OFFICIAL TEAM PRESENTATION AND MEDIA GUIDEMEN 3

One year after the huge success of the FIVB World Championships played in Japan, the Volleyball family was looking forward to coming back here for the FIVB World Cup 2007.Months before the event I had the feeling that something really exciting was going to happen: the FIVB wants a World Cup even more successful than the 2003 edition, which is still a record breaker event.Japan Volleyball Association and Fuji Television Network Inc. are leading the FIVB team to have the best World Cup ever. All the Japanese fans are ready to give their full support to the best players of the planet, gathered in Japan to go for the gold medals and to get a chance to compete at the Olympic Games next year. Six teams will celebrate on the podiums and they will conquer the first places for Beijing.I never forget the last player, who always sits off the court but is one of the most important: it’s the world of Media. I would like to thank personally all the journalists, from press, radio and TV stations, who will give their support to our event. Two different websites, with the FIVB and the organizers’ special pages, will offer a huge feed of information and materials to every journalist all over the world, with live scoring, statistics, news and free pictures shot by the best Volleyball photographers. This Media Guide, produced by the FIVB in two versions for the Women and Men’s tournaments, is another big support that I’m sure will help all the media to give the best coverage to the World Cup. My special wishes to all the accredited press which will work directly here in Japan: they are going to travel as the teams, from city to city, to live the World Cup as a great sport adventure. I’m sure that they will enjoy every day spent with the Volleyball family, thanks to the hospitality of the Japanese people.13 cities, 15 different venues, 24 teams, 6 entries for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. These numbers are the starting figures of the 2007 World Cup. Now we need soul, touching sport stories, exciting reports.

Hiroshima has recovered from the horrific disaster of the atomic bomb and is now a city of one million people, which prays for world peace. Since before the war, Hiroshima has produced many famous Volleyball players, such as the late setter, Mr. Katsutoshi Nekoda who won a gold medal in the Munich Olympics in 1972. This year, Hiroshima will host the World Cup for the eighth time which follows Tokyo and Osaka. The competition venue, Hiroshima

Arena, filled to capacity for the Asian Games in 1994 and for the Volleyball World Championships in 1998.

[The Sanyo Line / JR] From Hiroshima Station to Kamiya-cho stop by bus or tram, 5 minutes walk.

Toyama is a city surrounded by the native beauty of Japan’s scenic mountains, the Northern Alps, and the Bay of Toyama which is famous for the mirage - the altitude drop between them is 3000m. Toyama has been well known for pharmacy for over 300 years and there are many pharmaceutical laboratories. In Toyama, people are extremely enthusiastic about Volleyball and a great number of international competitions have been staged. The Toyama City Gym was

The Tokyo Metropolitan gymnasium, the competition venue for the opening and final matches of the Site

The Australian Volleyball Federation was founded in 1963, and the sport of Volleyball has rapidly increased in popularity since then, particularly in schools and recreational centers. Volleyball Team Australia Men has been supported by the Australian Institute of Sport since 1990.The team entered the new century with an appearance in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, where they placed 8th, beating Spain in the process and taking a set from World Champions, Italy.Having participated in the Sydney Olympics as the host nation, they set out to qualify for Athens. At the World Olympic Qualification Tournament in Tokyo, Australia achieved this historic goal becoming the Asian Volleyball Confederation’s representative in Athens as the highest ranked Asian team, when it defeated traditional Asian powers Japan, Korea and China for the first time in a single International tournament. At the Athens Olympics, in 2004, Australia eventually finished 11th while taking a set off the USA and World and Olympic Champions Brazil.

OFFICIAL TEAM PRESENTATION AND MEDIA GUIDE MEN38

The Egyptian men’s team has grown up thanks to three different generations. The first being those players who joined the National Team during the period 1990 – 1999, and participated in all Continental and International competitions played by their team, from the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games to the 2006 World Championships in Japan. The second generation is composed by those players born in 1983-1984, who joined the Egyptian National Youth Team and participated in the 2001 Youth Boys World Championship in Egypt, where they got the fourth ranking position. Then they qualified on the continental level and participated in the 2003 Junior Men’s World Championship in Iran. They represent the majority of the Senior team now, starting their victories with the Senior team in the 2005 Mediterranean Games in Spain, where they won the gold medal. Later they qualified to the 2005 World Grand Champions Cup in Japan by winning the African Nations

Spain entered the World League in 1995 (Rafael Pascual was nominated best player). The World Cup 1999 ended with the 6th position and the unquestionable leader inside and outside the court was Rafa Pascual, nominated best player in the World Championship 1998 and best scorer of the World Cup.After the participation in the Olympic Games of Sydney 2000 a new stage opens up for the Senior Men’s National Team. Francisco Hervás is the new Head Coach. The 2002 World League started with a good previous round and reached the 5th position, but paid the effort of the World League in the World Championship. After a fair first round, the Spaniards seemed to run out of fuel in the second stage and couldn’t win a match. In 2003, the renovation of the team continues. For the first time ever, Spain organized the World League Finals, in Madrid, but couldn’t qualify for the semifinals.

Area: 504,030 kmInhabitants: 45,117,000Capital: Madrid

Oscar Novillo, a young coach substituted Francisco Hervás in 2005, a year marked by the semifinals of the European Championships played against Russia in Rome (4th place). The arrival of Andrea Anastasi to the Spanish National Team was a hit for Spain. His work had a goal: the 2007 European Championship in Russia. Eight matches, eight victories. A compact team, minded, well directed by Andrea Anastasi and on the court by the setter Miguel Ángel Falasca. A team that made history and will achieve more success. A team with veteran players: Rafael Pascual, Guillermo Falasca, José Luis Moltó, José Luis Lobato... Then, the youngsters to look out for: Israel Rodríguez, Manuel Sevillano, Javier Subiela, Julián García-Torres, Ibán Pérez, Guillermo Hernán...The World Cup, the quest for the Olympic qualification for Beijin 2008, is the ultimate challenge, with Marcelo Méndez as new coach after that Anastasi has been appointed again as Italy new Head Coach in place of Gian Paolo Montali.

OFFICIAL TEAM PRESENTATION AND MEDIA GUIDE MEN46

The Japanese Men’s squad finished 8th at the 2006 World Championship and was quite satisfied with the result. Everyone admitted that Japan Men’s squad had been rapidly improving since the present head coach, Mr. Tatsuya Ueta, was appointed in 2004 after the disappointment at the OQT.The year 2007 has been an absolutely crucial year for Ueta’s squad due to the World Cup 2007, where Japan’s squad is aiming to qualify to the Olympics at the World Cup with the support of Japan’s Volleyball fans. The squad started with its first training camp in May this year. Ueta named 22 national players for the 2007 World League headed by 37-year old Masaji Ogino. Ogino made his comeback to the international stage in 2005 and played incredible Volleyball in the World Championship in 2006. Most players who competed in the World Championship remained in this year’s squad.

The players for whom head coach Ueta has high hopes this year are Yu Koshikawa and Yusuke Ishijima. Koshikawa, who just turned 23, showed his potential as an outside hitter in 2005; however, last year was a mediocre year for him. Ueta hopes that Koshikawa will be one of the key players. Ishijima, who has been playing in Brazil, is expected to show his improved Volleyball. This year will be the second year for Takahiro Yamamoto, a left-handed spiker, as a member of the national team since his comeback and Ueta sets his hope on Yamamoto as an ace as a spiker.Ueta’s squad is almost mature. Refining individual skills, reducing errors, making offence faster and increasing accuracy in service reception, Japan’s Men’s squad is facing the World Cup 2007 targeting the podium.

Tatsuya Ueta has been the Head Coach of Japan’s Senior National Team since 2004. He was born in Shikoku, the smallest of Japan’s four main islands. He started

playing Volleyball at the age of 12 and developed into an astute middle blocker. He played Volleyball for high school and university teams and gained a reputation as a good player even in his school days. He joined Nippon Steel Blazers in 1987 and played for the national team from 1989 to 1993. Ueta was assistant coach of Nippon Steel Blazers from 1995 to 1998, and head coach of Nippon Steel’s successor, Sakai Blazers, from 1999 to March 2001 before joining the Japan Volleyball Association as coach for the Junior Men’s National Team. He planned to improve his squad step by step and in the 2007 World League he achieved good results by beating high ranked team like Italy and France.

OFFICIAL TEAM PRESENTATION AND MEDIA GUIDE MEN50

The history of the Korean National Men’s Team in world competitions over the last 40 years has been rather inconsistent. Korea has participated in the Olympic Games 8 times since 1964 and its best ranking was a 5th place at the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984. The Korean National Men’s Team won the gold medal three times at the Asian Games : in 1978 in Bangkok, in 2002 in Busan and in 2006 in Doha.In the World Cup, a 5th place in 1991 is the best result ever reached by the Korean National Men’s Team. Korea won four Asian Senior Men’s Volleyball Championship titles in 1989, 1993, 2001 and 2003.

In the 2007 World League, the Korean team won 3 matches against Canada. However, Korea played an exciting game with Brazil, and had good matches with Canada and Finland. Many young players like Moon, who had acquired valuable experience by taking part in international competitions in 2006 and 2007, will become main player for the team, while veteran players lead the team harmoniously.

OFFICIAL TEAM PRESENTATION AND MEDIA GUIDE MEN66

After some disappointing finishes in 2006, the U.S. Men’s Volleyball Team has found great success so far in 2007 and hopes the momentum carries it to a berth at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China. The U.S. Men finished 10th at both the 2006 World League and the 2006 World Championship and saw their FIVB World Ranking drop from fifth to eighth. In the 2007 World League the United States made it to the final round for the first time since 2000. Their first opponent in the final round in Poland was France and the U.S. Men took its third victory over the European team in the first round of the final. Poland also defeated France, which put the United States and Poland into the semi-final. However, the United States lost to Poland in its second match of pool. The United States had done its homework and this time it defeated Poland for the bronze medal.During the World League, outside hitter Reid Priddy led the team in scoring six times while Gabe Gardner, who moved from outside hitter to opposite, led five times. The U.S. Men saw their FIVB World Ranking improve to fifth again after their World League success, but they were not content

to stop there. They followed up with a silver medal at the Pan American Games (losing to Brazil in the final) and a gold medal at the Americas’ Cup. At the Americas’ Cup, Lloy Ball, a three-time Olympian, competed with the team for the first time since the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. The United States hosted the 2007 Norceca Men’s Continental Championship in Anaheim, California knowing that the tournament would qualify the top-two finishers for the World Cup, the U.S. Men did not hold anything back. In the semi-finals against Canada they needed four sets to win and in the final they defeated Puerto Rico in four sets. Ball was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player and Best Setter. Clay Stanley won Best Server and Head Coach Hugh McCutcheon won the inaugural Jim Coleman Award as the tournament’s most outstanding coach.Going into the World Cup, the U.S. Men’s record is 25-5 in 2007.

2003 History

4 years ago2003 Men’s World Cup in JapanA golden Brazil

It’s the 29th November 2003 when the 2002 World Champions of Brazil jump on the highest podium, their first World Cup title. They’ve just finish to mark 11 successive victories, the last over Japan in Yoyogi Stadium. With the South Americans already confirmed as gold medallists after Italy had lost to Serbia and Montenegro earlier in the same day, Bernardo Rezende’s men had to complete the formalities against Japan and did so in great artistic style to silence the 12,000 screaming local fans and walk away with the honour of having won the World League, the South American Championship and the World Cup in the same year.“It is my privilege to be the first ever head coach of Brazil to win this tournament,” Rezende said. “Our players did an excellent job and played superbly right throughout the tournament, despite the long and tough campaign. Maybe this title has slightly less value than the Olympics, but it is still a great honour to win the World Cup and completes a fantastic year for us.”

Final standings (win-loss ratio):

Brazil 11-01. Italy 9-22. Serbia and Montenegro 9-23. USA 8-34. France 7-45. Korea 5-66. Canada 5-67. Venezuela 4-78. Japan 3-89. China 2-910. Tunisia 2-911. Egypt 1-10 12.
