 1915, 1916 and1917 to make sure troop-inspiredtruces never happened again.

A century after the Christ-mas Truce of 1914, we honor thesoldiers who sought respite fromthe horrors of war by having thecourage to embrace peace.

During the holiday seasonof 2014, let’s remember theirexample.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of

speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.THE FIRSTAMENDMENT

Future uncertain, Romney sits atop GOP pollsIt can be hard to take the

idea of a Mitt Romney 2016presidential run seriously. After all, this is the man whosaid of losing general electioncandidates, “They becomea loser for life.” At least inpresidential terms, he hadthat mostly right.

But what to make of pollscontinuing to show Romneyat the head of the Republicanpresidential pack a little morethan a year before the Iowacaucuses? A new Fox Newssurvey finds Romney the GOPleader, with 19 percent, aheadof Jeb Bush, who is pretty farback at 10 percent. Everybodyelse is bunched togetherbehind Bush.

A Washington Post/ABCNews poll showed a similar re-sult, as did other recent pollsfrom McClatchy-Marist andQuinnipiac. In all, Romneyhovered around 20 percent, well ahead of the GOP field.

Many polls don’t includeRomney in their surveys. But the ones that do suggestthat, at least for now, Rom-ney is a front-runner, if notthe front-runner in the 2016Republican race.

People in Romney’s circle

realize some of his standingin the polls reflects nothingmore than name recognition;everybody knows the guy whoran for president in 2012. Butthey believe there’s more to itthan that. In discussions thisweek, they pointed to whatthey think is a widespreadbelief among voters, certainlyamong Republicans, that Rom-ney was right about some keyissues in the 2012 campaign.

Some of the people whotalk with Romney say theyspecifically avoid the subjectof his running in 2016. Theystill believe he would be agood president, but they don’twant to push. “I don’t presshim on it,” says yet anotherin Romney’s circle. “It’s apersonal decision.”

“I don’t bring it up,” saysanother. “When we talk, wetalk about what’s going on inthe world.”

Some of the donors whosupported Romney in 2012aren’t so shy; they’re happy

to tell Romney they believe heshould run again. “He’s beingencouraged by people everyday,” says one confidant.

The big mystery, of course,is what Romney himself isthinking. As long as Romneykeeps quiet, the outside worldwill be guessing. But it’sprobably smart to divide thequestion into two parts.

The first is what Rom-ney thinks about the actualdecision to run or not torun. That, nobody knows. The second is what Romneythinks about who would bethe best president. That’s notso mysterious. Romney ranin 2012 because he believed hewas the best man for the job. There’s no indication he haschanged his mind.

Those close to Romneydon’t believe the recent movesby Jeb Bush, who now sayshe is “actively exploring” apresidential run, will haveany effect on Romney. A big-ger question will be whethera leader emerges in the GOPfield to bring Republicanvoters together.

So here is a scenario. TheRepublican race that devel-ops in 2015 is splintered and

unhappy, with no candidategaining the stature andrespect needed to make a goodnominee. The campaign be-comes a protracted fight thatdiminishes each of its partici-pants. Party leaders look for asavior. Romney is there.

It probably won’t happen. And Romney knows – weknow he knows because hehas said as much – that apolitical figure who has a haloaround his head when he isout of the fray will be justanother punching bag if hegets in.

Still, there are the polls. And, for some of those aroundRomney, the hope. Right now,all they know is that there is achance – maybe a tiny one, buta chance – of another run.

“I can’t really put any kindof prediction on it,” says oneof the Romneyworld insidersof the possibility that Romneywill run again. “I wouldn’tsay there is zero chance of it.I would definitely not say it iszero.”

16 BOYS BASKETBALL: MORRIS 51, SENECA 41

Redskins down Irish to advance in Plano tourneyBy ROB OESTERLE

[email protected]

PLANO – After nearly twoweeks without a game, Mor-ris boys basketball coach JoeBlumberg was a bit concernedhis Redskins might be rustyat the start of Friday’s gameagainst Seneca in the 52ndannual Plano Christmas Clas-sic. Couple with the fact thatSeneca had beaten Princeton,64-60, Tuesday in tourney ac-tion, and the concern was mul-tiplied.

The Redskins laid that con-cern to rest early, playing tightdefense and controlling theboards in taking a 26-16 leadinto halftime. Morris kept thatcushion for most of the sec-ond half and came away witha 51-41 win. The sixth-seededRedskins (6-3), who finishedsecond in the tournament lastseason, move on to play No.3 seed Burlington Central at7 p.m. today. The Rockets de-

feated Kaneland, 66-57, Friday.“I was more concerned with

how we would start today,”Blumberg said. “We haven’tplayed since the 13th (againstYorkville) and it’s the day af-ter a holiday. Plus, Seneca wascoming in with a lot of confi-dence after beating Princeton.

“Holding them to a 16-pointfirst half was a good start.”

The Redskins jumped outto a 5-0 lead on a 3-pointer byAustin Patterson, who led allscorers with 26 points, anda bucket by Griffin Sobol (6points). Seneca (4-8) answeredwith a 3-pointer by Ross Mc-

Cormick, who led the Irishwith 17 points, and a basket byDevin Bryant (five points) totie the score at 5. Morris fin-ished the first quarter withan old-fashioned three-pointplay by Cody Niewinski (fivepoints) and another 3-pointerby Patterson.

Baskets by Evan Bjelland(seven points) and Sobol sand-wiched a hoop by McCormickto start the second quarterbefore Niewinski scored, andSobol got a steal and a layupto give Morris a 19-8 lead. Sen-eca then got a 3-point play byArik Applebee and a 3-pointerby Sean Baker to pull to within19-14 before Morris closed thehalf on a 7-2 run, capped by an-other Patterson 3.

“We played hard, but I wasa little disappointed with ourstart,” Seneca coach RussellWitte said. “We let them dic-tate the tempo on both offenseand defense. We don’t have areal strong inside game right

now, so if we aren’t makingjump shots, we struggle. Andwe didn’t make many in thefirst half.

“We wanted to take theiroffensive glass away becausethey are a good reboundingteam, and we weren’t able todo that very well. And Patter-son is a good shooter who isvery good when you give himtime to get set, which we didtoo often.”

McCormick scored 10 ofSeneca’s 12 points in the thirdquarter, and Patterson had 10of Morris’ 13 as the Redskinstook a 39-28 lead into thefourth. The lead reached 48-32with 3:24 to play before Senecaended the game on a 9-3 spurt.

“This is the second gamein a row where we didn’t han-dle pressure well late in thegame,” Blumberg said. “Wehave to keep working on that. And, in our next game, we aregoing to have to be more phys-ical in order to win.”

BOYS BASKETBALL: AURORA CHRISTIAN 68, NEWARK 52

Even with Clausel, Norsemen still can’t solve EaglesBy RYAN WOODEN

Shaw Media Correspondent

PLANO – In the eightdays since Newark’s boysbasketball team traveled toAurora Christian, Newarkcoach Rick Tollefson hoped ahealthier roster might serveto change the 74-48 outcome. When the two teams faced offDec. 18, he didn’t have bigman Jack Clausel in the cen-ter of his offense and on Fri-day afternoon he was back.

Unfortunately for theNorseman, Clausel’s 11 sec-o n d - h a l f p o i n t s w e r e n ’ tenough as Aurora Christiandefeated Newark again, thistime by a score of 68-52 to ad-vance to the Round of 8 in thePlano Christmas Classic.

“[Aurora Christian] isquick, and they’re very phys-ical. They put a lot of handson you,” Tollefson said afterFriday’s loss. “I wouldn’t saywe were at full strength be-cause Jack (Clausel) was sickand he’s been sick for awhileand I’ve got a guy (guard

Matt Eike) who has a wristinjury that can’t shoot.

“But we had a lot of op-portunities and then they gothot. I think their physicalplay got to us.”

The game started relative-ly sloppy coming off the hol-

iday break, as both Newarkand Aurora Christian com-bined to turn the ball over12 times in the first quar-ter. However, Newark’s cold2-for-11 start from the floorput the Norseman in a 14-9hole at the end of one.

In the second quarter, Au-rora Christian extended thatlead out to nine before an11-4 Newark run would cut itto 22-20. That was as close asthe game would get, as Auro-ra Christian hit its final fiveshots of the half and finished

on a 9-2 run to take a 31-22cushion to the break.

“The kids were all pumpedup,” Aurora Christian coachPat McNamara said of theEagles’ late first-half run.“They were all excited outthere when [Zach Singer]hit a 3 from the corner overthere and that really gave usa lot of momentum going intohalftime.

“We always stress comingout in the first three min-utes of the second half with alead and really knocking ’emout.”

And knock Newark outthey did.

Aurora Christian openedthe second half on a 12-3 runthat extended its lead to 18,and never looked back on itsway to the win.

Behind 14 points fromSinger and 13 points from Ju-wan Sisco, Aurora Christianimproved to 7-1 on the season.Newark (5-7) was paced by 13points from Steve McGrath. The Norsemen will play St.Bedeat at 2 p.m. today.

BOYS BASKETBALL: FORRESTON 68, COAL CITY 41

Coalers’ struggles continue in loss to CardinalsBy RYAN WOODEN

Shaw Media Correspondent

PLANO – Coming off a37-point drubbing at the handsof St. Bede in the openinground of the Plano ChristmasClassic, the Coal City boys bas-ketball team hoped to be ableto use its consolation bracketgames to get a young, inexpe-rienced roster some valuedgame repetitions.

On Friday, in a 68-41 loss toForreston, the Coalers did, infact, make some minor strides, but it wasn’t enough to avoidanother lopsided defeat. TheCoalers didn’t shoot well ear-ly, hitting just one of their12 first-quarter field goal at-tempts and falling behind 17-5at the end of one.

However, in the secondquarter, they finally found abit of a rhythm offensively. Fora stretch in the second quarter,Coal City shot 63 percent fromthe field while cutting the For-reston lead to 31-20 powered

by 10 first-half points from for-ward Christian Johnson.

“We can’t score. We’ve beenstruggling to crack 30 points ina game,” Coal City coach BradBoresi said. “It doesn’t matter

how well we execute the of-fense at this point, if we can’tscore, we’re not going to winthe game.

“So I guess that would besomewhat of a bright spot, I

guess scoring 41 points versus31 points is an improvementbut if we don’t pick things upwe won’t win another game allyear.”

Unfortunately for Coal City,

Forreston finished the half on a9-0 run that gave it a 40-20 leadat the break and the Coalerswouldn’t be able to pull within20 points the rest of the night.

In the second half, theCoalers traded baskets withForreston to keep the deficitat 20, but an 11-0 run wouldeventually give Forreston a31-point lead.

“Hopefully, being embar-rassed twice back-to-back willforce out guys to find a littlecompetitiveness in them,”Boresi said.

Forreston was led by 17points from Robert Devries, 12from Ethan Groom and 10 fromMarkus Elder. Coal City waspaced by Johnson’s 10-point ef-fort. Segal Arias chipped in sixpoints while Steven Zhang hithis only two field goal attemptsto finish with five.

Coal City will face Wilm-ington at 3:30 p.m. today in theauxiliary gym.

Paying it forward can be most rewardingI must say, I have seen

and heard of a lot of Christ-mas spirit going around thisyear. I don’t know if it is justme, but it seems that peopleare a little more cheerful andnot quite as rushed as usual.

A very good friend of minecommented on the sameexperiences. She was therecipient, on three sepa-rate occasions, of someonepaying it forward. The firsttime she was at a local salonwhen someone footed thebill for everyone’s servicesthat were in there. This manspent around $500 to makeall these folks’ day a littlebrighter.

The next time she was ata restaurant when someoneout-of-the-blue paid for theirmeal. You would think thattwice in one year was a lot,but then while waiting at afast food restaurant, some-one paid for everyone’s food

in that line. Three times! That just doesn’t happenevery day.

It is really that spirit ofgiving that makes the seasonso special. Yes, we all love toreceive gifts. I like open-ing presents on Christmasmorning just as much as thenext person, but watchingsomeone really appreciatesomething you gave thembecomes more and more im-portant to me every year.

Nature loves to give. There are so many timeswhen we take for granted thegood times we enjoy whileoutdoors. Each opportunitythat I have to float down acrystal clear stream, I tryto appreciate what a gift Iam receiving. The coursingwater propels my little boatthrough abundant naturalbeauty while relaxing andchasing a few fish.

This last summer while

fishing Pool 9 of the Missis-sippi, that river offered upamazing gifts to my familyday-after-day. To watch thebeaming smiles on my sons’faces as they watched theirplastic frogs get annihilatedby ravenous largemouth wasamazing. Just yesterday Ilooked back at some photosof them from that very tripand my heart longed to goback and enjoy Old Man Riv-er one more time.

I could go on for manypages about how the out-doors gives freely of herselfand pays it forward. The realcatch though, is then it is ourturn to do some good deeds. It is our turn to give freely ofourselves.

There are many waysthat a person can do this. Wecould spend a few minuteswalking a road ditch andpicking up trash. It doesn’ttake that long and the bene-fits are enormous.

We could always donatesome of our income to awide variety of conservationgroups. There are so manyfor us to choose from andno matter what your ownpolitical affiliation or beliefs. If you look long enough youwill find there is an organi-zation that aligns itself withyour ideals.

Personally, I like to pay itforward to the outdoors bytaking people fishing. Thereare so many individuals Iknow that love to fish, butmay not have made the timein their busy schedules to ac-tually go out. One year, thenanother, and another, go byand their rods and reels sit

without ever getting used.It brings me great satisfac-

tion to watch someone catcha good fish. I love it whenthey reach over the side ofthe boat and haul in a beauti-ful specimen and hold it highfor everyone to see. Everytime, no matter the age, so-cial status or financial gifts,a person that catches a goodfish smiles. It is universal.

Yes, I have reaped thebenefits of Mother Natureproviding me with bountifulopportunities. Many timesshe has made my day justa little better; a little morecomplete. If I can pass thatgift on to someone else andhelp them cherish the natu-ral world around us, then Iwould be more than happy topay that forward.

DEAR ABBYDear Abby: Is nitpicking a

poor trait to have? I see it asa positive thing as long asmatters are brought up in ahelpful way. If you want ahealthy relationship with theperson you live with, isn’t itbest to tell her what you thinkshould be done and how?

Two examples: My girl-friend likes to take her socksoff when she’s lying on thecouch. She rolls them off herfeet with the opposite foot andthey sometimes end up in thecorner of the couch, but mostof the time on the floor. Also, dishes never get rinsed off, washed or put away on time. The sock thing is gross, andthe dishes end up stinking orthe food gets stuck on them. Also, the dishes sit in thestrainer, not the cupboard.

My girlfriend thinks I gooverboard and bombard herwith these suggestions. I’d liketo know how you and yourreaders feel about nitpick-ing. – Likes Things Neat inLouisville

Dear Likes Things Neat: I find itinteresting that you used theterm “nitpicking.”

Is that what your girlfriendcalls it when you tell her she’sdoing something that bothersyou? Nitpicking encompassesmore than asking someone topick up her socks or not leavethe dishes in the sink or on thecounter. (If she washes them,

shouldn’t YOU put them intothe cupboard?)

There are few things that aneatnik finds more upsettingthan living with someone whois disorganized.

You and your girlfriend ap-pear to have some very basicdifferences.

If you’re planning to makethis romance a lifelong com-mitment, I’m warning both ofyou in advance that you can’tchange another person. Got it?

Dear Abby: I’ve been doingmy mother-in-law’s hair forthe last seven years. I becamevery busy with clients and hadher double-booked in betweenclients because she wasn’ta paying customer. She felt“shuffled around” and decidedto text me, telling me she willgo to another hairdresser.

I’m hurt and don’t under-stand why she wouldn’t com-municate this to me directly sowe could have worked some-thing out. What’s the best wayto handle this? – Hairdresserin California

Dear Hairdresser: Talk withher directly. Tell her youreceived her text and the snubwasn’t intentional. One wouldthink she’d realize you weredoing her a favor by workingher in, but if she can’t under-stand that, then perhaps it’sbetter she see another stylist.Accept it and move on.

Dear Abby: My daughtercalls me (hands-free) whenshe is driving in her car. Wehave lively conversations andI enjoy her calls. However, she is always either runningerrands or on her way to work

when she calls. I can be in themiddle of a sentence when sheannounces, “Oops, Mom, I’vereached my destination. Gottago. Love you!”

Am I wrong to feel she is“fitting” me in? Or should Ijust be happy for the call? – AMom in Connecticut

DearMom: It may seem likeyour daughter is “fitting youin,” but at least she ends theconversations with an expres-sion of love. If her schedule isbusy, her drive time may bethe optimum time for her totalk privately. So be happy –it’s better than never hearingfrom her at all.

CROSSWORD SUDOKU BRIDGE by Phillip Alder

CELEBRITY CIPHER

PUZZLES

Kin Hubbard, a journalist and hu-morist who died in 1930, said, “It’s thegood loser who finally loses out.”

At the bridge table, it’s the goodwinner who finally eliminates hislosers.

There are two common ways ofeliminating losers: Ruff them in theshorter trump hand or discard them onside-suit winners.

In this deal, how should South playin four spades after West leads theheart king?

North had a minimum hand fora raise to two spades, but bridge isa bidder’s game. Over four spades,West wondered if his side had a cheapsave at the five-level, but he knew thespades were breaking badly for hisopponents.

South has rounded-suit losersand seems to have nine top tricks: sixspades, one heart and two diamonds. However, in case the play takes anasty turn or two, declarer should playto ruff losers on the board.

He wins the first trick with hisheart ace, cashes the diamond aceand returns a heart. West, who seeshis partner play high-low to indicatea doubleton, wins and continues withthe heart 10.

But since South has also notedEast’s signal, he discards a club fromthe dummy. East pitches his seconddiamond. West now leads his diamondqueen, East ruffs dummy’s king, anddeclarer overruffs. South then con-cedes a club trick to void the dummyof that suit.

Suppose East wins with his queenand returns a trump. Declarer wins andcrossruffs home, trumping two clubson the board and two diamonds in hishand.

What do you dowith those losers?
