GAME RECAP McKinney Christian Mustangs - Varsity Football 2019

Returning to Tyler, Texas for the third time in their ten game season, the McKinney Christian Mustangs faced the Bishop Gorman Crusaders and looked to finish the season with a win.

In the opening Crusader offensive series, Cam Mitton picked off a Bishop Gorman pass and raced 38 yards to the Crusader 46 yard line. A few plays later, Mitton took the ball himself off the right edge from 8 yards away for the Mustangs first points of the game, and an 8-0 lead.

Moments later, Mitton located Blake Rogers behind the Gorman defense for a 29 yard scoring connection and a 16-0 Mustang lead. An interception by Stone Knowles gave MCA the ball back and just 90 seconds later, Mitten connected with Rogers again, this time from 34 yards away for a 22-0 lead.

Hayden Faulkner blocked a Crusader punt which set MCA up deep in Gorman territory, and Mitton found Ford Dossey on a slant pattern for an 8 yard touchdown pass and a 30-0 lead with 1:08 remaining in the first half.

Taking the second half kickoff at their own 49 yard line, the Mustangs marched the 51 yards in a unique way with two starting offensive linemen moving the backfield. First, Will Boese ran for 2 yards up the middle and then Harrison Bailey was inserted as the running back in the wildcat formation and he weaved 28 yards down the right sideline for a first and goal. Aaron Phillips would run it the final 3 yards for a 38-0 Mustang lead.

On the next series, the Crusaders would fumble and Hayden Faulkner would recover on the Gorman 33 yard line. 5 plays later, Ashten Hawthorne skirted to the right side for a 19 yard touchdown and a 44-0

MCA lead.

Late in the third quarter, Ford Dossey would first bobble a punt he was trying to return, and then gathered it in and headed to the left sideline untouched for a 37 yard score, in what would be his last last high school touchdown, and a 50-0 Mustang lead.

The final touches to the game happened when Denzel Poulter made an acrobatic interception and ran 44 yards with a pick six, a 56-0 MCA lead and the final points of the season for both teams. McKinney Christian Mustangs with 44 yard Pick 6.

When it mattered most, McKinney Christian found fun in the game again, and after 5 consecutive tries to get their 5th victory against playoff-level competition each time, the final secured that elusive win.

Finishing 5-5 on the season was a satisfying way to turn around from the disappointing results of 2018. And, there were game that were lost that could and should have been won by the Mustangs. In 2020, they are poised to to return to the playoffs and the excitement of MCA football
