MCCLIMON TRACK/SOCCER COMPLEX

INTRODUCTION

GOALS & OBJECTIVES

MASTER PLAN DESIGN CONCEPT / RECOMMENDATIONS

The Dan McClimon Memorial Track/Soccer Complex is the home of the Wisconsin track and fi eld and the Men’s and Women’s soccer teams. Named for the former UW men’s track and fi eld and cross country coach Dan McClimon, the complex features a newly resurfaced 400-meter Mar n rubber track. The track, which was the site of the 2012 Big Ten Conference Outdoor Track Championship, surrounds the Olympic size, natural grass soccer pitch.

Track Facility:Excellent for both sprinters and distance runners, the Dan McClimon Memorial Track is the jewel of the Bad-ger track and fi eld facili es. The men’s squad won the program’s 41st Big Ten tle in 2012 when the Badgers hosted the outdoor championship. Nine Big Ten records fell along with 18 facility records during the three-day meet as over 2,000 fans a ended the fi nal day of the meet. The 400-meter, eight-lane track is made of a polyurethane “Mar n 2000” surface. The track surrounds a spacious fi eld events area which doubles as a soccer fi eld. The fi eld features a steeplechase water jump, six jump pits, three discus circles, four shot put throwing circles, two pits each for the high jump and pole vault, and two javelin throwing runways.

Soccer Facility:The Dan McClimon Memorial Soccer Complex is home to both the Men’s and Women’s soccer teams. The complex sits on the shores of Lake Mendota in the Medical District at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The loca on and state-of-the-art training facility located just to the west allow student-athletes to train and play on a beau ful natural grass surface. Stadium upgrades include semi-permanent bleachers along the east side of the fi eld, allowing fans to get close to all the ac on. World Cup style signage surrounding the fi eld allows players and spectators alike to enjoy match day at McClimon. General bleacher sea ng is avail-able with capacity of more than 2,000 fans [5].

When assessing adequate facili es, this soccer venue ranks last in the BIG TEN. Providing upgraded facili es is a priority for the program. Most of the shor all is in the support facili es, spectator sea ng, and ameni- es. The facility will remain a combina on track/soccer venue.

Provide a support and spectator building which house offi ces, upgraded team ameni es, and addi onal concessions, restrooms, and Press Box. A total of approximately 2,000 seats will be provided above the support building.

GOAL CONDITIONSInves gate the feasibility of construc ng separate prac ce and compe on venues for Track & Field and Men’s and Women’s Soccer programs on Lot 60. Separate regula on size soccer fi eld and a 400-meter track would enhance the scheduling capabili es for both teams and also provide spectators with be er compe- on venues.

To maximize the usage of the space, bleacher sea ng would sit between the soccer fi eld and 400-meter track so that restrooms, concessions, and press boxes could be shared.

Currently, Lot 60 provides over 1,300 surface parking spaces and are primarily used by students and staff of the UW Hospitals and Clinics. The 8.5 acres of land has remained surface parking due to the poor bearing capacity of the soils on the land adjacent to University Bay Marsh. Construc ng any signifi cant structures on the site would require extensive founda ons and therefore increase costs.

SITE PLACEMENT SITE PLACEMENTLot 60 has the ability to contain both a 400-meter track as well as a FIFA regula on sized soccer fi eld (Width: 150 feet – 300 feet. Length: 300 feet – 390 feet). However, this confi gura on does not accommodate the necessary width between the fi elds for spectator sea ng.

In order to fi t for athle c venues and the spectator sea ng, the soccer fi eld would need to shi to the east and encroach on Walnut Street.

ATHLETIC SUPPORT SPACESThe inherit site restric on, size and soil quality, limit the ability of Lot 60 to be a poten al loca on for sep-arate soccer and track & fi eld compe on venues. A more immediate solu on is to maintain the exis ng McClimon Complex site, but construct a new stadium on the west side of the track.

The goal of the new stadium would be to provide the best possible sightlines for both sports and also bring the spectators as close to the soccer fi eld has possible. Addi onally, the new stadium would provide the necessary restrooms, concessions, cket offi ce, press box, and game-day locker rooms for compe on.

The 400-meter track prevents the spectator from being directly adjacent to the edge of the soccer fi eld, so in order for soccer fans to have appropriate viewing angles they will need to be elevated. This extra eleva- on coordina on works with the sloped hill to the west and creates a useable space for team locker rooms

and equipment storage.

With a higher grade-plane to the west, direct spectator access onto the main concourse of the sea ng is possible. Beneath the spectator sea ng, restrooms, cket offi ces, and concessions can be incorporated.

Sea ng for 1,000 spectators would cap the support spaces.
