INTRODUCTION These papers were given to the Tennessee State Library and Archives by William Henry McRaven, author and collector, of Nashville, Tennessee. The materials in this finding aid measure 14.70 linear feet. There are no restrictions on the materials. Single photocopies of unpublished writings may be made for purposes of scholarly research.

SCOPE AND CONTENT The William Henry McRaven Collection, consisting of about 5,000 items, contains correspondence, photographs, genealogical data, clippings, notes, diaries, and writings of Mr. McRaven. The correspondence includes early letters of members of the Charles, Lanier, and Crutcher families, 1851-1867; later correspondence between Mr. McRaven and members of the Charles, Moore, Pepper, Saxon, Currier, Edlen, Hogin, McMahon, Ruka, and Stubblefield families, 1950-196-; and a large number of letters from Mrs. Evie (Stubblefield) Posey to her nephew, Mr. McRaven, 1930-1941. A large genealogical collection contains histories, photographs, biographical sketches, pictorial albums, genealogical charts, diaries, notes, clippings, and accounts dealing with the following families: Duncan, Elliott, Henderson, McFarlane, McRaven, Morton, Stubblefield, Swanson, Tarkington, and Terrell. Mr. McRaven’s writings include “A Humorous Commentary on the Rubaiyat of Omar Kahyam,” “Shakespeare for Those Who Don’t Like Shakespeare,” and “Tennessee Biographies,” containing biographical sketches of nearly 600 Tennesseans. In addition to the above items there are a number of letters of William H. McRaven, Jr. while in the United States Army during World War II; a diary of Henry McRaven kept during his travels through Mississippi in 1930; ten scrapbooks containing menus, political cartoons by Joe Parrish, comic cartoons such as “Hambone’s Meditations” and “Sunflower Street”; historical articles from the Semi-Weekly Farm News, Dallas , Texas; a pictorial album of a 1,750-mile pipeline built by Anderson Brothers Corporation of Houston, Texas, 1953; and a scrapbook containing records of Mrs. Margaret J. Morton (1828-1911) of Franklin, Tennessee.
