This week we will be concentrating on the design principal of white space. White space is the negative space between and around the elements in a design. It’s a concept that allows you to create a level of sophistication and elegance to your project. It provides a clean and simple look and also allows you to create a design with a modern feel. When used properly, white space can be a very effective design tool. With that being said, let’s talk about what purposes white space has in design. 1. READIBILITY: White space between lines of texts makes your design legible. When you are creating a layout or a project that contains journaling you want to keep in mind the white space between the letters, words and sentences. By adjusting the kerning, leading and tracking, the more comprehensible your journaling will be. whitespace (n.) - the negative space between and around the elements in a design - MODULE 2

Welcome to week two of MODCARDS!

By adjusting the kerning, leading and tracking, the more comprehensible your

journaling will be.

2. UNITY:

The definition of unity is the state of being united as a whole or in harmony as a whole. When using white space in your design

typically, the amount of elements added to a design is minimal. This allows you portray a more sense of unity to your project. The more white space, the less amount of elements…the less amount of elements, the more unity in your design.

3. TONE:

White space allows you to create a tone or a mood to your design. It gives your design a more modern and classy feel. If your

project has a clean and sophisticated look to it, it creates an “expensive” feel. example:

4. EMPHASIS & FOCUS:

The more white space your design has, the less cluttered your project is. Having minimal elements on your layout or project allows

your audience to easily focus on what you are trying to portray. The main goal in any design is to “sell” something. Whether it is an advertisement for a product or a scrapbooking layout, white space allows you focus in on and emphasize exactly what you are trying to “sell.” example:
