copper tubes and aluminum fins. Extended range units includecoil and piping insulation to protect against condensation in lowtemperature geothermal applications.

Safety controls on each refrigerant circuit include low suc-tion temperature (freezestat), low refrigerant pressure and highpressure switches to lock out compressor operation at extremeconditions. The safety controls can only be reset from the maindisconnect switch to prevent unauthorized reset. Each circuithas high and low side refrigerant service valves for refrigerantcircuit diagnostics and charging.

Thermal Expansion ValveUnits include a Thermal Expansion Valve (TXV) for refriger-

ant metering. The TXV allows the unit to operate at optimumefficiency with fluid temperatures ranging from 25oF to 110oF,and entering air temperatures ranging from 40oF to 90oF. TheTXV precisely meters the exact amount of refrigerant flow throughthe system to meet the load and deliver rated heating and cool-ing capacity.

Fan sectionThe fan section includes a belt-driven fan assembly, mul-

tiple DWDI forward curved fan wheels, solid fan shaft, steel ballbearings, three phase fan motor, adjustable motor sheave, ad-justable motor base, fan pulley and insulated divider panel be-tween the compressor section. Unit sizes 070 through 121 havetwo fan assemblies and unit sizes 180 through 290 have threefan assemblies. The fan motor is always located at the pipingend, but may be relocated to the opposite side in the field .

Unit arrangementOne fan discharge arrangement and two piping arrange-

ments are available. With the return air side defined as the “front”of the unit, the water piping connections may be right-hand (side)or left-hand. All units have a single supply and return water con-nection with a copper FPT type fitting that protrudes through theunit casing for easy connection. The condensate connection isalso a copper FPT type and is located on both sides of the unit. The unused connection is plugged.

The main control panel is located in the center front of theunit. The fan discharge is top front, and the fan motor is alwayslocated at the piping end. Unit sides opposite the control paneland opposite the piping side may be up against walls and stillallow for service and maintenance through the remaining ac-cess panels.

Factory Installed optionsOptional fan motors are available on each unit size to handle

increased CFM and static pressure applications.

Large vertical water source heat pump units are easily lo-cated in small equipment rooms or floor-by-floor installations. They can be applied to all building types where it is advanta-geous to extend the water source heat pump concept to largeror core areas.

Each heat pump is factory assembled and run tested forreliability. Service is accomplished through multiple front, backand side access panels. Access is available to all serviceablecomponents. Each unit ships on a wooden skid and coveredwith plastic to facilitate moving with a fork truck.

Two unique frame sizes make up our 6- through 25-ton prod-uct line - each with a consistent shape for easy layout of theductwork, water piping, condensate piping and electrical con-nections.

Units are constructed of G-60 unpainted galvanized steel. The interiors of all framework and panels are covered with 1/2"thick, 11/2 lb. density coated glass fiber insulation. Multiple 1"filters are supported by factory-mounted brackets for side re-moval in either direction.

Electrical components are located in the lower section, ad-jacent to the compressor(s). Knockouts are provided on bothsides of the unit to facilitate main power and low voltage wiringthrough separate holes. Each unit is rated to accept time delayfuses for branch circuit overcurrent protection. Each unit is listedwith CETL and CE.

The control box is accessible through the compressor sec-tion access panel. The control box houses the major operatingelectrical controls, including the control circuit board(s), trans-former, compressor contactor(s), fan contactor(s) and terminalblock. Each component is accessible for service or replacement.

The Mark IV/AC control system offered with units includes aprinted circuit board that allows for quick-connect wiring to con-trolled components for “clean” wiring. The Mark IV/AC boardhas built-in terminal strip for low voltage wiring connection. See“Controls” section for additional information.

Refrigeration systemSizes 070 through 121 have a single refrigerant circuit. Sizes

180 through 290 have dual independent circuits. Each circuit in-cludes a hermetic compressor, reversing valve, water-to-refrigerant coaxial heat exchanger, electronic expansion valve, airside coil, sightglass and safety controls.

The compressor is located adjacent to the compressor ac-cess panel and isolated from a bottom panel with rubber isola-tors. The reversing valve is energized in the heating mode andwill “fail-safe” to the cooling mode, which is the predominantmode of operation.

Both heat exchanger components incorporate advancedheat transfer technologies. The coaxial heat exhanger has a cop-per inner tube and steel outer tube. The large face area coil has

side to enhance heat transfer capabilities. Extended range unitsinclude coil and piping insulation to protect against condensa-tion in low temperature geothermal applications.

Safety controls include low suction temperature (freezstat)and high pressure switches to lock out compressor operation atextreme conditions. The safety controls can only be reset fromthe main disconnect switch - not from the wall thermostat.

For additional safety, each unit has a 7 psi (48 kPa) low pres-sure switch to protect the compressor from low refrigerant charge. The low setting prevents nuisance trips while providing adequateprotection.

Fan sectionThe fan section includes the fan housing, fan wheel, fan mo-

tor, adjustable sheave, high strength V-belt, and drain pan. Thedrain pan is made of G-60 galvanized steel and is insulated fromthe cabinet. This pan has ample height to allow self-priming ofthe condensate trap. The fan motor is a single speed PSC typewith an adjustable sheave for field adjustment. The motor is iso-lated from the fan housing for minimum vibration transmission. The fan housing has a removable orifice ring on the housing toaccommodate fan wheel removal without disconnecting the unitfrom the ductwork. The fan housing protrudes through the cabi-net to provide adequate material to connect to a flexible duct. The fan discharge can exit from the end or the side of the unitand must be configured at the factory.

Optional factory installed featuresExtended range units are available for applications requir-

ing heating operation at reduced entering conditions. The ex-tended range unit will operate at 25oF (5oC) minimum enteringwater temperature, 40oF (5oC) minimum entering airtemperature.

McQuay 6- to 10-ton horizontal units have a common cabi-net size and common water, condensate, and duct connectionlocations for easier and more efficient installation.

The cabinet is constructed of unpainted, G-60 galvanizedsteel. Large panels provide access to the fan/motor compart-ment and the compressor/control compartment. The interiors ofthe top and side panels and the bottom of the unit are coveredwith 1/2" thick, 11/2 lb. density coated glass fiber insulation. Thefilter is supported by a factory-mounted combination filter rackand return air duct collar, eliminating the need for field-mountedbrackets.

The water and condensate connections protrude throughthe outside of the cabinet. The water connections are FPT typefor easy connection to flexible hoses. The large condensate con-nection provides effective condensate removal.

The electrical components are located in the compressorsection of the unit. Holes are provided on the cabinet to facilitatemain power and low voltage control wiring through separateholes. All wiring connections are made internal to the cabinet formaximum safety. Each unit is rated to accept time delay fusesfor branch circuit and is protected by a resettable circuit breaker.

Two unique control systems are offered for these units - MarkIV/AC and MicroTech 2000. Both controls use a printed circuitboard for quick-connect wiring to the controlled components. The control board receives power from a 50 VA transformer and/or a 75 VA transformer. A terminal strip is supplied for low volt-age control wiring connection. See “Controls” section for addi-tional information.

Refrigeration systemUnits have a dual circuit design and the two circuits operate

independently to enable load shedding when conditions allow. Each circuit employs a random start feature to prevent both com-pressors from energizing simultaneously after an “unoccupied”cycle.

Units contain two of each refrigerant system component, including high efficiency compressors, plate-to-plate heat ex-changers, reversing valves, expansion valves, high/low side re-frigerant service valves, and required safety controls. Large ac-cess panels are provided for easy service access to any of thesecomponents.

The reversing valves are energized in the heating mode andwill “fail-safe” to the cooling mode, which is the predominantmode of operation.

The air-to-refrigerant coil is a dual circuit coil on one slab. Itis split equally along the horizontal axis for maximum efficiency. The fins are lanced and the tubes have finned edges on the in-

lockout due to one of these faults, and the cause of the faultcondition has been alleviated, energizing the O-terminal for10 seconds or more will force the Mark IV board to clear thelockout. A unit power cycle can also be used to clear an au-tomatic lockout if the conditions causing the fault have beenalleviated.

■ Fault Retry To Minimize Nuisance Trips – The Fault Retryfeature helps to minimize nuisance trips of automatic lock-outs caused by high-pressure and/or low-temperature (inheating) faults. This feature clears faults the first two timesthey occur within a 24-hour period and triggers an automaticlockout on the 3rd fault. The retry count is reset to zero every24 hours.

NOTE: Most unit fault conditions are the result of operating theequipment outside the unit specifications.

■ Safety Control — The Mark IV/AC board receives separateinput signals from the refrigerant high pressure switch andthe low suction temperature (freezestat) switch. If a high pres-sure situation occurs while in the heating mode, compressoroperation is suspended. In a low temperature situation, theunit goes into a defrost cycle where the unit is put into cool-ing operation for 60 seconds until the coaxial heat exchangeris free of ice. If a low temperature situation occurs while in thecooling mode, the low temperature switch will cycle unit OFFand ON, as the fault is related to air flow. Each switch gener-ates its own unique LED status and output is available to a“fault” LED at the thermostat if either situation exists.

Mark IV/AC LED Fault Outputs

The Mark IV/AC control system allows for the following op-tional field installed controls and accessories:

■ Boilerless System Kit — Eliminates the need for a boiler inthe system water loop. The boilerless system control boardsenses the entering water temperature to the unit and locksout compressor heating operation if the water temperaturefalls below the adjustable setpoint. Contacts are providedto energize a field supplied electric heater downstream ofthe unit on a call for heating.

■ Motorized Valve — Used for variable pumping applications. The valve is wired in the compressor circuit and the valve ispiped in the return water line from the unit. The valve openswhen the compressor is on and closes when the compres-sor is off. Valve is rated for 300 psig (2070 kPa).

Control Features – Mark IV/AC control systemThe Mark IV/AC control system is a microprocessor-based

control board conveniently located in the unit control box foraccessibility. A 14 pin low voltage terminal strip provides all thenecessary terminals for field connections. LED’s are located infront for quick inspection. The board can be wired for 24 volt ACoutput to the wall thermostat by using terminals R & C. If a DCvoltage output to the thermostat is required, use terminals F & V.This allows the customer a choice of control output voltage toaccommodate controls by others or accessories.

The Mark IV/AC control system has the following operatingfeatures (assumes cycle fan operation-not continuous):

■ Start-up — The unit will not operate until all the inputsand safety controls are checked for normal conditions.

■ Cooling mode — On a call for cooling, the compressor andfan will start 0 to 32 seconds later. When satisfied, the com-pressor and fan shut off immediately.

■ Heating Mode — On a call for heating, the reversing valve isenergized after 60 seconds and the compressor and fan startimmediately. When the load is satisfied, the compressor andfan shut off immediately. The reversing valve is de-energized60 seconds later to eliminate “swish” noise and to allow thecompressor to always start up at equalized pressure.

■ Short Cycle Protection & Random Start — Each time thecompressor stops, a new random compressor start delay timebetween 180 and 212 seconds is generated. This preventscompressor short cycling and prevents units from startingsimultaneously after coming back from an unoccupied cycle.

■ Unoccupied Mode — A simple “grounded” signal, no powersource required, puts the unit into the unoccupied mode fornight setback operation. The fan shuts off and the unit is putunder control from the setback bulb of the thermostat. Theday heating thermostat control and cooling is locked out. Aunique LED status is generated for indication of the unoccu-pied mode. On a call for heating, the fan and the compressorwill start after 60 seconds.

■ Override Mode — A switch on the deluxe thermostat can beactivated during the unoccupied mode to put the unit backinto the occupied mode for two hours for after-hours heatingor cooling.

■ Pump Restart — A signal from the Mark IV/AC board to ourLoop Control Panel will restart the water circulating loop pumpwhen the compressor is energized. The signal can be “daisychained” between 200 units.

■ Load Shed — Again, a simple grounded signal puts the unitinto the load shed mode. The compressor shuts off and thefan will start on a call for heating and cooling. A unique LEDstatus is generated for indication of the load shed mode.

■ Brownout Protection — The Mark IV/AC board measuresthe input voltage and will suspend compressor and fan op-eration if the voltage falls below 80% of the normal line volt-age. A unique LED status is generated and output is avail-able to a “fault” LED at the thermostat.

■ Unit Shutdown — Again, a simple grounded signal puts theunit into the shutdown mode. Compressor andfan operations are suspended. A unique LED statusis generated and an output signal is made available for con-nection to a “fault” LED at the thermostat.

■ Condensate Overflow Protection — The Mark IV/AC boardincorporates a liquid sensor at the top of the drain pan. Sens-ing water, cooling operation is suspended. A unique LED sta-tus is generated and output is available to a “fault” LED at thethermostat. Heating operation is not suspended.

■ Remote Reset of Automatic Lockouts – The Remote Re-set feature provides the means to remotely reset automaticlockouts generated by high-pressure and/or low-temperature(in heating) faults. When the Mark IV board is in automatic

Relay

The Loop Water Controller (LWC) is a stand-alone, factoryprogrammed and tested microprocessor-based controller pro-viding control of the heat rejection/heat addition stages and thewater circulating pumps for control of a water source heat pumpsystem through solid-state output relays. The controller includesa keypad and display to view all status conditions, temperatures, setpoints and alarm conditions. The display is two lines by six-teen columns and supports a supertwist LCD format. The LWCis designed to be used with the Mark IV unit controllers forstandalone operation of the water loop. The LWC does not sup-port serial communications with a higher lever BAS.

The LWC can be used in any of the following applications: atraditional single loop system, a closed-circuit evaporative cooler, boiler, primary pump and standby pump system, or a two-loopsystem with the heat pump loop having a boiler, primary pumpand standby pump separated by a water-to-water heat exchangerto a condenser water loop with an open cooling tower, primary(stage 1) pump and a standby (stage 2) pump. The pumps canbe operated as “auto” or “manual” lead-lag. Pump sequencingallows the standby pump to automatically come on upon failureof the lead pump as indicated by a flow switch.

The LWC can control heating and cooling stages from theheat pump loop supply temperature and from the outdoor airtemperature for reset of the heat addition setpoint. Other tem-peratures that can be monitored include: the heat pump loop

return temperature, entering and leaving tower temperatures, en-tering and leaving boiler temperatures, and the storage tank tem-perature.

Clock schedule outputs are built-in to (1) control the heatpump circulating pump for shutdown at night (can be restarted ifoutdoor air temperature falls below the setpoint) and (2) provideprogrammable time schedules for heat pump unit occupied/un-occupied operation. A maximum of six time clock schedule out-puts are available.

Two LWC models are available. LWC-16 and LWC-24 pro-vide 9 and 17 configurable outputs, respectively, choosing be-tween heat rejection (cooling) stages, heat addition (heating)stages and time clock schedules. Each heating and cooling out-put has individual on and off (differential) setpoint adjustmentcapability. Modulating heating and cooling output signals areavailable to control tower bypass and two-way or three-way boilerheat addition valves.

Monitored system points include visual and audible notifi-cation of low water temperature, high water temperature, or noflow conditions. When an alarm condition occurs, the LWC closescontacts which can be tied to an emergency shutdown signal. Aremote alarm panel is available for alarm notification at a remotelocation. The LWC interfaces with Mark IV/AC controlled heatpump units for a low cost control system. The Mark IV/AC boardcan receive occupied/unoccupied time clock schedule outputsand an emergency shutdown signal due to an alarm condition. The LWC can receive a signal (pump restart) from the Mark IV/AC board to energize and override the main circulating pump (ifit is scheduled off) whenever a compressor operates from a callfor night setback heat or from a call for heating or cooling duringthe two-hour override cycle. Simple “daisy chain” wiring is re-quired between Mark IV/AC board terminals on each water sourceheat pump.

Additional features include a built-in test mode to simulateall control modes, a pre-cool cycle to enable heat rejection ear-lier for undersized boilers, a preheat cycle to enable heat addi-tion earlier for undersized towers, keypad password protection, and holiday scheduling.

The LWC panel is not designed to communicate with a higherlevel BAS.

Applications – SystemsWater source heat pump systems are one of the most effi-

cient, non-ozone depleting systems available for heating andcooling buildings. High-efficiency, self contained units (sizes 7,000btuh to 290,000 btuh) can be placed in virtually any location withina building. Each unit responds only to the heating or coolingload of the individual zone it serves. This results in an excellentcomfort level for occupants, better control of energy use for build-ing owners and low seasonal operating costs. The Air-Condi-tioning Refrigeration Institute (ARI) and the International Stan-dards Organization (ISO) publish standards so that water sourceheat pumps are rated for specific applications. The ARI/ISO loopoptions shown in this catalog are typical water source heat pumploop choices available in today’s market. These systems offerbenefits ranging from low cost installation to the highest energyefficient system available in the market today.

Boiler / Tower Applications: ARI 320 / ISO13256-1

A “Boiler/Tower” application uses a simple two-pipe watercirculating system that adds heat, removes heat or transfers re-jected heat to other units throughout the building. The water tem-perature for heating is generally maintained between 65oF – 70oFand is usually provided by a natural gas or electric boiler locatedin a mechanical room. The condensing water temperature, dur-ing cooling months, is maintained between 85oF and 95oF andrequires the use of a cooling tower to dissipate waste heat. Cool-ing towers can be located on the roof, or inside or adjacent tothe building. This application can be the lowest cost of the loopoptions available.

Note: ASHRAE 90.1 standards require that circulating pumpsover 10 HP will require use of “variable frequency drive” equip-ment and pipe insulation to be used whenever water tempera-tures are below 60 degrees and above 105 degrees. See ASHRAE90.1 Standards for details.

Open Loop Well Water Applications: ARI 325/ ISO 13256-1

“Open Loop” well water systems use ground water to re-move or add heat to the interior water loop. The key benefit of anopen loop system is the constant water temperature, usually 50oFto 60oF, which provides efficient operation at a low first cost. Most commercial designers incorporate a heat exchanger to iso-late the building loop from the well water. Using heat exchangersreduces maintenance issues while still allowing the transfer ofheat from unit to unit as with the “Boiler/Tower System”. A suc-cessful design provides an ample amount of groundwater (ap-proximately 2 GPM per ton) and adequate provisions for dis-charging water back to the aquifer or surface. Open Loop appli-cations are commonly used in coastal areas where soil charac-teristics allow reinjection wells to return the water back to theaquifer. Note that some states have requirements on the depthsof return water reinjection wells. Also, bad water quality can in-crease problems with heat exchanger scaling. Suspended sol-ids can erode the heat exchanger. Strainers can be used to con-tain suspended solids.

Closed Loop Geothermal Applications ARI330/ISO 13256-1

“Vertical Closed Loop” applications are installed by drillingvertical bore holes into the earth and inserting a plastic polyeth-ylene supply / return pipe into the holes. The vertical wells areconnected in parallel reverse return fashion to allow the waterfrom the building to circulate evenly throughout the borefield. The circulating fluid dissipates heat to the ground in a similarmanner as a “tower” and adds heat back to the loop like a boiler. If properly designed, the loop field can maintain the loop tem-peratures necessary to condition the building without the use ofa boiler or a tower. Loop temperatures usually range from 37oFto 95oF in Northern climates. Southern applications can see tem-peratures ranging from 40oF to 100oF. The number of bore holesand their depth should be determined by using commercial soft-ware that is specifically designed for vertical geothermal appli-cations. Typical bore depths of a vertical loop range from 150 to400 feet and generally require about 250 feet of surface area perton of cooling.

Applications – Systems

Horizontal Loop Application

Surface Water Loop Application

A closed loop “Horizontal” geothermal application is similarto a vertical loop application with the exception that the loopsare installed in trenches approximately 5 feet below the groundsurface. The piping may be installed using a “four-pipe” or “six-pipe” design and could require 1,500 to 2,000 square feet ofsurface area per ton of cooling. Loop temperatures for a com-mercial application can range from 35oF to 95oF in Northern cli-mates. Southern climates can see temperatures ranging from40oF to 100oF. Horizontal loops are generally not applied in ur-ban areas because land use and costs can be prohibitive. Newadvances in installation procedures have improved the assem-bly time of horizontal loops while keeping the first cost lowerthan a vertical loop.

Vertical Loop ApplicationA “Surface Water” or “Lake” closed loop system is a geo-

thermal loop that is directly installed in a lake or body of wa-ter that is near the building. In many cases, the body of wateris constructed on the building site to meet drainage or aes-thetic requirements. Surface loops use bundled polyethylenecoils that are connected in same manner as a vertical or hori-zontal loop using a parallel reverse return design. The sizeand the depth of the lake is critical and commercial designservices should be used to certify that a given body of wateris sufficient to withstand the building loads. Loop tempera-tures usually range from 35oF to 90oF and prove to be thebest cooling performer and lowest cost loop option of thethree geothermal loops. Some applications may not be goodcandidates due to public access or debris problems fromflooding.

➀ At ARI flow rate➁ Maximum and minimum values may not be combined. If one value

is at maximum or minimum, the other two conditions may not exceedthe normal condition for standard units. Extended range units maycombine any two maximum conditions, but not more than two, withall other conditions being normal conditions.

EnvironmentThis equipment is designed for indoor installation only. Shel-

tered locations such as attics, garages, etc., generally will notprovide sufficient protection against extremes in temperature and/or humidity, and equipment performance, reliability, and servicelife may be adversely affected.

Power supplyA voltage variation of +10% of nameplate utilization voltage

is acceptable. Three-phase system imbalance shall not exceed2%.

Additional information for initial start-up only

Standard units:Units are designed to start in an ambient of 50oF (10oC), with

entering air at 50oF (10oC), with entering water at 70oF (21oC),with both air and water at the flow rates used in the ARI Stan-dard 320-86 rating test, for initial start-up in winter.

Note: This is not a normal or continuous operatingcondition. It is assumed that such a start-up is for thepurpose of bringing the building space up to occupancytemperature.

Extended range units:Extended range heat pump conditioners are designed to start

in an ambient of 40oF (5oC), with entering air at 40oF (5oC), withentering water at 40oF (5oC), with both air and water at the flowrates used in the ARI Standard 320-86 rating test, for initial start-up in winter.

Note: This is not a normal or continuous operatingcondition. It is assumed that such a start-up is for thepurpose of bringing the building space up to occupancytemperature.
