    PREFACE

Since many students take courses at multiple locations and in a variety of modes, in this Student Enrollment Profile,we report credit

student enrollments at any location (campus, off-campus, or coursework taken online) that they might be attending. So, please

note two considerations in reading the data tables:

The number of students reported in each campus and category will add to more than the total number of students at theCollege. The total College student counts are unduplicated that is, they reflect a student only being counted once,

even if that student attends multiple locations.

Students and credit hours reported in the Off-Campus / Distance Education category are also included in the totals forthe individual campus that administers each course.

Student Enrollment and Student Demographics for Fall 2013

    Student Headcount Enrollment

The number of students enrolled at the College this fall decreased by 1,298 (4.7%) from last fall to 26,155. The College has the largest number of fall credit

students of any Maryland community college and is second only to University of Maryland University College in undergraduate enrollment in Maryland.

Enrollment was down at Germantown by 3.9%, at Rockville by 6.0%, and at Takoma Park/Silver Spring by 0.8%.

    Credit Hour Enrollment & FTE

Credit hours of enrollment also decreased by 4.9% to 238,136 from 250,509 last fall. This equates to 7,938 FTE (FTE=Full-Time Equivalent, and in Maryland,

the FTE is calculated by dividing the number of credits by 30). Another FTE definition used by many higher education-related organizations is: FTE = number

of full-time students plus one-third the number of part-time students. Using that definition, Montgomery College FTE = (9,240 plus 1/3(16,915)) = 14,878.

Germantown hours of enrollment decreased by 4.2%, Takoma Park/Silver Spring hours decreased by 2.5%, and Rockville credit hours decreased 6.2%.

    Enrollment by Race

Nonwhites represent 71.0% of the student body. Since Fall 2007, new students at Montgomery College could select more than one race code if they wished,

and this fall some 3,681 students are now identified as multi-race (14.1% of all students).

    Enrollment by Age

The mean age of students decreased slightly again this fall to 25.59 while the median remained at 22. Traditional aged students (20 and younger) comprise

40.5% of the student body. Students aged 21-24 are 24.7% of all students. The 25 and older age group remains at one-third of the population (34.9%), while

the proportion of seniors increased slightly to 1.8% (n=473).

    Enrollment by Gender

The proportion of male students remained at 47.0% and females are 53.0% of the student body.

    Enrollment by Curriculum

About six-in-ten students (61.6%) are enrolled in a program of study designed to prepare students for transfer to baccalaureate programs

up from 61.2% last fall. One-in-five (20.1%) of the students are enrolled in technical or career programs designed primarily to prepare

students for immediate entry into occupations; however, students in these programs often transfer to four-year institutions. This fall,

18.3% of the students have not indicated the program of study they are pursuing, have not decided, or are not pursuing a degree orcertificate.

The proportion of students in Transfer programs has increased in the last eight fall semesters, and the proportion of students classified as

Undecided / Non-degree continues to decrease each fall semester, while Technical/Career program students have remained fairly

    constant.

    Special Populations

International StudentsVisa Status and Country of Origin

International Students are not easily categorized, and care should be taken in representing the International Student population atMontgomery College. There are several different ways to define International Students, so caution should be exercised in using

    these data.

Historically, Montgomery College categorized any student who was not a U.S. Citizen as an International Student (n=7,614 this fall

semester). Other agencies and organizations use different criteria; for example, the Institute of International Education defines a

foreign student as anyone who is enrolled in courses at institutions of higher education in the United States who is not a U.S. citizen,

an immigrant (permanent resident), resident alien, visitor, undocumented person, or a refugee. This definition (including applicants

for such visa-types) would yield an International Student headcount at the College of 1,651. Finally, International Students are often

considered those whose visa type is that of a foreign studentnon-immigrant students on an F-1 visa whose primary purpose for

coming to this country is to study at an institution of higher education. For fall 2013, Montgomery College enrolled 713 suchstudents.

There are 164 countries represented by non-U.S. citizen students enrolled in the fall 2013 semester. Cameroon, Ethiopia, El Salvador,

Peru, and China were the top 5 countries represented.

    Disabilities

About five percent (5.1%) of the fall 2013 students (n=1,331) report having a disabilitya slight increase from last Falls 1,313

students. Of the students reporting a disability, 43% indicated a Learning Disability, and 39% indicated ADH Disorder. There are 44

blind/visually impaired students, 61 deaf/hard of hearing students, and 77 students reported a mobility/orthopedic disability.

    New First-Time Freshmen

Students who were new to college and whose first credit term at MC was fall or one of the summer sessions immediately preceding

the current fall termand who are not dual-enrolled in high schoolwere considered as new first-time freshmen. There were 5,199 students new to college in the fall 2013 semester this represents 19.9% of the students and excludes students

who transfer-in from other collegiate institutions. These new students looked a little different from the total student body by gender

(49% were female compared to 53% overall), residency (86% were County residents versus 90% of all students), and credit load (47%

were full-time compared to 35% of all students). The new students varied by race from the total student body Multi-Race

accounted for 22% of these new students, compared to 14% of all students. Whites accounted for 25% of the new students and 29%of all students, and Black students comprised 32% of new students and 32% of all students).

    Web-based Distance Education Students

This fall 4,862 students (18.6% of all students) enrolled in at least one online web-based distance education course or a blended

course in which a substantial portion of the content was delivered online. This was an increase of 41 students from last fall. Most of

them (75%) were also taking more traditional-style classes as well, but there were 1,235 students taking courses only via the web or in

    a blended format.

    Preparatory Coursework

One-in-four (28%) students were enrolled in Developmental or American English Language Program courses. Two-in-three (63%) of

the New students and one-in-three of younger students (age 20 or under) were enrolled in at least one Preparatory course.

    Financial Aid Recipients

This fall, 38.3% of the students (n=10,029) received some form of aid valued at $ 30.6 million. Pell Grant recipients numbered 6,916

(26.4% of all students). Loan volume continues to increase this Fall, 2,096 students (or parents) had $ 12.4 million in loans.
