Forward Migration

Definition Forward migration. The upgrade of software from an older version to a newer version. In an MCL environment, forward migration refers to the: Upgrading of an MCL mobile worker application. Upgrading of the MCL-Collection deployment environment components.

Take an MCL application created using an older version of MCL-Designer, regenerate it using the current version of MCL-Designer, and then run it in the latest MCL-Collection environment. This is MCL forward migration. Think of this as a one-way street.

MCL-Collection is designed to preserve the customer’s investment…. the customer’s capital expenditure investment and the customer’s software development investment. In keeping with this philosophy, MCL is proud to announce a new forward migration wizard to instantly “Migrate” your Symbol DR-DOS terminal MCL applications to run on Symbol’s latest MC3000, MC50, and MC9000 mobile computers with mobile Windows operating systems. “Migrate” does more than just upgrade your application. “Migrate” imports, converts, upgrades and enhances your Symbol DR-DOS MCL applications to run on Symbol’s new generation of mobile computers. PDT3140 to MC3000 Example

Consider the case where you own Symbol PDT3140 DOS terminals. You have a warehouse application with receiving, putaway, picking, and shipping functions. The application, application logic, host interfaces and real-time host interactions work on your PDT3140 exactly as needed. Your application is reliable. Your workforce is productive. Now, you have just acquired some Symbol MC3000 Windows CE mobile computers. You want your PDT3140 application to run on your MC3000 with minimal effort.

If you used MCL-Collection to create your warehouse application. MCL has a seamless forward migration solution for you.

If you used a low-level ‘C’ like language or C++ to create your application

for your PDT3140 terminals, MCL recommends that you use MCL-Collection to create your new MC3000 warehouse application. This will position you to seamlessly migrate to future hardware platforms as they come to market.

You’ll find that you can create your MC3000 application in record time using MCL-Designer, and much faster than using C++ or VB. Also, MCL future-proofs your applications; C++ and VB do not. Not only does MCL-Collection accelerate initial development time, it also minimizes on-going maintenance efforts, and the total cost of application ownership over the entire life of the application.

Whether you used MCL-Collection to create your PDT3140 application, or

are using MCL-Collection for the first time for your MC3000 application, congratulations on your decision. Since MCL provides cross-platform compatibilities and forward migration paths, your software investment will be preserved as Symbol continues to introduce new mobile computers, new capabilities, and new operating systems. Rest assured that MCL will seamlessly blend your various requirements into an efficient working environment.

PDT3140 Application Migration To forward migrate your PDT3140 MCL application into an MC3000 MCL application, select MCL-Designer’s “Import from V2” function. MCL-Designer examines the project to be imported. If the project is a PDT3140 MCL application, MCL-Designer automatically launches the Migrate wizard which steps you through the entire forward migration process. Consider your warehouse application. The migration process not only expedites application deployment on the MC3000. It also minimizes workforce training:

Mobile workers see the warehouse user interface they already know. Mobile workers are immediately productive on the new mobile computers.

Enhance the Look and Feel During application migration, MCL-Designer can enhance your PDT3140 MCL application to take advantage of the MC3000 form factor. For instance, remember that the PDT3140 has an 8x20 display. If MCL-Designer does a straight conversion, the MCL application uses only the top left-hand 8x20 characters of the MC3000 display. However, by enhancing during migration, MCL-Designer creates proportionally larger display screens for you. For example, if you choose the “8x20 Full Screen” Wizard option, the PDT3140 screens are mapped to use the full MC3000 display. MCL-Designer automatically uses appropriate larger fonts and field sizes.

The Migrate Wizard provides several options to automatically enhance the look of your MCL application for the MC3000. For example:

Select from a list of screen aspect ratios. Select different font colors for easy recognition of labels and data entry,

such as red for barcode input data and green for keyboard input data. Add a toolbar to show information like date/time and battery status Add a display background—color, logo, or template.

Once you Migrate your PDT3140 application to run on the MC3000, you can deploy it “as is”, or you can take advantage of having your project in the latest MCL-Designer to further enhance the look and feel of your application. Some examples include:

Change button font types and font colors for easy recognition of buttons, like red Cancel buttons or green OK buttons.

Make your displayed logo a hot key that invokes your service support phone number, email address, or web site.

Re-map keyboard keys for easier use with a gloved hand, user handicap, or right or left handed usage, for example.

Definition

Cross-platform compatibility. Interoperability. Platform independence. Platform neutrality. The ability to move an application back and forth between devices with different operating systems and/or different form factors. For example, using the current version of MCL-Collection, an MCL application developed for a Symbol mobile computer with a Palm operating system will also run on a Symbol mobile computer with a mobile Windows operating system and vice versa. Think of this as a two-way street.

MCL-Collection is designed to create applications with cross-platform compatibility. Applications are easily ported across mobile computers having different form factors and different operating systems. Whether it is a Palm or a mobile Windows operating system such as Pocket PC, Windows CE, Windows CE .NET, or Windows Mobile 2003, MCL-Collection gives complete cross-platform portability of MCL applications with just a few simple clicks of a mouse. To achieve this portability, support for diverse mobile computers is designed into each component of the MCL-Collection. For example, when a new mobile computer is released, a new MCL-Client is created specific to that mobile computer; and, if necessary, a new Designer Device Plug-In is created for MCL-Designer to handle that mobile computer and its unique features. In this way, MCL-Collection allows you to benefit from each mobile computer’s unique capabilities. Porting Assistance

MCL-Designer offers many advanced features to assist you in porting your MCL application to a mobile computer with a different form factor or different capabilities. Consider porting your application between mobile computers with different display dimensions. If some display objects do not fit within the screen boundaries of the ported mobile computer’s display, MCL-Designer’s graphical development environment shows the objects off the screen, but on the drawing canvas. This gives you an opportunity to modify the screen layouts to fit the outlying objects onto the new screen. You can accomplish this in MCL-Designer with a few simple drag and drop actions. Screen objects are very easily moved around without affecting the logic of your application. Now consider porting your application between mobile computers with different capabilities. Your mobile computer is voice capable and your MCL application uses voice recognition. You are now porting your application to a mobile computer that is

not voice capable; therefore the voice recognition will not work on the ported mobile computer. Do not let this deter you from porting your application. MCL remains dedicated to this mission and to this commitment to you. Future-Proofing ApplicationsFuture-Proofing Applications

Today’s mobile computers are orders of magnitude more powerful than their predecessors. Organizations investing in this new generation of mobile computers want to gain the most benefit from their investment and take advantage of the capabilities of these new devices with their superior operating systems, powerful processors, crisp color displays, extensive memory capacities, barcode scanners, radio frequency identification (RFID), imagers, voice capabilities, and high-performance wireless communications. However, as technology advances, it is changing more rapidly than ever before. For instance, the lifecycle of operating systems is becoming shorter all the time. Consequently the concurrent existence of diverse operating systems is proliferating. This is very evident in the mobile computing world. Chart 1 depicts these shortening lifecycles and proliferation of diverse operating systems for mobile computers.

Given the rapid changes in technology, how do companies realize the potential of the new generation of mobile computers yet:

Assure themselves of cross-platform compatibility? Assure themselves of forward migration paths? Future-proof their applications? Protect their investments? Minimize their total cost of application ownership?

The answer is MCL-Collection. MCL is dedicated towards, and optimized for, mobile computers, data capture technologies, diverse operating systems, and cross-platform portability of mobile workforce applications. MCL is designed from the bottom up for platform independence—platform neutrality—for mobile computers. Chart 1 depicts MCL’s cross-platform continuity timeline against the proliferation of diverse mobile computer operating systems. To validate MCL’s ability to future-proof your investments, consider that an MCL application created for DR-DOS can be migrated to run today on a mobile computer running a mobile windows operating system! The same assertion can not be made for an application written in a low-level ‘C’ like language. Total Cost of Application Ownership

Future-proofing your applications has one objective: Reduce your total cost of application ownership.

Think about the cost of application ownership to keep an application current with respect to advances in:

Operating systems as depicted in Chart 1. Wireless communications as depicted in Chart 2. Data capture technologies as depicted in Chart 3.

Revised August 2007 Page 14

Now consider the effort required to keep an application developed in a low-level ‘C’ like language or VB current with regard to these technological advances. Applications developed in a ‘C’ like language or VB must be:

Rewritten for each new operating system. Maintained whenever new system software, such as a driver, is released. Maintained whenever a wireless infrastructure is upgraded. Modified whenever a new technology is introduced, such as voice

capability or RFID. Each time you have to modify your ‘C’ like language, VB, or Java application, your total cost of application ownership increases. This is not the case with MCL. Charts 1, 2 and 3 depict MCL’s timelines for adopting and integrating technological advances into MCL-Collection. The fact that MCL stays current with the latest technologies means you do not have to. MCL does it for you. MCL’s cross-platform compatibility allows you to port your mobile worker application to a mobile computer running a new operating system without the effort of rewriting your application. MCL handles changes to operating systems, system software, and wireless infrastructure. All you need to do is keep the most current version of MCL-Client on your mobile computers. MCL-Client transparently provides the necessary updates to your mobile computing environment.

As shown in Chart 3, MCL is also continually integrating new data capture technologies into MCL-Collection. For example, MCL invested two years in the integration of voice recognition and voice synthesis into MCL-Collection to provide seamless integration of voice control into your mobile worker applications. Enabling your mobile worker applications with voice capability using a ‘C’ like language, VB, or Java, would require a considerable time and money investment in specification, development, test, documentation, and deployment. By contrast, using MCL, voice enabling your mobile worker applications is achieved using a few clicks in a dialogue box associated with your MCL objects/data fields. MCL’s approach has proven itself over the years. MCL remains committed to future-proofing your mobile workforce applications and minimizing your total cost of application ownership.
