Where the Best Taxi Tippers Are in New York

Finding neighborhoods with generous taxi tippers is useful for any taxi company. Intetics, a global sourcing company, analyzed data about 170 million taxi rides in New York City in 2013 to determine the location of generous tippers. This map shows, by ZIP Code, the percentage of people taking a cab who pay tips that are more than a baseline amount (derived from a regression model that takes into account fare, distance, duration, time of day, and so on). The values range from -100 percent (all tip less) to +100 percent (all tip more). Intetics combined previous statistics with how many rides were started in a ZIP Code. This map shows that airports are popular for taxi pickup, but tips may not be that generous. Manhattan, in general, is busy and generous, especially some neighborhoods on the East Side. The map shows how GIS technology supports data science by displaying data, checking for correlation of spatially distributed values, and facili-tating casual analysis.

Business License Locations within Murray City

Murray City

Murray City, Utah, USA By Steve Kollman

Data Sources Murray City, Utah Automated Geographic Reference Center, Salt Lake County GIS

Murray City’s economic development professionals provide real-time GIS analysis to select the best loca-tions for businesses. Before GIS, finding business locations included several manual steps. Business license applications and business location inquiries had to be reviewed by city divisions that research zoning restrictions, engineering infrastructure improvements, code enforcement regulations, vehicle/pedestrian traffic impacts, and distances to similar businesses. This process could take weeks. Today, GIS answers complex questions pertaining to business license and location requests, often without delay at the time of the request. GIS also offers other beneficial information such as alternative locations, traffic studies, proximity to other commercial areas, public transportation facilities, and freeway access. GIS has greatly improved the efficiency of Murray City’s business license request process and provides tools to attract new commercial opportunities.

The Federal Office of Topography (swisstopo) is beginning a comprehensive upgrade of the largest offi-cial map document for Switzerland — the 247-sheet, 1:25,000-scale national map. This is the most accu-rate and detailed topographic map of Switzerland for hikers, alpinists, vacationers, and adventurers. To produce the print and digital products, swisstopo is using data from the topographical landscape and the elevation model, automating cartographic production processes, and providing data in a flexible digital cartographic model. Swisstopo will replace the former national map with the updated map sheets as they are completed. The complete upgrade is scheduled to be completed in 2019. Automation will allow quicker updates to the national map in the future.

The 1:1 million-scale national map of Switzerland is the first visible step in a new era: the produc-tion of topographic maps with the aid of database- supported GIS cartography. With this new map, the advantages of database-supported geodata have been successfully combined with the tradi-tionally high cartographic and design require-ments in Switzerland. The existing digital cartographic model “DKM1M” was produced using an ArcGIS-based application that was developed for swisstopo and can be used for developing a variety of products and services. The georeferenced pixel map and the full-color paper map printed form the basis. The method used to produce the 1:1 million-scale map is also to be used for other scales.

Digital Tectonic Map of the World

Data Source Geologic Data Systems

Geologic Data Systems’ Digital Tectonic Map of the World is a new geologic and tectonic interpre-tation created specifically for use in the GIS envi-ronment. The design of the map is multilayered so no single, physical representation can display all of the information contained in the digital product. The intent is to provide users with a multitier digital dataset that allows them to display global tectonic settings most pertinent to their specific issue. This map shows tectonic elements, including Precambrian shields, fold belts, igneous terranes, and sedimentary basins. The map also shows ocean structural features, seafloor age, spreading centers, and other signif-icant tectonic features.

Tectonic Examples from the Greater Arctic Region

The Arctic Region panel of the GDS Digital Tectonic Map of the World includes a variety of possible data displays using subset layers from the complete dataset. The top row here shows three examples of primary data used in the interpretation. From top to bottom, these are Landsat imagery, elevation data, and gravity. The bottom row shows three possible combinations of the interpreted tectonic map data, including the following (from left to right):

• A map showing tectonic basins with sediment thickness isopachs, spreading ridges, ocean structure, and the ocean elevation data colored by depth.

• A representation of the tectonic geology (rock exposures that define tectonic elements) along with seafloor age, onshore and offshore struc-ture and the passive margin region shown by the pale orange hatch pattern.

• A map that displays the onshore hillshade draped with the Landsat imagery, a deep red stipple pattern showing large igneous provinces, ocean floor colored using a gradational scheme from warm to cool colors with increasing age, the passive margin area shaded in yellow, and the type of passive margin (undifferentiated or with volcanic seaward dipping reflectors) indicated by the bounding line type.
