McLean Day 101: A Beginner’s Guide to the Festival’s History

There were a number of rules for the popularjousting tournament at McLean Day.

As McLean Day turns101 this year, itpresents a perfectopportunity to

learn the history of the event. It was established in 1915 andwas the first festival of its kindto be held in Fairfax County.

McLean Day 2016 will beheld from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.on Saturday, May 21, atLewinsville Park, 1659 ChainBridge Road. Produced by theMcLean Community Center(MCC), the event is free andopen to the public.

The first “McLean Day” wassponsored by the McLeanSchool and Civic League, withthe support of the McLeanVolunteer Fire Department. Itwas held in an open field ad-jacent to the school. The pur-pose of the event was to raisefunds for various school andcommunity projects. The firstfestival went on for severalweeks, unlike the one-day fes-tival held today.

In the early years, the festi-val was held on the Saturdaypreceding the Democratic Primary in Au-gust, which made it as popular with politi-cal candidates seeking office as it was withthe local residents. Attractions includedcarnival games, a baby show, dancing, per-formances and a lot of homemade refresh-ments. A favored event was the “jousting”tournament. Men, dressed as knights fromthe Middle Ages, rode horses at full gallopwhile attempting to place a lance througha tiny ring. The winner had the privilege ofcrowning his “lady” — “Queen of Love andBeauty.”

While much has changed over the years,McLean Day’s success is still due to the sup-port of the community. Many McLean-

based, civic organizations participate atsome level every year.

After MCC was established in 1975, theevent was held at the Center. In 1989, afterteaming up with many community groups, including the McLean Business and Profes-sional organization (now the GreaterMcLean Chamber of Commerce), the Cen-ter moved McLean Day to its current loca-tion, Lewinsville Park. Today, McLean Dayis as vital, strong and well-loved by the com-munity as it has ever been.

The festival will be held rain or shine. Formore information, contact the Center at703-790-0123, TTY: 711, or visit:www.mcleancenter.org/special-events.
