Jazz Workshop Highlights
• Ensembles: Reading and improvisation daily. Styles, grooves, and repertoire will be selected.
• Improvisational theory and techniques: Study of chords, scales, licks, and riffs.
• Master classes: Group classes with specialists for each instru-ment represented at the Workshop.
• Student concert: Ensembles perform selections studied during week of workshop; concert is open to friends, family, and public.

Interested in becoming a better improviser, or just immersing yourself in the art of jazz for a week? Join us in the Jazz Workshop to improve your technical skills and develop your own improvisational style and creativity. Not only will you work with the McNally Smith faculty, active performing musicians and composers, but you’ll learn from top national jazz artists through McNally Smith’s partnership with the annual Twin Cities Jazz Festival (TCJF). The McNally Smith Jazz Workshop have included saxophonist Joshua Redman, The Bad Plus and contemporary pianist Danilo Pérez.The Jazz Workshop is open to performers of these instruments:

Guitar Workshop Highlights
• Record in a studio: Work with others to create and record your music in our studios.
• Reading music for guitar: Study of chords, scales, licks, and riffs.
• Perform with a band: Experience the sound, the lights, and the rush of being on stage with a band.
• Experience a wide variety of guitar music styles: Rock, blues, jazz, and beyond.
• Student concert: Ensembles perform selections studied during week of workshop. Concert is open to friends, family, and public.
You’re on your way, but you’re not quite Hendrix yet. The guitar takes a
lifetime to master but you can make a lot of progress in just one week at
the McNally Smith Guitar Summer Workshop. The workshop is designed
for guitarists of all skill levels with an interest in performing with ensembles,
improving their technique and expanding their skillset on the six-string. The
Guitar Workshop will help you better understand the role of guitar in con-
temporary music and introduce you to a variety of styles of guitar playing.
You’ll strengthen your technique, perform live on stage with a full band and
record your own tracks in the McKern Studio Complex. The guitar workshop
is led by members of the McNally Smith faculty who’ve performed across
the globe with everyone from Merle Haggard to Prince.

GUITAR— WORKSHOP

Whether you make beats, rap, or are just interested in hip-hop culture, you’ll fit in at the Hip-Hop Workshop. For an intense week of practice and study,
get immersed in hip-hop production, history, and performance. Instructors in
the Hip-Hop Workshop include some of the Twin Cities’ finest hip-hop artists
(Toki Wright, Freddy Fresh, Big Quarters, Twinkie Jiggles of Heiruspecs, and
many more). You will also experience hands on instruction in ProTools, DJ
Techniques, utilizing samplers and live sound production. The Workshop will
offer field trips to key Twin Cities hip-hop destinations including Fifth Element
(independent hip-hop retail) and Juxtaposition Arts (youth arts nonprofit).

• Recording sessions: Work on your own tracks under the supervision of experienced hip-hop producers and engineers.
• Spoken word and history classes: Get in-depth with instructional classes where you will work on your own pieces, study hip-hop classics, and learn about the history of hip-hop culture.
• Student concert: Groups perform selections studied during week of workshop. Concert is open to friends, family, and public.
Vocal Workshop Highlights
• Private instruction: Throughout the week vocalists will have the opportunity and experience of one-on-one instruction with professional artists.
• Vocal technique: Topics covered include range and registers, vocal health, breathing, and more.
• Music theory: Multiple sections of music theory will be available to vocalists to expand their under-standing of music fundamentals.
• Ensemble experience: Vocal students will perform and practice with other camp instrumentalists in ensembles.
• Student concert: Groups perform selections studied during week of workshop. Concert is open to friends, family, and public.
After a smashing debut year in 2012, the Vocal Workshop is back for another encore performance! The McNally Smith Vocal Workshop is open to singers
who are interested in performing contemporary music including pop, rock,
R&B, country and more. Led by McNally Smith’s Voice faculty, local musi-
cians and guest artists, you’ll study vocal technique, music theory, stage
presence, ensemble techniques and will receive private vocal instruction.

MIX Workshop Program Highlights • Artist-in-residency performances
and clinics from Twin Cities rising stars, as well as McNally Smith’s award-win-ning faculty.
• Guest presentations from professionals in all areas of the music industry, includ-ing sound engineers, booking agents, advertising music specialists, and many more.
Performance Highlights • Play in a variety of different styles
• Record tracks in a professional studio
Recording Highlights • Tracking songs in a professional studio
• Making and mixing your own tracks
Music Business Highlights • Learn about contracts, promotions,
duplication, band management
• Field Trips to venues, studios and design houses
If you can’t be pinned down, check out the Music Industry eXperience (MIX) Workshop for hands-on advice and education toward making a life in music. You will work directly with McNally Smith faculty from all depart-
ments as well as a professional band-in-residence, and choose from three
focuses: Performance, recording technology, or music business. Each stu-
dent’s experience is unique, and offers valuable experience in the music
industry. You’ll also travel to notable Twin Cities music destinations (previous
Workshops have visited First Avenue [premier nightclub], Burlesque Design,
and KMOJ radio station).
Band-in-ResidenceEach year, the MIX camp plays host to one band-in-residence, a profes-
sional group of young musicians who’ve gone through it all and are making
a life in music. Previous groups have included Howler (named one of NME’s
