With its sidewalk café ambience, recycled furniture and display cases chock full of fresh, handmade cakes and pastries, Sweet Street (formerly Short Sweet Bakery) has certainly added some flavour to the neighbourhood. Parramatta Council worked with Leanne to bring her to Parramatta and they’ve been a strong supporter of Sweet Street since it opened in January this year.

“The council want good operators,” Beck says. “And they do everything to

encourage new business. Getting your approvals and all that sort of thing is so easy compared to other areas of Sydney. It’s old school business here. You can almost agree on things with a handshake and everything is so honourable.”

Because of the opportunity Leanne was given to set up Sweet Street in a council property, she keeps everything reasonably priced.

“It’s a trade-off,” she says. “Most businesses don’t last here, but I’m

determined to make it work as long as people want what we have to offer.”

Leanne has quickly become somewhat of an ambassador for the region. She sold her home in Glebe and moved here to run the business and describes Parramatta as “the place to be”.

“People are cashed up in the west. They bought here when it was cheaper; they’ve lived here for a while and paid off more of their mortgage.”

Growing up as the only member of a large Italian brood who could cook, a father working as a butcher, and with family orchards in the NSW regional town of Orange, it’s little wonder Leanne ended up in hospitality. Even her science teacher at school told her cooking was the career path she should pursue. And that was exactly what Leanne did, and with a passion few would argue with.

Her career began after writing to Michael Moore, then head chef for Bennelong Restaurant at the Sydney

apple tea cakes which sell for $12 (using fruit from the family orchards).

“I don’t want to be the sort of place that charges $45 for a cake. I want what we sell to be sustainable.”

While she may be a pastry specialist, Leanne has applied those same basic principles to everything. She was seen recently on television’s Masterchef Australia instructing their Masterclass on how to cook her rhubarb trifle. Prior to that, she was a regular on Kerri-Anne Kennerley’s morning show.

Leanne is a regular at many top Sydney restaurants; not to compare or critique the food, but simply to enjoy it.

“I don’t own Louis Vuitton handbags,” says Beck. “But I’ve spent twice the cost of them in some restaurants. I eat, drink and tip well, and I don’t look at the bill. You take that as an experience. You’re enjoying someone’s skill. I still

remember in 2002, I went to Billy Kwong’s restaurant, and had the black bean live scallops. I had a whole dish and then a second one all to myself. So I’d rather that experience than a nice handbag or fancy apartment.”

Leanne is excited that there is now a one chef hat restaurant in Parramatta and says she’ll go often because she doesn’t want them to leave.

“I don’t want other people to think we’re not cultured enough to enjoy something like that. Other restaurants should come here. There are plenty of people who will appreciate it.”

Opera House, in which she offered to work free for a month. Michael ended up rewarding her tenacity with a job. She later worked at Establishment, a trendy eatery in Sydney’s CBD, but admits she was “kicked out of the kitchen for being naughty”. She went on to work with several well known chefs and says that laid the foundation for her future.

“When we were growing up we had premium cuts of meat. I mean, lamb shanks were fed to the dog. My father used to say we may not have this, we may not have that, but we have the best cuts of meat and we have plenty of it.”

As a result, the food at Sweet Street is hearty and wholesome. The halal pies are amazing. All the meat is sourced from a butcher in nearby Guildford and Leanne describes them as “the best she’s ever made.” They also do old fashioned banana, and plum and

The couple plan to stay in the area and share their time between Sydney and a home on the NSW south coast.

After almost eight years in their stunning penthouse apartment, owners David and Pamela Lidbetter are downsizing to a smaller home in the area. The apartment spans from east to west and is on the northern side of the building, while the spectacular views stretch across the harbour towards Mosman and the eastern suburbs on one side, with the Harbour Bridge and Lavender Bay on the other.

“We’ve been blessed with wonderful water views,” David says. “And the exposure to the northern sun has been very pleasant, particularly in the winter. The apartment is also somewhat unique in size, with about 300sqm spread across the apartment plus another 70sqm of garaging and a storeroom.”

David and Pamela purchased the apartment in late 2005 following extensive renovations by the previous owner, and the building itself has just been refurbished. They have since further developed the balcony and installed a state-of-the-art home office.

“The aspect and the environment are both delightful,” David says. “In our opinion, Milsons Point is a very easy place to live. Just across the road is the village atmosphere of Kirribilli and we’ve really enjoyed all the local restaurants. We’re a level walk to Milsons Point station, the ferry is at the bottom of the street and we’re not far from North Sydney Olympic Pool.”
