Q & AWith the number of products available in treated wood and coatings, the most frequently asked questions we get relate to the proper procedures for coating and maintenance. These questions do not have simple answers, but we hope you will find the following information helpful.

Can I paint or stain treated wood?

Yes, you can paint or stain wood that has been treated with copper azole (CCA/CA-C). You can also coat this wood with a water repellent. In fact, we highly recommend it. The best way to tackle these jobs depends on the wood you have, its exposure, and the coating you plan to use.

Many light-colored latex paints can be used successfully, following brush-application of an oil-based primer (The primer should not be applied by a sprayer). Paints, whose manufacturer’s advise against the use of a primer, should not be used. Always follow the manufacturer’s directions and take special care to use a primer to seal end grain where cuts have been made, holes drilled, and any other penetrations occur.

How long must I wait before applying a coating?

PAINT: Do not apply paint until the wood is dry, both on the surface and internally. Otherwise, as the wood dries out, escaping moisture will cause blistering and poor adhesion of the paint. We recommend a six month waiting period before applying paint (this time period may vary depending on regional climate and weather). A 10 to 15% wood moisture content will result in the most successful application of paints.

Once the wood is dry, the procedure for painting treated wood is no different from that for painting untreated wood. We recommend against using paint on deck flooring because frequently used pathways, such as from steps to doors, will become worn.

STAIN: Some stains are heavily pigmented and form a film, just as paint does. The recommendations for those are the same as those for paint, including our advice against using them for the floor of a deck. Most stains, however, are semi-transparent and do not block moisture in the wood from escaping through the stain, allowing the wood to continue to dry.

It is important to know if your stain is oil-based or water-based. Some formulations can be used immediately; others perform

best when the wood is allowed to dry for a while. The best advice is to follow the stain manufacturer’s directions.

WATER REPELLENT: Water repellents do not form a solid film on the wood. They permit internal moisture in the wood to move through them, which allows the wood to continue to dry.

Should I use a water repellent?

To help protect your project against moisture damage, apply an effective brand of water repellent as soon your outdoor wood project is finished. For large projects, apply repellent as sections are completed. Water repellent should be applied every year or two.

My deck is older. How can I improve its appearance?

To revitalize outdoor wood that has a dingy appearance caused by dirt and mildew, use a deck brightener product.

Should I do anything to make sure my warranty is valid?

To validate the warranty, apply an end-cut solution on cut ends, drilled holes, and any penetrations that might occur.

How does treated wood affect stain color?

The natural color of copper azole (CCA/CA-C) is a dark olive green. After application of a cedar-tone stain, the color will become a light to medium cedar brown.

Does treated wood bleed?

Where treated wood comes into contact with untreated wood, some bleeding can occur if the treated wood is not thoroughly dry. To avoid bleeding, we recommend that you make sure treated wood is dry before starting the job. Then apply water repellent promptly, preferably before it rains.

Is it okay to use treated wood for a planter box used for herbs and vegetables meant for human consumption?

Some preservative will leach from Wolmanized wood into soil. While we strongly believe that CA-C treated wood presents no threat to humans or plants, we recommend (not require) a liner be used to prevent any concerns you may have and because some people would rather keep copper out of their planting soil, whether or not it poses a risk.

I have already used joist hangers and fasteners that are not G135 rated on a deck. Is there anything I can do?

Inspect hangers and fasteners on a regular basis. If you see corrosion taking place, replace them as necessary with recommended hangers and fasteners.

BorateBorates are a naturally-occurring

deposit made up of boron and oxygen. Wood treated with Borate

provides warranted protection against rot and termites, including the Formosan termite and it rates low in

environmental impact.

INTENDED USES: Well suited for sill plates, trusses, wall

plates, ceiling joists, floor beams, door frames and other interior applications not subject to direct contact with the ground or where there is normally no

contact with water.

FIRE RETARDANT: FirePRO® brand fire retardant treated wood (FRTW) is lumber and plywood

pressure impregnated with FirePRO Interior Type A High Temperature (HT)

fire retardant chemicals.

FirePRO® contains no phosphates. Independent testing has shown

exceptional fire performance properties without compromising

strength, durability, corrosivity, and hygroscopicity.

CA-C Treated WoodProven after a decade across four continents, CA-C treated wood is ideal for decking, railing and structural deck components, playgrounds and many other backyard projects.

CA-C wood can be painted and stained. It’s more economical than durable grades of redwood and cedar or plastic composites. And it’s made from a renewable resource that’s treated to last for decades, reducing demands on forests.

This wood has been preserved by pressure-treatment with an EPA-registered pesticide, copper azole, to protect it from termite attack and fungal decay. Wood treated with any preservative should be used only where such protection is important.

In the treating process, CA-C penetrates deeply into the wood where it remains for a long time. However, some chemical may migrate from preserved wood into surrounding soil over time and may also be dislodged from the wood surface upon contact with skin. Exposure to CA-C may present certain hazards. Therefore, the following precautions should be taken both when handling the preserved wood and in determining where to use and dispose of it. Many of these precautions also apply to untreated wood and other building materials.

Use Site Precautions• All sawdust and construction debris should be cleaned up and disposed of after construction.

• Do not use treated wood under circumstances where the preservative may become a component of food or animal feed.

• Only treated wood that is visibly clean and free of surface residue should be used where contact is likely.

• Do not use treated wood for construction of those portions of beehives which may come in contact with honey.

• Treated wood should not be used where it may come into direct contact with drinking water.

Handling Precautions• Dispose of treated wood by ordinary trash collection. TREATED WOOD SHOULD NOT BE BURNED in open fires or in stoves, fireplaces or residential boilers.

• Treated wood from commercial or industrial use (e.g., construction sites) may be disposed of by complying with local landfill rules or burned in commercial or industrial incinerators or boilers when done in accordance with state and federal regulations.

• Avoid frequent or prolonged inhalation of sawdust from wood, treated or untreated.

• When sawing, sanding and machining wood, wear a dust mask. Whenever possible, these operations should be performed outdoors.

• When power-sawing and machining, wear goggles to protect eyes from flying particles.

• Wear gloves when working with wood. Use proper techniques when lifting.

• After working with wood, and before eating, drinking, toileting, or using tobacco products, wash exposed skin areas thoroughly.

• Because preservatives or sawdust may accumulate on clothes, they should be laundered before reuse.

• Wash work clothes separately from other household clothing.

• The active ingredients in copper azole are copper, tebuconazole, and propiconazole.

Maintenance Tips• No maintenance is needed to renew resistance to fungi and termites. CA-C wood has a lifetime warranty against these organisms.

• To help protect your project against moisture damage, apply an effective brand of water repellent as soon as your project is finished or, for large projects, as sections are completed.

• Water repellent should be re-applied every year or two.

• To revitalize a dingy appearance caused by dirt, mildew and mold, use deck brightener to clean the wood.

End Cut SolutionFor hem-fir, Douglas fir, western hemlock, and Canadian woods, all cut ends and bore holes should be coated at the time of construction with a suitable wood preservative, such as Wolmanized End Cut Solution, containing a minimum of 1% copper. This measure is required for validation of the warranty, as is proof of purchase of the preservative.

Recommended FastenersThe minimal corrosiveness of CA-C wood is similar to that of traditional treated wood. Hot-dipped galvanized fasteners (meeting ASTM A 153) and connectors (ASTM A 653 Class G185 sheet, or better), are recommended for protection against the effects of moisture often present where treated wood is used. For Permanent Wood Foundations, use 304 or 316 stainless steel. Aluminum should not be used in direct contact with this wood.
