playing in my head. Last month I saw the Broadway play Jersey Boys, which is the story of The Four Seasons and their struggles on the rise to fame. From the musical, I learned that these young men from Belleville, New Jersey did not have an easy time turning talent into success. It was a long, hard road that they traveled. And when they achieved their goals, the bar was raised. Not until they were inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, did they realize they finally made it. By that time, stardom had taken its toll on the young Italians who chose their name from a bowling alley sign. The group had split up, friendships had been strained, and some family ties were broken. Listening to the songs, some of which I forgot were made popular by Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, brought back the original excitement and made the show all the better. I now have the Broadway Cast Recording in my

possession and, as long as no one else is home, can sing along to my heart’s content.

The nice thing about this was that I didn’t have to travel to New York City to see it. Years ago seeing a top-notch live performance meant traveling several hours to a very large city. Fortunately, those days are over. We are living in a time and region where these shows are within a two-hour drive. I went to the Stranahan Theatre in Toledo for Jersey Boys, but one can find such shows in several other cities in Ohio and Indiana. Dayton’s Schuster Center and Ball State University’s Emens Auditorium are within an hour’s drive with

parking nearby. Columbus, Indianapolis and Fort Wayne all have halls with top name acts. Stay close to home at the Niswonger Performing Arts Center in Van Wert or Bearcreek Farms just across the state line. Both offer shows that attract

audiences from miles away. If your interest does not lie in theater, musical artists perform in these same venues. The late Davy Jones from the Monkees was at Bearcreek last fall while Sir Elton John is coming to Fort Wayne’s Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in April. Head to La Comedia Dinner Theatre in Springboro and enjoy a delicious meal before your show. If you are not comfortable driving, there are

several local tour companies that provide bus transportation, tickets and sometimes dinner as part of a package deal. Watch for ads in local newspapers or ask around. With these trips, you also get the opportunity to meet new people as you travel and dine together. The cost may be more than the price of a movie ticket, but the experience is priceless. The opportunity to attend a Broadway musical should not be dismissed.

The actors in these touring ensembles may not have hit it big ….yet. But they could be only one step away. The star in the show you see in Ohio could be a future Tony winner. And even if the cast isn’t featured at the Macy’s Day Thanksgiving Parade, you can bet that the story will be the same, the songs will follow along and the talent is just waiting to be discovered. We may not be able to see the lights of Broadway from Mercer County, but we can still see the stars shine. Next stop: Cincinnati’s Aronoff Center in May for Mamma Mia!

Broadway’s Not that Far Away

The third annual Mercer Healthy Living Expo will be held on Saturday, March 31, from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Galleria in Celina. Featured at the event will be COSI on Wheels from Columbus, the Prescription Drug Take Back Program, and exhibits with free health screenings and other activities from over 35 Mercer County area agencies and businesses.

According to Ken Obringer, Director of Marketing & Communications at Mercer

Health, the Expo is an extension of the traditional health fair. He says, “We are pleased to be able to offer this unique event to area residents. We have exhibits and activities that will appeal to children as well as adults.”

Returning to the Expo this year is COSI on Wheels. Obringer says, “We are excited to bring this fun and educational exhibit to the area again this year. They will be bringing in their displays that include 20 different interactive activities

for children of all ages.”Also returning this year is

the Prescription Drug Take Back Program. Obringer says, “We will have Mercer County Sheriff personnel at the Expo to facilitate this program. Anyone who has outdated prescription drugs or medications that they no longer take have the opportunity to safely dispose of them. This is the safest way to get rid of unwanted medications.”

Obringer states, “In addition to COSI, we will have over

50 other exhibits that feature activities ranging from free screenings for vision, hearing, blood pressure, weight, and child development to fall prevention information. The Mercer County Health Department will be offering Tdap vaccines ($10 for ages 10 to 18 and $48 for ages over 18) as well as a finger stick lead test ($10).”

Norma L. Smith, 87, Fort Recovery, Ohio, died on March 23, 2012, at St. Rita’s Medical Center, Lima, Ohio. She was born January 13, 1925, in Fort Recovery, OH, to the late William Rohrer and the late Catherine Livingston. Funeral mass was Tuesday, at Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church, Fort Recovery, Fr. Thomas Dorn officiating. Burial was at St. Marys Cemetery, Fort Recovery.

The March 20 meeting was brought to order by Regent Molly Eyink at 7:30 pm in the St. Henry Church basement. Opening prayer was led by Chancellor Mary Lou Guilbault and the Pledge of Allegiance was led by the Regent.

Roll call of officers and the minutes of the February 21, 2012, meeting was read by Bev Seger.

The treasurer’s report was read by Sharon Dues.

During old business, Bev Seger reported many members have paid their dues. The American Red Cross is having a bloodmobile at the St. Henry American Legion on April 4. Members who are able to donate cookies are asked to call Marge Stachler. Also a reminder to members that we will be coloring Easter eggs on April 5. Contact Marge Stachler if you are able to help.

In new business, we donated to the Cancer Association of Mercer County. The Hope Fest will be on May 11 at the Wally Post Complex. The Daughters of Isabella membership breakfast will be on Sunday, April 15.

Winner of the March Harvest Raffle was Edna Striegel. Pot of Gold was won by Molly Eyink, who donated her winnings back to the Chaplain’s Aid. The name drawn for the attendance prize was Marge Stachler, who was present.

The rosary and the closing prayer were led by Chancellor Mary Lou Guilbault. The meeting was closed by Regent Molly Eyink.

The next meeting will be on Tuesday, April 17 at 7:30 pm. Chairladies for the Bakeless Bake Sale are Ann Willmann and Carla Buening.

David T. Russell, age 74, of Celina, died at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima on Sunday, March 25, 2012.

Born in Providence, Rhode Is-land on April 25, 1937, the son of the late Wilbur and Olive (Allen) Russell.

Dave married Wava Lantz on November 14, 1959 and she survives in Celina. Friends may call from 10 A.M. until 12 Noon

Thursday, March 29 at the funeral home, with Graveside Services starting at 1:00 P.M. at North Grove Cemetery in Celina, with Pastor Randy Christian officiat-ing. Military Rites will be per-formed by the Coldwater Legion.

Your 401(k) offers tax-deductible contributions, tax-deferred growth of earnings potential and a variety of investment options — so it’s a great tool for building retirement savings. Yet like all tools, your 401(k) must be used properly to get the best results. That’s why you should review your 401(k) at least annually and make whatever adjustments are needed.

Depending on where you work, you may get some 401(k) review help from your plan provider. But if that assistance isn’t available, you might want to consult with a financial professional to make sure you’re getting the maximum benefit from your plan.

As you begin to review your 401(k), your first question should probably be this:

“How much should I contribute?” At the very least, try to put in enough to receive your employer’s matching contribution, if one is offered. If you don’t earn this match, you are essentially walking away from “free money.” Beyond this, though, the amount you put into your 401(k) might depend on what other retirement savings vehicles you have available. For instance, if you’re eligible, you may also want to contribute to a Roth IRA, which offers tax-free growth potential, provided you’ve had your account for five years and don’t start taking withdrawals until you’re 59½.

Of course, it’s not only how much you put into your 401(k) that determines its success — it’s also how you choose to allocate your investment dollars. (Keep in mind that asset allocation does not guarantee a profit or protect against loss.) Your 401(k) may have a dozen or more investment choices, such as stock funds, bond funds and money market funds. To choose the right investment mix, you’ll need to consider a variety of factors, including these:

• Your age — Generally speaking, the younger you are, the more aggressive you can afford to be with your 401(k) investments, because you’ll have decades in which to potentially overcome the inevitable down periods of the market. As you get older, you may wish to invest somewhat more conservatively, but you’ll still need some growth potential in your 401(k) portfolio.

• Your goals — Everyone has different goals for retirement. You might want to retire early and travel the world, while your co-worker desires to work as long as possible and then, upon retirement, stay close to home and pursue hobbies. Because you each have different goals, with different income needs, you also may need to follow different investment strategies within your 401(k).

• Your other retirement income sources — If you have a variety of retirement income sources — a pension from another job, an IRA, a spouse with generous retirement benefits — you may need to invest differently, perhaps less aggressively, than if you had fewer options for retirement income.

Apart from putting away as much as you can into your 401(k) and choosing the right investment mix, what else can you do to get the most out of your plan? Here’s a suggestion: If you have worked at various jobs and acquired multiple 401(k)s, consider rolling them over into one account. You might save money on fees and reduce paperwork, but more importantly, you’ll be able to concentrate your resources and pursue a unified investment approach, with your investment dollars working together toward your ultimate retirement goals.

As you can see, a 401(k) review and rollover can reward you in many ways — so do whatever it takes to maximize your 401(k)’s performance.

Like everyone else, you hope to remain physically and financially independent your entire life. And you may well achieve this goal. Nonetheless, the future is not ours to see, so you’ll want to prepare yourself for as many contingencies as possible — one of which is the high cost of long-term care.

As you may know, long-term care primarily refers to nursing home expenses, but it also includes services provided in your own home. In either case, though, it could be expensive.

The national average rate for a private room in a nursing home was more than $87,000 per year in 2011, according to the 2011 MetLife Market Survey of Long-Term Care Costs. The same survey found that the average private-pay hourly rates for home health aides and homemaker companion services were $21 and $19, respectively.

With luck, of course, you won’t need to worry about these types of expenses. But consider this: People who reach age 65 have a 40% chance of entering a nursing home, according to a study by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. And about 10% of those who enter a nursing home will stay there five or more years.

Clearly, if you take no steps to prepare yourself for the potentially devastating costs of an extended nursing home stay, you could be jeopardizing the assets you’ve worked so hard to accumulate. Even worse, if you run through your money, you might end up creating a financial and emotional burden for your grown children.

Unfortunately, many people assume that a federal or state government program will help them pay for their long-term care expenses. However, Medicare pays only a small portion of nursing home costs, and to be eligible for Medicaid, you would likely have to divest yourself of most of your financial assets. Consequently, you’ll probably need to find another way to pay for long-term care.

Fortunately, there are investment or protection vehicles designed specifically to help you meet long-term care expenses. Your financial advisor can help you pick the option that’s most appropriate for your individual situation.

Having the ability to pay for long-term care is obviously important. But other issues may also enter the picture. For example, if you need to enter a nursing home, you may be suffering from a physical or mental disability that might prevent you from handling your own affairs. This impairment could prove disastrous to your finances — which is why you can’t afford to take that type of chance. Instead, consult with your legal advisor to determine if you can benefit from a durable power of attorney — a document that lets you delegate your financial decisions to a relative, close friend or anyone else you might choose.

By the time you read this column I will have attended a fly-tying symposium in Mountain Home Arkansas. I had a great three days of tying flies and saw some old friends that I had not seen for a couple years. This is one of the largest artificial fly tying groups in the United States and there are many tiers from all over the U.S. It is amazing what some of the tiers come up with, they look so real it is hard to believe they are artificial. I have gotten some that I would not dare to fish with for fear of losing them. Some take two to three hours to tie and some are tied so quickly it is hard to believe. I will have to

show some of them to my fishing buddies when I get home.

I don’t know at this writing if we will be able to get some fishing in or not. The weather has been raining and the streams and lakes are running to high to wade and fish. Will just have to wait and see. If not I will have missed some great trout fishing. But there will be another day. And spring is here at last so the bluegill at home will be on the beds soon and that is always a great time of year for the bluegill fisherman.

Until next week you all be good out there and you guys give the little lady a kiss and tell her just how much you need here in your life. Also don’t forget the kids, give them all a hug and tell them you love them.

At their March 25 meeting, Coldwater Village Council completed their transition from outgoing Village Manager Thomas Ault to new Village Manager Eric Thomas.

Chronicle reporter Ivan Knapp visited “the oldest tree east of the Mississippi River” in Henrietta Prenger’s woods on Schmitmeyer-Baker Road, Minster. The burr oak tree is 350-400 years and 110 feet tall.

25 YEARS AGO (1987)The Coldwater High School team

of Fred Sowar, Bill Wendel, Randy Kremer and Rex Kremer won the championship at the eighth annual Scholastic Bowl at Wright State Lake Campus defeating St. Henry in the finals.

The Coldwater Mall Sunoco gas station has been sold by Ken Schwieterman to CW Service and Jack Schenking and will be changed to a Shell Station.

Yuko Totani, a foriegn exchange student staying with the Roman Steinbrunner family at Chickasaw and attending Marion local High School will soon be returning to her home in Japan.

exceptionally good basketball in Madison Square Garden as the University of Dayton won the NIT tournament.

About twenty five members of the Coldwater Methodist Church have attended the Ruth Lyons 50-50 Club in Cincinnati at the studios of WLW Television.

Linda Bertke, 13, member of the Immaculate Conception children’s choir, Celina, fell across the railing from the choir loft Saturday morning during mass. She was taken to Gibbons Hospital, then transferred to St. Rita’s, Lima.

Celina Couple Receives Albert HecklerAward from Cheryl Ann Programs

Louis and Dorothy Hoyng never imagined that they’d be-come involved with Cheryl Ann Programs.

They were raising three happy, healthy boys in their Celinahome. Louie operated his custom upholstery shop next door,and Dorothy worked in the high school cafeteria. They were atypical family.

Then a very atypical thing happened. Their middle son,Brian, was struck by lightning in 1981 when he was 16. Withthat bolt out of the blue, the Hoyngs’ lives changed forever.

The odds of being struck by lightning are one in 280,000,but the Hoyngs couldn’t afford to spend much time thinkingabout their terrible luck. They had a son who needed themmore than he ever had. The first years after Brian’s accident,which left him with severe disabilities, were very difficult,they said, as they searched for someone who could help themhelp Brian.

Their school district helped as much as it could.Finally, then-Superintendent Ralph Stelzer recommended a place the Hoyngsknew about but had never visited as parents: Cheryl Ann.“Cheryl Ann was the best thing that ever happened to us,”Louie Hoyng said. “It gave Brian his life back.”

The people of Cheryl Ann helped Brian with his everydaylife. They gave him a place to go and jobs to do. He made newfriends, and enjoyed everything about his experiences there,up to and including the bus ride out to Mud Pike.

“When he would see Sam Morden (his bus aide) he wouldjust smile, and the people in Adult Day Services really knewhow to make him laugh,” Dorothy Hoyng said.

It wasn’t long before the Hoyngs were finding ways to re-pay Cheryl Ann for its help. They were regular volunteers.

Louie Hoyng completed upholstery jobs for the uniqueequipment used at Cheryl Ann, and often, said SuperintendentMike Overman, “Louie would forget to send us a bill.” Healso served a term on the county MRDD board and was theboard president.

For all that, and for their tireless advocacy on behalf oftheir son, the Hoyngs received the Albert Heckler Award at

the staff appreciation banquet in March. The award is giveneach year to a Cheryl Ann family that exemplifies service andadvocacy.

“The Hoyngs both served as good examples of first-rateadvocates for their son,” Overman said. “They rarely evermissed a day spending time with him, and they always spokeup to be sure his needs were being met. They were really spe-cial parents for Brian, and really good supporters of our pro-gram.”

Brian Hoyng died in February 2008 at the age of 43. In theyears after the lightning strike he taught his family a lot aboutpatience, hope, endurance and acceptance. He introduced theHoyngs to a world they had only seen from the outside—but itwas a world where they found welcome and acceptance.

“We met some wonderful people during our years at CherylAnn,” Dorothy Hoyng said. “They worked their hearts outhelping us with Brian.”

Stateline Writers MeetAt the April meeting of the Stateline Writer’s Club, members read

profiles they had written about someone, living or dead or make-believe, and member Eileen Whitsett’s special activity of having mem-bers combine pictures of particular scenes with a person or peopleassigned to them to put into that scene brought interesting results.

Sue Miller and Gretchen Bollenbacher’s proposal for a specialmeeting designed to attract new members was described and approved.Members will be hosted by the Coldwater Public Library in June fora reading of their best work.

At the next meeting, which will be on Saturday, May 16, mem-bers will rehearse for their special program in June.

Stateline club members meet the 3rd Saturday of each month at10 a.m. at the Celina Mercer County Library. Anyone interested incoming to a meeting or becoming a member is cordially invited toattend.

Celina Rotary Dog Park Dedicated

As the gates opened for the firsttime on Tuesday May 12, dogs of all sizes were seen mak-ing their way to the park to get a chance to run in over 3acres of wide open spaces of the chain-linked fenced inarea. Small dogs area is an acre and the large dogs haveover 2 acres. The new park, which is one of newest andbiggest things happening in the State Parks around the coun-try, was made possible due to the efforts of Deborha Borns,Rotary Club President. Her friend, Darlene Lynskey, is alsoworking on getting a State Dog Park in her home town ofSt. Marys. The two dog lovers along with many volunteersworked many hours with the help of the State and CraigMorton, who is the regional manager of Grand Lake St.Marys. Together they cleared away debris from the previ-ously unused land. The Park is located at the end of WestBank Road

Deb Borns saw her idea come to life with the help of theCelina Rotary Club’s major donation and businesses as wellas individuals who helped with labor and monetary dona-tions. The idea came to her after visiting another dog park.At the dedication ceremony Deb thanked many of thepeople who made the park possible. Jeff Larmore, PastRotary President and Celina City Council Member spokeas his 150 pound Newfoundland, Bentley checked out thepark. Jeff is also a large contributor to the park in honor ofthe recovery of Bentley after he had been lost for severaldays. Craig Morton, Regional Manager of State Park GandLake St. Marys and John Hunter, Assistant Chief of theDivision of Parks and Recreation also spoke at the dedica-tion ceremony. Deb concluded her speech with some wiselessons that she has learned from her own dogs. A few ofwhich were: Never leave home without your leach andyour ID. If you stare at someone long enough, you will getwhat you want. Last, if it is not wet and sloppy it is not areal kiss.

One of the many visitors enjoying running free on dedi-cation day was a lab /poodle mix owned by Dave Hochstien,

professor at Wright State University. He has other dogs athome but decided to only bring one at a time. He com-mented that this was the first time his dog had this muchexercise since he got him a year ago.

There are a few small problems to work out with thepark, such as the water faucet would not shut off and therewas a small hole under the fence in the small dog side ofthe park, which of course was found by one of the littlefurry visitors on dedication day. These problems will beeasily fixed. Memberships ($10) to Fur Ever Friends arebeing sold to help with the upkeep of the park. The use ofthe park is free to the public. One of the additions theywould like to have is benches added to the park for thecomfort of the owners.

The green stations placed around the fence for the dogwastes were given at a discount by Florida based companynamed DogiPot. Gary Brown, Assistant Operations Man-ger, heard about the plans for the park and wanted to helpby giving discounts on the pots. The company has all Oxi-biodegradable bags inside the pots for your dog waste. Garyflew in from Florida to be a part of the ribbon cutting andopening of the park. If visiting the park remember to follow the rules that areposted at the entrance. Common sense is your guide suchas:

Dogs should have their current shots The park has little dog and big dog sections, keep

dogs in their own spaces. Don’t leave dog unattended Do not bring a dog that shows aggressive behavior Keep small children under close supervision Clean up after your own dog Never bring a dog to the park that has an illness.These are just a few precautions to remember. Check

the rules before entering the park and you and your dogwill have a great time The Park is open daylight to darkeveryday.

The Paris Wife

Library Assistant I am excited to

share two new items from the library’s collection. One is the DVD Midnight in Paris and a new novel by Paula McLain, The Paris Wife. Both are historical fiction focusing on the life of writer Ernest Hemingway. The movie was a welcome addition to the book and brought it all together in another view. The two venues coming out at the same time is so awesome.

Midnight in Paris opens with several minutes of cameras panning the streets of Paris accompanied by lively Jazz music. These include rainy nights, beautiful sunny days and every famous building and bridge in the city. It truly set the tone of the story to come. This is a Woody Allen film so prepare for surprises and thoughts of “this can’t be true!” On the other hand, just enjoy the ride down memory lane of the 1920’s. This is a romantic film staged in romantic Paris featuring famous characters such as Hemingway, Gertrude Stein, Scott Fitzgerald, Picasso and Salvador Dali. One person told me they made notes of the famous writers, artists and actors in the movie to review their lives and how they fit in during this bohemian time in Paris.

The Paris Wife

The Paris Wife, a historical fiction novel, centers on Hadley Richardson, the first wife of

Ernest Hemingway. The two were married in 1920 when he

was only 20 years old and she a 28-year-old spinster. They honeymooned in Paris and stayed there for most of their married years. She was his first of four wives and remained his most ardent admirer. They had one child, a boy named Bumby, who Hemingway adored. I include

here a quote from the author, McLain, gleaned from an Amazon interview.

“The idea to write in Hadley’s voice came to me as I was reading Hemingway’s memoir, A Moveable Feast, about his early years in Paris. In the final pages, he writes of Hadley, “I wished I had died before I ever loved anyone but her.” That line, and his portrayal of their marriage -- so tender and poignant and steeped in regret -- inspired me to search out biographies of

Hadley, and then to research their brief and intense courtship and letters -- they wrote hundreds and hundreds of pages of delicious pages to another!

I couldn’t help but fall in love with Hadley, and through her eyes, with the young Ernest Hemingway. I was surprised at how much I liked and admired him -- and before I knew it, I was entirely swept away by their gripping love story.”

Hadley had trouble fitting into the Paris lifestyle of the artist, musicians, writers and other famous persons Hemingway was drawn to. It was an existence of partying, drinking and alternative lifestyle. It is will known that Hem, as she called him, was a womanizer and yet he loved and respected Hadley. They traveled Europe and she took to the outdoors and became a skillful skier, which made her healthy and strong. Through all the ups and downs, Hadley remained in love with Ernest and unsuccessfully fought to save their marriage. I highly recommend this novel, as I now

want to check out The Moveable Feast by Hemmingway that features his early life in Paris. Be sure to read the Prologue of the book as it brings together much of their turbulent lives. The library has The Paris Wife in hardback and in audio form. Happy reading.

The Marion Local and St. Henry girls track teams kicked off their seasons on Saturday at the Versailles Lady Tiger Classique.

In the white division, Marion Local finished second with 148 points while St. Henry took third with 77 points.

The lady Flyers’ Allie Thobe won the 100 dash in 13.32 and captured the 400 dash in 1:01.59. Thobe also took second in the long jump. Marion Local’s Gina Kramer took the high jump with a leap of 4-10.

St. Henry’s Cathy Delzeith won the shot put with a toss of 31-5 and took the discus with a throw of 101-6.

Marion Local’s 3200 relay team took third and the Redskins were fourth while the Flyers were second and the Redskins took fifth in the 800 relay. In the 400 relay, the blue and gold was third while the red and white crossed the line seventh. Marion Local’s 1600 relay squad finished second and St. Henry finished seventh.

Individual placers for the lady Redskins were Danielle Speck (second, high jump; fourth, 100 hurdles and 200 dash), Alison Langenkamp (fifth, 1600 run and sixth, 800 run), Courtney Kunk (sixth, 1600 run and fifth, 3200 run), Janel Vogel (sixth, 400 dash and eighth, pole vault), Lauren Siefring (seventh, 400 dash and eighth, long jump), Jenny Osterholt (eighth, 3200 run) and Sarah Niekamp (fifth, pole vault).

I have always admired this photograph of the Schunck Store and the Ashley Hotel on West Fayette, Celina. This photograph is included in the 1900 “Mercer County Ohio Atlas.” As I look closely at the photograph, the pole in front of the Ashley Hotel, appears to be a telegraph pole. The turret on the corner of the Adam Schunck building, is topped with a tall lightning rod. Memories of the 1894 fire in Celina would encourage every building owner to acquire the protection of a lightning rod.

Adam Schunck was a native of Bavaria, Germany; his family came to America in 1852, landing in New York City and traveling on to Mercer County, Ohio. At first, he worked at farming. On July 17, 1864, he moved to Celina and erected a frame shop where he manufactured harnesses and saddles, on this corner of Fayette and Walnut Streets.

Local Celina citizens are aware of the July 26, 1894 Celina fire, which burned the entire block within Main, Fayette, Walnut and Market Streets. In spite of losing his building in that fire, Schunck managed to save some of his stock. After the fire, he built the present two story brick building. He manufactured and sold harness, saddles, boots and shoes, which resulted in a successful business. As indicated by the sign on his building, Schunck’s Sons were a part of his business by 1900. For more information, Adam Schunck’s Biography is included in the 1896 “History of Van Wert and Mercer Counties, Ohio.”

Peter Schunck, son of Peter and Anna (Fleck) Schunck worked in his father’s Harness Shop. Peter went on to work at John Shepherd’s Grocery Store on Main Street, and then at C.D. Heirholzer’s General Store. By 1900, Peter and Frances (Ungerer) Schunck owned the Ashley Hotel, just east of Adam Schunck’s Harness, Boots and Shoes Store, on West Fayette Street. This elegant hotel served many guests of Mercer Countians, as well as many travelers on the three railroads which passed through Celina at the turn of the century. Peter Schunck’s Biography is included in the 1900 “Mercer County Ohio Atlas.”

I believe that the above photograph of the Adam Schunck Store, and the Ashley Hotel was taken by a professional photographer in 1900. It is fitting that a professional photographer is located in the local building. Dollar-stretching SpringAuto Maintenance Advice

(ARA) - With economic factors challenging, many consumersare making tough financial decisions, including postponing or can-celing plans to buy a new vehicle. The typical vehicle on Ameri-can roads is now a record nine years old, according to a recentreport by R. L. Polk & Co. As any vehicle ages, routine mainte-nance and upkeep become increasingly important not only for avehicle’s longevity, but also for its efficiency and safety.

After their homes, most Americans’ second-largest financialinvestment is their vehicle, so helping it stay in good workingorder for as long as possible should be a top priority. But, becausemoney is tight, many motorists today may be reluctant to spendon services or maintenance that they think can be put off at leastfor the short term. Such decisions, however, could potentiallyshorten the life of a vehicle, decrease its fuel efficiency or evenput drivers and their families at risk.

To be prepared for the changing weather and road conditionsof spring, here’s a simple checklist of tips motorists should per-form to help keep their vehicles running longer, safer and morecost-effectively:

Check that Tread: The economy has forced many to postponetire purchases, but with unpredictable wet spring weather ahead,now is not the time to have low tread on your tires.

The lower the tread depth the less traction you will have onwet roads and the greater the distance you will need to stop. Ad-vances in tire technology are helping deliver a new generation ofmoderately priced tires that offer the all season traction and longtreadwear consumers have come to expect, but with enhancedrolling resistance to help save money on gas. For example, theproprietary tread compound used in Goodyear’s new AssuranceFuel Max tires helps save 2,600 miles worth of gas over the lifeof a set of tires.

Watch for Inflation: As temperatures change, so can tire pres-sure. Proper tire inflation is essential for increased automotivesafety, optimum driving performance and significant cost sav-ings, including better fuel mileage. Tires should be inflated to thevehicle manufacturer recommendations printed on the vehicle doorplacard or in the glove box and should be checked monthly. Over-inflation can lead to premature or irregular tire wear and under-inflation reduces a vehicle’s fuel efficiency by an average of 3.3percent.

Breathe Free: Replacing a dirty air filter can increase a vehicle’slife expectancy and fuel efficiency by reducing the strain on theengine, especially during warmer months. Over the winter months,salt, sand and other impurities may build up in a vehicle’s airfiltration system and could be robbing it of as much as 10 percentin fuel efficiency.

Keep it Clean: Your car, truck or SUV has likely just weath-ered the harsh conditions and corrosive elements associated withwinter, including freezing rain, snow, ice, sand and salt. Keepingit clean will help protect your investment from the chemicals anddirt that may attack your car’s finish and undercarriage. Be sureto use quality cleaners and waxes specifically designed for han-dling a car’s finish as regular dish soap will actually break downyour wax and could harm the underlying paint.

Keep it Flowing: Oil is the lifeblood of your engine, helpingto keep it running efficiently and effectively. Over the winter, youor your mechanic may have changed the viscosity of the oil inyour car (especially in colder climates), but in the warmer weather,you’ll get less protection as things heat up. Not sure what oil touse? Defer to a professional or use the grade of motor oil recom-mended by the vehicle manufacturer to achieve optimum engineprotection and fuel efficiency.

Simple car-care tips for gals on a budget (ARA) - For many of the 49.7 million single women in the

U.S., car care can be a pain. Owning a car comes with a lot ofresponsibility and it’s sometimes hard to know what needs amechanic’s attention. For a gal on a budget, calling an auto repairshop for everything just isn’t an option. Lucky for car owners to-day, there are simple things sanyone can do to help maintain theircar.

Did you know it’s recommended that drivers change their wiperblades every six months to help prevent streaking and maintain aclear view through the windshield? to 911. Every year, thousands of children suffer from injuries causedby back-over related accidents. A back-up camera is a great wayto ensure a full view of those hard-to-see spots, prevent harm toothers and possibly prevent expensive damages to your vehicle.Some can even be wirelessly connected for easy installation.

Another great way to save money on unnecessary vehicle ex-penses, such as calling a tow truck for a jump, is to be prepared foran emergency. Gone are the days of keeping bulky jumper cablesand emergency kits in the trunk to feel safe. Now, drivers can havethe power of a boost right in their glove box with a PEAK Car-to-Car Charger. Celina, Ohio – The Western Ohio Educational Foundation (WOEF) is celebrating its 50th year of incorporation. Julie Miller, WOEF Development Officer acknowledges that, “it is by the generosity of all our scholarship contributors that the WOEF Board is able to offer scholarships to students in our area to help offset college costs.” The foundation recently received a $500 donation from Dynamic Federal Credit Union located in Celina, OH.

Dynamic FCU is awarding a new $500 scholarship which will have a cash match from the WOEF Board for one WSU Lake Campus student. Dynamic FCU awards three $700 scholarships annually to credit union members continuing their education. They also support

continuing education for their employees by offering generous tuition reimbursement benefits. Dynamic FCU also supports financial education in secondary schools. They sponsor a $5,000 video scholarship award opportunity and have shown winning videos in the 7th & 8th grade Consumer Math classes. The Northwest Ohio Basketball Club will be hosting its annual reverse raffle and dinner on Saturday, March 31, at Hickory Sticks Golf Course in Van Wert.

The buffet dinner is at 5:30 p.m. with the reverse raffle starting at 7:00 p.m.

The NCAA Final Four games will be on the Projector Screen and three former Ohio State Buckeye athletes will be on hand to speak and sign autographs.

Question: My pet has to have surgery, and I heard that anesthesia is bad for my pet. What are the complications and risks?Answer: Scheduling surgery or dental work for your pet can be a major concern for pet owners. It seems that everyone has heard a horror

story of someone losing their pet due to complications during surgery. Every procedure carries some measure of risk, so it is tough to think about your beloved pet under anesthesia. Before you panic, talk to your veterinarian to determine what is best for your pet and discuss your concerns. Do not hesitate to research on your own. Here are some of the most common myths about anesthesia from Dr. Grimm, anesthesiologist at Veterinary Specialist Services in Conifer, CO:

Myth: Anesthesia complications are common.Fact: Do not let horror stories prevent your pet from receiving necessary veterinary care. Complications can and do occur, but deaths

are very rare. Studies suggest that for normal, healthy dogs and cats, the risk of death is approximately 1 in 2,000. For animals with pre-existing disease, that umber increases to about 1 in 500. A well-trained veterinary team takes every reasonable precaution to minimize these risks. This includes having a knowledgeable staff, appropriate patient monitoring procedures, and proper patient evaluation and preparation.

Myth: Certain anesthetic drugs could harm my pet.Fact: Monitoring a pet’s condition during a procedure is usually more important than which drug protocol is selected. Tailoring a protocol

to each patient’s needs and provide an appropriate level of supportive care. Seldom is one drug better or worse than others since they all have benefits and risks.

Myth: Most complications occur during a procedure while my pet is under anesthesia. Fact: Almost half of anesthetic deaths occur after the delivery of anesthetic drugs during recovery. Ask your veterinarian for the protocol of

how your pet will be cared for after a procedure and make sure you are comfortable with that level of care. Premium care will often cost a little more, but you can take comfort in the fact that your pet will be receiving an optimum level of attention and monitoring during a very critical period.

Myth: Most Veterinarians provide similar level of anesthetic care and monitoring.Fact: Every veterinarian has a different way of doing things. Some may refer cases to or consult with a specialist for anesthetic procedures,

while others may rely on their in-house team. If you have any questions or concerns, ask your veterinarian for details before your pet undergoes any anesthetic procedures, then make an informed decision about what is best for your pet.

Myth: The Internet is the most reliable source form information about potential anesthesia risks.Fact: While some sites offer reliable and helpful information, plenty of others contain inconsistencies or lat-out falsities. Do not be fooled by

misinformation, which can spread quickly from website to website. Do your research on anesthesia and its potential, but rare complications and discuss your findings with your veterinarian to make sure you are getting the most accurate picture. This will allow you to do what is best for your pet and perhaps rid your mind of a few unfounded fears.

Brian Miller, Grand Lake St. Marys State Park Manager, spoke to the Coldwater Kiwanis Club March 20, 2012. Brian began his presentation with the news that “crappie fishing at the lake is phenomenal right now.” He introduced his topic, “The Grand Lake St. Marys Resoration Committee,” by stating that algae have been around for many years – not only here, but also in other bodies of water around the country and the world. Only in the past several years have the algae been found to have some potentially harmful effects. Two different algae species were prominent in the lake lately – one type was present in both 2009 and 2011; a different species appeared in 2010. The 2010 form was very smelly. Brian said it is difficult to guess what 2012 will bring. The Restoration Committee was formed to develop a plan to improve the water quality of the lake. The strategic plan includes many different steps such as alum application, dredging, monitoring, filtering, aeration, and waste management. Beginning in early April a large section of the lake will receive an alum treatment. A new dredge has been purchased to replace one of the three currently on the lake. Several additional aeri-gators will be purchased. Wetland areas are being developed to filter water from the watershed before it enters the lake. Several commercial projects, now in the planning stages, could also improve water quality by either using excess manure from watershed or by removing nutrients from the lakebed.
