PRESIDENT’S REPORT – Chris Defina

Well, writing this means it’s the end to another cricket season under the sun at the Monbulk Cricket Club. Once again, I was very appreciative of being entitled with the role of Club President. As a Club we grew once again. It’s a little surreal to look to the future of this Club and think where it could realistically be in the short, medium and long term. It’s exciting, however it hinges on the proviso we keep doing the right things. Overall the season was one which could best be described as up and down. From the bottom age groups up, Milo continued on its way and once again we produced another quality product with more than 75 kids enjoying the program. A very big thank you to Damien Howard for all of his efforts – we are all (especially me) going to miss you enormously and are very excited for you and your new family with the move to Fish Creek. Good Luck mate! Another massive and special thank you to all of the coaches and Friday night helpers. Our junior program grew again, with a total of seven junior teams, consisting of 85 players. A massive thank you to Mr. Steve Utting for his sensational coordination of our junior program. So many areas to cover off and your hands-on contribution in making sure everything is going to plan produced another great season. Thank you to all of the coaches, team managers and parents for all their support. Congratulations to all teams and well done to the three (out of four) competitive teams that made finals. For our seniors, it is not unreasonable to say it was a season of, “what ifs”. Unfortunately, sometimes that’s the way it goes. We can’t afford to accept the outcomes that went against us; we need to use them as the motivation we need to keep improving. I really love the fact that I have already had messages from players reflecting and suggesting ways to improve next year. I love the passion! Well done to the 4th XI on making finals – this was a fantastic effort by group under the guidance of Bobby Badgery. Bad luck on the semi-final result, however you should all be very proud of your efforts. You all did a great job! To the 3rd XI and Foggy, well done boys – just missing out on finals after moving up a division is a very good effort. I know this group was disappointed not to sneak in and as Foggy rightly said at the end of the season, we missed out on too many games we needed to win. Keep doing the work boys as you are all more than good enough! We move onto the 2nd XI… This group grew significantly and played some very good cricket at periods throughout the season. The main thing that needs to develop with these boys is the ability to play a full day of 80 over cricket. The rest is heading in the right direction and big Simmo did a very good job in leading these boys. It’s far from an easy job captaining the 2ndXI, so well done Sim! As for the 1st XI, sadly we dropped the games we needed to win and it cost us in the end. Dropping the first two games by a total of 10 runs is still haunting me and to then drop the Knox Gardens game in November due to having 10 blokes unavailable from the top two teams makes it tough. Cossie and every player in our 1st XI could have thrown their toys out of the cot and given up, however to their credit and in true Monbulk style they kept fighting and only just missed out on finals, taking the season all the way to the second last game. Heading into Round 11, they still had a chance to finish as high as third… Sadly though, it was not to be. We have all seen how quickly you can fall from grace and be relegated, so well done to the boys for never giving up. To Cossie, your own individual performance of nearly 500 runs and six scores over 50 throughout the season is a true leader’s performance – well done, no one can question your leadership. A great individual year that deserves FTGDCA team of the year honours… Socially, we were very hit and miss, and this is an area where we can improve. Our Cocktail Party was a fun night and Azza Powell’s Trivia Night was huge yet again – well done Azza and thank you! The Christmas Party was the worst attended in five years, mainly due to the heat, and was a disappointing way to lead into Christmas. Our last function of the year, the Ladies Afternoon, Past Players Reunion and Players’ Night, worked on some levels and showed the makings of a good function. Like everything we do, we are only as good as the support we get from the members. Thank you Cliffy, Al Smith, Jimbo, Annie, Glenny – your continued help is amazing, makes a massive difference and takes a heap of pressure off the committee… Thank you, thank you, thank you! A massive thank you also to Mark Fenby for belting out tunes at our functions every time we asked him – it’s awesome Mark, loved by all and greatly appreciated!

To our main community partners, Bendigo Bank, Nexus Travel & Cruise, Traditional Stairs, All About Express, Simultech Australia, Chilli Obsesion, CSG and MRE, thank you very much for your valued contribution to the Monbulk Cricket Club – we sincerely appreciate your generosity. To our Vice President, Daniel Clark, congratulations to you and the outcomes you generated in this space. Another thank you must go to Tye Marchetti who was able to embrace our club rewards program and entice many new sponsors to the club which made a massive difference to our Club. Thanks Tye and congratulations on your year on field. Finally to the Club’s committee – thank you to each and every one of you for firstly the sacrifice you made in joining the committee, and secondly for your contribution throughout the season. As a committee, I don’t think we totally clicked; especially when it came to meeting attendance. However we were still able to achieve some good results and the communication via email was second-to-none. Thank you to you and your families for all of your efforts and dedication. For the Club to keep growing, we need to get all aspects of our committee right and I think this will be easy to achieve heading into next season. Congratulations to everyone who have received awards and recognition this year. Your individual performances have been outstanding and your achievements are something you definitely should be proud of. Be proud of what you have been able to gain for your Club. In closing, I can’t play cricket and coach my boy, let alone be President of our Club without the support of my wife and kids. I want to thank them all very much. Their commitment to the Club from behind the scenes is amazing and very much appreciated. There is never any complaining (when there probably should be) and I know I am very lucky to have this support. So that’s it! I wish you all well for the winter months – stay safe, look after yourself and look after your families. Give them all a hug and tell them you love them as much as you can. I am sure the new committee will work hard in the offseason, in preparation for a massive 2016/2017 campaign. This Club is going places, if we want it to… Go Monny! Chris ‘Funky’ Defina

Monbulk 1st X1 – 2015 / 2016 – Captains Report

Season 2015/16 was full of expectation from many of us, who had been working hard off field following a long winter trying to get the right guys in to the 1st XI. These efforts were to ensure we were very competitive on field. After welcoming back to the club former players Brodie Emmett and Chris Coen, I was quietly confident we could make finals. Round 1 saw us up against last year's runners up, EPCC. We bowled first and took regular wickets to have them all out for 130. Cobsy picked up 3 wickets in his return for the club. We lost a couple early wickets before Brodie and Frase put on a good partnership to have us in the box seat. Brodie was dismissed for a good 40 and we inched closer to the target. With 8 to get and 3 wickets in hand it was looking good, but a few round 1 nerves saw us lose 3/2 to be all out for 125, with Frase stranded on 50 not out. Round 2 we were up against last year's premiers JP. Again we bowled first and had them all out for 160, with Azza and Cobbsy both picking up 3. With over 100 overs to reach the target we took our time, but unfortunately we never got any momentum and regular wickets fell. For the second game in a row we fell an agonising 5 runs short. Again Frase top scored with 36. Round 3 saw the introduction of T20 games for points and we were up against Belgrave. We batted first and finished our 20 overs 4/124. In reply Belgrave looked to be in control for most of the chase but through some good bowling we managed to get it down to the wire. They ended up needing 3 of the last ball to win and the bloke had a swing and a miss, so we ended up with our first win for the year. Round 4 we played Knoxfield. Batting first on a slow ground we got to 196 of 76 overs, with Creedy top scoring with a terrific 61. The next week we came to play, bowled tight lines and fielded brilliantly to have them all out for 177 off 77 overs. It was by far our best performance of the year. Frase toiled away from one end for 25 overs and picked up 4/62, with good assistance from Macca straight from the Irish - 2/31 off 20. Round 5 was a tough game, with 5 out from the previous week. Knox Gardens took full advantage, rolling us for 168 after being 1/108. In reply they cruised home only 3 wickets down in a disappointing day for us. Round 6 we played Mountain Gate and batting first we made a good 235, with Brodie top scoring with 55, and contributions from Frase and Bill (both 32). Brian finished things off with an entertaining 44 not out. It was game on in their chase, but they fell short on 210 with Marto the pick of the bowlers, with a match winning 4/46 off 18. He was well supported by Macca who had a little extra spring in his step that day, with 3/29. Round 7 against The Basin was played in extreme heat. With most comps called off, we thought we'd buck the trend and play. They batted first and put a imposing 210 on the board which proved to be too many for us, all out for 156. Cobbsy batted nicely in the middle for 51. Round 8 was another T20, this time against JP. We batted first and were in all sorts of trouble at 4/22, until Billy came out and played his best knock for the club with a match winning 83 not out in our total of 5/136. For me, it was the best innings of the year. In reply, Duncan bowled with some good pace to pick up a couple early wickets and set us up. At the completion of their 20, they were 8/120. Cobbsy chipped in with another 3. Round 9 we played Upwey, where they batted well and put 251 on the board. Macca and Cobbsy took 3 each. It was always going to be a tough chase and we never fired a shot, to be all out for a disappointing 106. Round 10 we played EPCC in a must win game to keep our finals hopes alive. We batted first and battled our way to a respectable 181 off our 80, on a slow ground. In reply they were tracking ok at no wicket for 45, but once we got our first, we put the screws on and never gave them a sniff, rolling them for 135 off 71 overs. Marto was brilliant with 4/19 off 21 and he was well supported by Frase and Macca.

Round 11 was a big game against Belgrave. We batted first on a really quick ground and finished with 270 - which was about par. In reply a few things didn't go our way - mainly having a bloke caught behind on 40 only for him to go on and make 149 not out. They passed us 4 down with 6 overs to spare. Macca and Frase bowled well without luck, with this loss putting us out of the finals race for another year. Round 12 we played FTG. We batted well for 5/197 off our 40, with Cobbsy finishing on 50 not out and Bill making 38. In reply we bowled too many bad balls and they took advantage to get over the line with 10 balls to spare. We ended up finishing 8th, with 5 wins. It was such an even competition that 6 wins made the 4, and 4 wins got relegated. So overall we slightly improved again this season, but I still think we let a couple of games slip which had we won, would have seen us playing finals. With the team we had I thought finals was a pass mark and we fell short of that. We showed at times throughout the year, and in patches throughout games, that we can match it with any team in the comp. At our best we could beat anyone, which showed against Knoxfield who we beat. They were the standout team all year and eventually won the premiership, but we only produced our best on too few occasions. I'd like to once again thank Smithy for being my team manager/scorer. He did a fantastic job and we all appreciate what he does week in week out. Thanks to the players for their support. Once again we went through the year with no dramas as a playing group and we all really enjoyed playing together every Saturday, and shared plenty of laughs along the way. And finally a massive thanks to Funky for all his support. He did anything I asked and more. He always tried to help me out in anyway he could and I've got a huge amount of respect for him and everything he does for the club. So that's it for another season. Enjoy the off season and I hope you all come back next season hungrier to take the next step. Cheers Shane

Monbulk 2nd X1 – 2015 / 2016 – Captains Report

This year for the Monbulk 2nd X1 was all about development of the younger players that are not long out of juniors and getting them ready for regular senior cricket. Players like Jim Fenby, Aaron Gillard, Tam Noonan, Hamish Emmett, Aussie Richardson, Daniel Cleary and Trav Wills all had important parts to play this year and were the players we identified as the next group of players making the transition to playing regular 2nd X1 senior cricket in the years to come. It was also about playing a standard of cricket that’s a lot more competitive and can stand up for a longer period of time over a game and over the season. Unfortunately, we had a tough start to the season with the opening game against a strong and experienced Eildon Park outfit, which didn’t see us start to the season the way we would like as the boys experienced a heavy loss. What I was really pleased with was the way we responded the following week and backed it up with a great win against Jonson Park. This was what I was hoping for and that they would trust the process and the results would come. Our next, and arguably our best win for the year came in the last game before Xmas, a one- dayer against the very highly rated Basin XI. The game was played in oppressive heat and I wasn’t sure how we would even get through the day. This was also the day Monbulk saw Aaron Gillard come of age and play his best innings for the Monbulk 2nd XI and also score his first half century in senior cricket. Aaron, along with Bluey Fraser set it up for us to hold on for a very hard fought win. After Christmas, the New Year started very well for us with a very convincing win over Upwey at Upwey in Round 2 with Azza Gillard again featuring in the runs. While the remainder of games for the year didn’t register a win for us, what it did show was a great improvement in how competitive we were in all aspects of the game. On many occasions we batted our allotted overs and scored 200 or very close to on 5 occasions, This is a very pleasing stat given it is where the 2nd X1 has struggled for many years previously, it’s even more impressive when you think about the age of the team for most of the year. The younger guys were ably supported all year by the more experienced guys such as Bluey, Warney, Mattty Winzenreid and Nealo who all contributed well over the year and huge thanks goes out to them all for their support. A special mention to Beau Newman as well, while he had a slow start to the season, after Christmas he really did become our best bowler and kept us in the contest on many occasions with his very disciplined spells of bowling. Overall, the future looks very bright for the Monbulk Cricket Club, with the quality of the guys coming through. But make no mistake; they will need to continue to work harder each year along with more senior players continuing to improve for our 2nd X1 to be more successful. Well done on a great year guys, remembering sometimes it isn’t all about wins and losses, as long as you can look back and say you have improved on the year before and want to continue to improve. Simmo

Aaron ‘Gilly’ Gillard (left) won the 2’s batting average and made a half century v The Basin (middle).

Craig ‘ Warney’ Broekhof (right) won the 2’s bowling and MVP award.

Monbulk 3rd X1 – 2015 / 2016 – Captains Report

I would like to firstly thank all the players that played alongside me in the 3rd XI. You guys truly made my job an enjoyment every week. When our team was on our game, we matched it with the best sides in our division.

Constant changes to the 1st and 2nd XI’s allowed the 3rd XI to blood another group of juniors this season.  After playing a handful games with these young men, I'm confident that our Club has a strong group of players coming through.

I'd also like to thank Daniel Clark on his season. During pre-season I asked Daniel to come play with us and be my vice captain. Once doing so, he became an integral part of our side. Not only was it great to play alongside my best mate, he offered great advice on and off the field.

Although not making finals (by just 6 points) this season, we were still in with a chance going into the last game. During the season we can look back on small moments where if we had a little bit better execution, I promise you we would have snuck into the Top 4. If we improve in these areas we will play finals for many years to come.

Most of my highlights for the season came from our Round 7 match against Knoxfield. In a must win game, we saw Evan Binding take his first career double hat-trick to dismiss Knoxfield in the first innings. In the same game we saw Liam Mackin make his first 100.

With solid contributions from all of the juniors who played with us this season, we are looking to be in an even better place for next season and I’m strongly looking forward to the challenges that are in front of us. With the lessons learnt from this I hope that we can take that into August's pre-season and strive to improve as cricketers, and as teammates.

Until next year,

Fogs Signing off (Tim Fogarty)

Monbulk 4th X1 – 2015 / 2016 – Captains Report

Monbulks 4th Eleven made the finals this year on the back of the effort of a number of people. The on field efforts of the players all of whom contributed well at different times. The captaincy of Bob, with the assistance of Willo, gave the team great example and a reliable strategy. Consistent contributions with the bat and in the field by Tye Marchetti also helped set a good example for the younger players coming through. Our bowling this year touched both ends of the performance spectrum. Darcy Myring, Andy Firth, Jack Heard, Ken Beecroft and Nick Boundy bowled some very good spells and all showed encouraging signs for next season. Shannon Tibballs probably the best of our bowlers was a consistent wicket taker. In particular Kens' performance in the final and Michael Hills' accuracy were of note. We unfortunately lacked a more experienced bowler to steady things when needed. Our batting was in the main approached with a determined attitude. Bob Badgery opened with TJ Utting for the first half of the year. Bob with a positive approach that always got us off to a good start in nearly every game. A lot of great innings, the best being a magnificent century against St Johns. He was by far our best and most consistent batsman as the statistics show. TJ batted well for us, technically correct and put a high price on his wicket. Eventuating to a promotion to the thirds. Tom Badgery batted at three, a big ask for a fourteen year old but certainly up to the task. Another player who never threw his wicket away. Having to face the best of the opposition bowling had a top score of 48. His great attitude will go a long way to allowing him fill his potential. Winning the Jason Fraser trophy was a just reward, certainly for his performance in both junior and senior. His up beat attitude and concentration all day when fielding cannot go without commendation. He was also vice captain of the under sixteens and assistant coach of the under twelves. The trophy just reward for his season’s efforts. We had many noteworthy batting performances which all contributed significantly to us reaching the finals. Chris Rak against Rowville when things were looking very shaky got us over the line, under pressure, he showed his best. Jack Heard in the same game likewise. Tibs as with his bowling was a regular contributor with his batting - some excellent knocks. Clayton Spooners' innings against Mountain Gate helped to get us to the finals. Emulating that innings is his challenge. In a very important game for us -just to mention the Captain again - a couple of valuable wickets. His method the key. The fielding leadership was spread around but led, in the main, by Willo who impressed the importance of concentration even if things weren't going our way. This was our biggest positive this year. I don't think we ever dropped our heads. Individually Willo was Willo with the bat, a big hitter who smashed the opposition into submission. Just as the opposition thought they had kept us to a reasonable total three overs with Willo at the crease changed that. Not to go unnoticed was his catching and throwing, one of our best fielders. We had many junior players complement our team, again showing the skills and attitude that is a credit to the people that run our junior development. Tam, Rab, Brayden, Daniel, Michael, Aussie and Josh Spencer all fitted in to the team well and contributed. The blight on this year was the amount of extras and our inability to bowl defensively. A proven method of getting the right line and length before you try and increase your pace, swing the ball, cut the ball seemed to be ignored and we are doomed for failure unless we at least try to improve in this area. I suppose this is our challenge As we acknowledge the contributions of people involved with the fourths this year we shouldn't single out anyone in particular so I will. Filthy Hoisen. Injury stopped him from contributing on the field this year but he was willing to take up the scoring /sledging position and he filled both admirably. It can’t be understated the importance his role was to the team. Scoring, I think was a small part of his contribution to the team. His stability and positive influence was so important and we all appreciate your contribution.

We all look forward to next year, this one was most enjoyable, and I think I speak for all the fourth eleven when I say thank you to our extremely hard working committee and every other member of our club so well led by Chris Defina. 4th Eleven spokesman, Jabba (Bruce Jamonts)

Junior Co-ordinators Report 2015 / 2016 Well another very successful season of junior cricket has drawn to a close at Monbulk. Over 165 local kids played cricket at Monbulk this season. We again had 7 junior teams, involving about 85 kids and about the same amount participated in our successful Milo in2Cricket program. I love our cricket club and am very proud of our junior program. Our program is very well respected in the community and the association and I have no doubt we do it as well or better than most clubs – in regards to participation, the culture of sportsmanship, and producing kids that want to continue playing cricket in our seniors. I spent two weeks over the xmas break (U14 rep carnival) talking to many junior co-ordinators, coaches and parents from other clubs all over Melbourne and others within our association throughout the season – these discussions reinforced the strength of our program and what we are doing is working. The strength of our junior club is due almost entirely to the quality of the people managing our teams. I would like to thank all of the coaches, team managers, scorers and other helpers (too many to mention here) on behalf of all parents for helping their kids participate and enjoy playing cricket. All of our coaches did a magnificent job in skill development at each age group as well as teaching and modelling sportsmanship and playing in the ‘Spirit of Cricket’. A huge thanks and well done to: Tom Watson & Brian Martin (U16’s), Rick Lamers (U14’s), Duncan Maher (U12 Gold) assisted by Thomas Badgery, Geoff Field (U12 Maroon), Aaron Gillard & Chris Defina (U11’s), Duane Kay & Rohan Piesley (U10 Maroon) & Damian Smethurst (U10 Gold). Thanks also to Chris Defina, Bronwyn Badgery, Daniel Clark and all of the senior club for supporting, encouraging and mentoring our juniors throughout the season. This occurred at junior trainings, senior trainings, randomly in the nets, in the Logcabin and especially during Saturday afternoon senior games for the many juniors that played seniors throughout the season. I really appreciate this and love this about our club. Thanks and well done to Damian Howard and team for their amazing work with our Milo program. Last season our U17’s wore the colored maroon and gold shirt and it was an aim of mine to see all of our juniors in this shirt. Many thanks to Rick Lamers (& Traditional Stairs) for sponsoring the shirts and making this a reality this season. I reckon they looked awesome (as seen in a photo on a previous page) and I know the kids loved them as did the local paper who continually included our junior photos. A huge thanks must also go to ‘Nexus Travel & Cruise’ in Monbulk for their fantastic support of our ‘Stewart Lever Junior Development Program’ which included the indoor development clinic in the September school holidays. Make sure you visit Nexus for all of your travel needs and thank them for their support. On the field, the weather was the greatest obstacle this season, especially for our Friday night teams with many nights abandoned due to heat and rain. Our U16’s, U14’s & U12 Gold all made the finals, which you can read about in the junior report. This is obviously an indication of a successful season. U12 Maroon didn’t actually win a game, but also had a successful season in terms of improvement and were a big part of Gold’s semi final. They were very unlucky to not win a game, losing narrowly a few times and were set to win at least two other games when the weather again interrupted the match. The U11’s played their first season of hard ball cricket and improved dramatically over the season. Our 18 new U10’s really enjoyed their first season of cricket playing in the U10 Big Bash competition. Next season we are hoping (we will) have two U16 teams, which is great for the future of our club especially considering we didn’t have one top age team two seasons ago. I look forward to many of these boys playing senior cricket, as some did this season. I also hope to play some senior cricket myself with these boys next season. We will also welcome some U10’s into the junior ranks from our Milo program. Thanks again to all of the families involved in the Monbulk junior cricket club for their support and for making it an enjoyable place to be. See you all next season. Steve Utting

Milo in2Cricket 2015 / 2016

Monbulk Milo has had another very successful season with 75 registered participants but also a bunch of pre Kinder kids joining in the program. Again we can be proud of our programs girl participation being a third of our kids. The program not only underpins the MCC juniors but the Friday night program is a community event providing the opportunity for kids to be active, enjoy the outdoors and for parents to socialise and relax at the end of the week. With 3 groups and the U10’s in the middle of the ground, Friday night showcases the MCC as a vibrant, welcoming club. The program only runs with the selfless support of our volunteers. In particularly our coaches: John Hughes, and Dave Daly. But also to all the parents who helped the coaches with groups. A special thankyou to Cathy Piesley who coordinate the cooking of the weekly BBQ and was there each week to help out and to make sure all went smoothly. Her contribution was invaluable. To all our parents who helped with the BBQ. Again it adds to our program to provide a meal on a Friday night. Also a big thanks to Jo Burton (BBQ) and Tracy Borkowski who helped with our weekly meat raffle. Thanks to Cliff Cleary and Al Smith for running the bar. It’s a huge commitment. And also to the MCC lads who filled in when asked. I like to acknowledge and thank our sponsors. Tim’s Pies and Bakery and Monbulk Family Butches. Thankyou for your support – it means a lot to our club. The feedback from parents, other teams has been extremely positive and I think as a club we can be proud of our standing within our community. Moving forward this can only be positive for our club. Thanks Damian Howard, Milo in2cricket co-ordinator
