1970s.• 1520 Sedgwick Avenue is the starting point for Hip-Hop

and rap music worldwide. It's where DJ Kool Herc presided over parties in the basement community room.

• Kool DJ Herc migrated to the United States from Kingston, Jamaica and settled in the West Bronx of New York.

• Kool DJ Herc, who actually coined the term “hip hop,” began to realize that this was the beginning of a new genre.

• DJs began to incorporate little rhymes such as “throw your hands in the air and raise ‘em like you just don’t care.”

Graffiti & Art• Graffiti is any type of

public markings that may appear in the forms of simple written words to elaborate wall paintings.

• Graffiti has existed since ancient times, with examples dating back to Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire.

• Spray paint, and marker pens have become the most commonly used graffiti materials.

• Sometimes graffiti expresses social and political messages and a whole genre of artistic expression.

• To others it is merely vandalism.

• Graffiti can be used as a gang signal to mark territory or to serve as an indicator or "tag" for gang-related activity.

Da Dj• Person who selects and plays recorded music for an audience.

• Disc jockeys select and play music using multiple turntables.

• Backs up one or more MCs, and they may also do turntable scratching to create percussive sounds.

• Transfers the MCs music to the public, similar to a middle man in music industry.
