Programming made easy

The large backlit multi-function display guides the operator effortlessly through the structuredprogramming procedure, reducing the need to referto the handbook.

An initial configuration has been pre-programmedinto the MCD53, minimising the number of parametersthat will actually need to be changed for mostusers. The MCD53 has been designed with twolevels of programme complexity to cater for bothnovice and experienced instrument operators.

In the Basic set-up mode, only a few settings arerequired to configure and run the instrument. Theseare the cell type (or cell constant), display (operating)range, set point modes and values, temperaturecompensation and current output range (as required).

In the Advanced set-up mode, all the options andfunctions, which you would normally associate witha high-end, multi-range conductivity controller, togetherwith some new innovative options, can be configured.

On-line HELP facilities consist of a series of texterror messages which are displayed whenprogramming is incorrect, or if a sensor is notreading a sensible value for the instrument set-up.

A further enhancement is multi-level security, whereday to day operator access can be limited to viewingdata and settings only, while allowing full access tothe instrument programmer.

Configuration data can be saved in one of twoindependent back-up locations, which can be usedfor fast reconfiguration, emergency restoration ofsettings, recovery after tampering by unauthorisedoperators, etc.

One Instrument for all Applications

Covering a wide range of conductivity measurement, from ultra pure water (0.055 µS/cm) to solutionconcentration measurements (1,000 mS/cm), theMCD53, can be configured to display the readingsin conductivity, resistivity or ppm. The instrumentcan be set for single range, auto range or remoteranging via external digital inputs.

A universal power supply allows a single connectionto any supply between 80 to 264v AC or DC. An option for low voltage operation between 18-36vAC or DC is also available.

Adjustable cell constant selection from 0.009 to19.99 and temperature compensator selection ofPt100 or Pt1000 allows the instrument to be usedwith almost any conductivity cell. Multilingual textdisplays can be selected with a choice of English,French, Spanish and Italian.

Flexible Control & Alarm Configuration

Up to 4 relay outputs offer on/off control withvariable hysteresis and time delays if required.

New features include USP alarm and pre-trigger,time and pulse proportional relay operation, which can be used in applications where overshoot or undershoot have been a problem, or to directlydrive a diaphragm pump where previously a separatedrive module was necessary.

USP Stage 1 test specifies that all conductivitymeasurements must be made uncompensated for temperature. A table lists the maximum allowedconductivity values at different temperatures. With the instrument configured in the USP mode the table of conductivity against temperature valuesis applied to set point 1 and should the limits be exceeded then the output relay is energised.

USP Pre-Trigger sets relay 2 to energise at a programmable level prior to the Stage 1 test. This will give a warning that the water isapproaching non-compliance.

The fourth relay can also be programmed to energiseon a variety of different functions including errors, instrument status, e.g. off-line or calibrate mode, or if a dose alarm time has been exceeded.

Current Outputs

Up to 2 industry standard, isolated outputs provideretransmission of the measurement as 0/4-20 mA signals and can be configured as conductivity, resistivity or temperature. These are alsoexpandable & can be offset anywhere in the chosen measurement range.

Calibration

Both measurement inputs and current output canbe individually calibrated from the front panel. Forapplications requiring very accurate measurementsit is possible to match the instrument to the calibratedcell constant. Eliminating up to 2% error caused byvariations of the cell constant from its nominal value. An off-line facility allows the instrument to beadjusted without disturbing external processes.

Temperature Compensation

Automatic temperature compensation can be appliedto the measurement using an adjustable linear slopefor changes due to dissolved salts and a fixed curvefor the pure water contribution. For applicationswhere temperature compensation is not required it can be switched out. Alternatively a manualtemperature can be entered if required.
