MCO OER Report – Fall 2019 During fall 2019 semester, nineteen colleges reported usage of Open Educational Resources (OER) and

other no or low costs instructional materials to the Michigan Colleges Online. See listing below. Alpena

Community College and Macomb Community College are new to this report.

Alpena Community College Mid Michigan Community College Bay College Mott Community College Delta College Muskegon Community College Glen Oaks Community College Northwestern Michigan College Grand Rapids Community College Saint Clair County Community College Jackson College Schoolcraft College Kellogg Community College Southwestern Michigan College Kirtland Community College Washtenaw Community College Lansing Community College West Shore Community College Macomb Community College Colleges reported the courses using OER or no cost instructional materials and number of students enrolled in each course. The MCO OER Steering Committee agreed in fall 2016 to determine cost savings for students based on the multiplier of $100 per student. This multiplier is a common method used throughout the nation to reflect the multiple options - such as purchasing used texts, rentals, e-textbooks, etc. - that students may/can use when purchasing a required textbook. Because there may not be a commercial text by which we can compare savings to, this report will show the estimated cost savings based on the $100 per student multiplier for each course.

Total Savings - For all colleges reporting, a total of 347 courses used some form of OER for a combined statewide savings to students of $3,743,600. This is an increase in savings of 15% over fall 2018 semester and an increase in courses of 17% over fall 2018 semester. Since the MCO has been tracking OER usage in the fall of 2016 the total savings reported by colleges is now at $19,616,300.

Usage by discipline – The majority of the open textbooks and other OER used are in general education courses, and this is a commonality across the country as well. At Michigan community colleges, the most prevalent use of OER can be found in biology, history, mathematics, English/writing, psychology and sociology. New courses this semester include criminal justice, engineering and specific programs in the Career/Technical field. This portion of the report reviews, by discipline, what each college is using. Use the following table to help inform and guide faculty at your institution.
