What Is The Mobile Crisis Team?

The Mobile Crisis Team – also known as MCT –consists of two mental health professionalstrained to respond to mental health crisesand other personal and family emergenciesthroughout Howard County. The MCT worksalongside Howard County law enforcementofficers, who provide safety for everyonewhile the MCT helps to resolve the crisis.There is never a charge for this service; it istotally free.

How Does The Mobile Crisis Team Work?

The MCT responds to a Howard County crisiseither at the request of the police or a callfrom an agency, family member or friend concerned for the safety or well being of aloved one or someone in their care. The MCTtravels to the person or family in a crisis andoffers immediate assistance and referral toother Howard County resources as needed.

The MCT understands the difficulty of helpingpeople in trouble who may not even under-stand that they need help. The MCT assistseveryone involved, addressing their concernsand seeking helpful solutions. If there is animminent threat to safety, the MCT can initiatean Emergency Petition – a safety interventionthat instructs the police to transport the per-son at risk to the Howard County GeneralHospital emergency room. Medical personnelthen evaluate the situation and determinethe necessary care.

What Resources Are Available to the MCT?

The MCT uses a broad range of communityresources to address the initial crisis and toensure access to long-term assistance, if

needed, such as:

n Referral or support in obtaining mentalhealth or addiction treatment

n Help in applying for financial assistance or other social services

n Guiding those in need through the necessary referral process to ensure thataftercare services are in place

n Short-term follow-up by the MCT orGrassroots Crisis Counselors

How To Arrange For Crisis Support

Howard County residents can call GrassrootsHotline Counselors 24-hours-a-day, 7-days-a-week to discuss a personal or family crisis.The counselor will discuss the situation, gatherinformation, and determine appropriate inter-ventions and resources, including the MobileCrisis Team.

The MCT will speakdirectly with the callerto respond to the crisislocation. A HowardCounty police officercomes with the MCT toensure safety. Theyarrive quietly, withoutlights or sirens.

People often call 911for immediate assis-tance for a mentalhealth or family emer-gency. When the policearrive, they may requestthe MCT to provide crisis intervention andcounseling.
