The  Renaissance  of  Mountain  Biking  in  Santa  Cruz  County

2010-‐2013    This  report  covers  four  years  of  steady  growth  for  mountain  biking  access  in  Santa  Cruz  County.  Our  mission  and  passion  is  to  expand  mountain  biking  opportunities  in  the  county,  and  we  are  happy  to  say  that  we  have  been  working  vigilantly  to  deliver  on  this  commitment. The  Emma  McCrary  trail  in  the  Santa  Cruz  Pogonip  Open  Space  demonstrates  that  mountain  bikers  can  work  with  local  land  managers  to  facilitate  projects  that  benefit  the  greater  community.  We  have  developed  partnerships  with  land  managers  to  develop  more  single  track  trails  and  parks  for  the  mountain  biking  community:

Ø California  Department  of  Forestry  and  Fire  Protection  (CAL  FIRE)  in  the  Soquel  Demonstration  State  Forest  (SDSF)

Ø Bureau  of  Land  Management  (BLM)  on  the  Coast  Dairies

Ø Land  Trust  of  Santa  Cruz  County  for  the  San  Vicente  Redwoods

Our  board  members are dedicated to making Santa Cruz a world-class mountain bike destination and our  challenge  is  to  scale  the  organization  to  capitalize  on  these  opportunities.      We  find  constant  encouragement  in  the  people  who  volunteer  to  make  our  projects  succeed.  The  future  looks  bright  for  mountain  biking  in  Santa  Cruz  County.   Thank  you  all  for  being  a  part  of  our  success.  We  could  not  accomplish  this  much  without  your  engagement,  funding  and  your  valuable  time.    To  more  trails!

EVENTS  Santa  Cruz  Mountain  Bike  Festival  &  Super  Enduro  For  5  years  running,  over  10,000  attendees,  300  kids  and  60  businesses  have  been  enjoying  the  2-‐day  festival  to  celebrate  the  community’s  shared  love  of  mountain  biking.  The  2012  Santa  Cruz  Super  Enduro  was  the  first-‐ever  sanctioned  race  at  the  Soquel  Demonstration  State  Forest  and  promotes  and  supports  the  demand  for  quality  enduro-‐style  riding  trails  in  Santa  Cruz  County.    Group  Rides  and  Clinics  For  over  a  decade,  MBoSC  has  been  hosting  monthly  group  rides  to  introduce  new  and  visiting  riders  to  mountain  biking  in  Santa  Cruz  County.  In  2013  we  started  offering  clinics  with  certified  instructors  to  coach  riders  on  building  their  skill  set.  These  rides  provide  an  entry  point  for  people  to  connect  to  the  world  of  mountain  biking,  its  associated  fitness,  and  environmental  conservation  and  stewardship.    DEVELOPMENT  Trail  Crew  Leader  Training  An  environmentally  sustainable  trail  that  does  not  meet  the  needs  of  the  users  or  the  community  is  not  truly  sustainable.  We  developed  a  comprehensive  trail  stewardship  and  crew  leader  training  course  to  make  sure  we  get  it  right.    Trips  for  Kids  Santa  Cruz  (TFKSC)  Since  2011  TFKSC  has  taken  over  500  at-‐risk  youths  mountain  biking  and  provided  skills-‐building  to  over  1,000  kids  during  our  bike  rodeo  events  held  at  Santa  Cruz  Mountain  Bike  Festival,  Open  Streets  and  Family  Fitness  Challenge  Day.  Our  core  group  of  volunteers  lead  rides  twice  a  month,  help  maintain  our  fleet  of  bikes  and  volunteer  at  various  community  events.

Mountain  Biking  Promotes

MOUNTAIN  BIKING  PROMOTES:        COMMUNITY       ACHIEVEMENT       SUSTAINABILITY          OPPORTUNITES

Community  Bike  parks  promote  public  health  and  community  engagement,  and  helps  children  learn  through  the  natural  environment.  Three  much  needed  pump  track  parks  provide  the  community  with  a  safe  place  to  play,  learn  and  participate:  Chanticleer  Park  in  Live  Oak,  Depot  Park  in  Santa  Cruz,  and  the  Westside  Bike  Park  in  Santa  Cruz.  It’s  always  busy  at  the  pump  track!    Achievement  Trips  for  Kids  Santa  Cruz  gives  at-‐risk  youths  a  safe  environment  to  make  positive  life  choices  by  experiencing  challenging  activities.  Mountain  biking  provides  kids  with  a  positive  experience  of  personal  achievement,  confidence  building,  health  and  fitness,  and  engages  them  in  the  beauty  of  our  public  lands.

"We  never  thought  we  could  do  that!" These  three  girls  had  never  ridden  before  and  they  were  very  unsure  of  the  whole  idea.  They  ended  up  riding  6  miles  in  Nisene  Marks  State  Park.

Sustainability  Construction  of  the  Emma  McCrary  Trail  in  Pogonip  Open  Space  changed  the  area  from  a  heroin  hot  bed  and  economic  liability,  to  a  positive-‐use  open  space  asset  for  the  city  and  community.  The  city  police  and  fire  departments  no  longer  need  to  patrol  against  drug  dealers,  wildfires,  and  encampments  full  of  drug  paraphernalia  and  human  waste.  The  sustainable  multi-‐use  trail  connects  the  city’s  downtown  with  the  University  of  California  Santa  Cruz  campus  and  transformed  “Heroin  Hill”  into  a  transportation  thoroughfare,  boasting  an  average  of  150  users  on  weekdays  and  more  than  twice  that  on  weekends.

Opportunities  Santa  Cruz  is  known  worldwide  for  its  specialty  mountain  bike  related  companies  and  the  county  benefits  from  the  visitors  who  come  here  to  ride  and  shop.  The  Emma  McCrary  Trail  is  accessed  over  600  times  every  sunny  weekend.  More  than  10,000  people  attend  the  2-‐day  Santa  Cruz  Mountain  Bike  Festival.    Trails  and  parks  are  a  destination  for  adults,  families  and  kids,  and  are  an  asset  that  cannot  be  outsourced.  We  support  and  promote  the  diverse  opportunities  that  sustainable  places  to  ride  provide  the  community:

• Customers  for  local  businesses  • Jobs  for  the  community  • Taxes  for  localities  • Safety  for  communities  • Stewards  for  public  lands  • Healthy  activities  for  the  public

The  popularity  of  unauthorized  trails  and  dirt  jumps  and  the  heavy  traffic  on  the  trails  is  evidence  that  the  community  is  hungry  for  more  places  to  ride.  MBoSC’s  work  in  advocacy,  events,  and  stewarding  sustainable  trails  and  parks  demonstrates  that  mountain  bikers  are  responsible  stewards  and  community  leaders.

Our  Most  Valued  Resource  MBoSC  is  managed  and  powered  by  volunteers  who  GET  THINGS  DONE.  MBoSC  volunteers  serving  the  community  and  stewarding  trails  have  grown  800%  over  4  years.      • 2010  =  53  volunteers  averaging  16  hours  of  work  • 2013  =  435  volunteers  averaging  17  hours  of  work  • 150  volunteers  manage  and  run  the  SCMBF  • 302  volunteers  reclaimed  Pogonip  from  drug  use

Net  Income  Trends  The  growth  of  mountain  biking  in  Santa  Cruz  County  is  reflected  in  the  growth  of  our  income.  Raffles  (purple)  produced  over  $59,000  for  the  Emma  McCrary  and  SDSF  Flow  trails  with  2,500  people  purchasing  more  than  12,000  entries.      This  community-‐led  financial  support  encouraged  over  $21,000  in  project  grants  (green)  to  build  the  Emma  McCrary  Trail  and  a  $40,000  private  project  grant  to  accelerate  the  build  schedule  for  the  SDSF  flow  trail.    Income  from  community  events  (blue)  is  an  integral  part  of  the  revenue  mix.  The  2012  festival  production  was  taken  to  new  heights  with  the  introduction  of  the  Santa  Cruz  Super  Enduro  race  event.    2013  Banner  Year  The  strong  increase  in  the  various  revenue  sources  is  directly  related  to  creating  more  sustainable  places  to  ride.  Over  two  thirds  of  our  2013  net  income  (purple  and  green)  is  from  the  community’s  desire  for  sustainable,  purpose-‐built  ride  destinations.

Functional  Expense  Trends  MBoSC’s  focus  is  on  advocating,  educating,  promoting,  stewarding  and  creating  mountain  biking  trails  and  parks.  The  massive  growth  in  program  services  (orange)  is  a  direct  result  of  new  riding  opportunities.

Program  Services  Trends  The  Santa  Cruz  Mountain  Bike  Festival  and  the  Santa  Cruz  Super  Enduro  race  are  our  flagship  events.  Their  success  is  testament  to  the  importance  of  Santa  Cruz  County  as  a  mountain  biking  destination  and  bike  industry  epicenter.  The  festival  and  race  showcase  the  positive  role  mountain  biking  can  play  economically,  socially  and  environmentally.  Over  150  people  volunteer  to  manage  and  run  these  wildly  popular  events.  How  popular?  All  200  entries  for  the  2013  Santa  Cruz  Super  Enduro  sold  out  in  2  hours.    2013  Program  Service  To  say  that  trail  building  work  has  grown  over  the  last  four  years  is  an  understatement.  In  2010,  we  helped  fund  and  build  ⅓  mile  of  the  Tahoe  Rim  Trail.  Three  years  later,  mountain  bikers  helped  fund,  design  and  build  the  1.5  mile  Emma  McCrary  Trail  in  the  City  of  Santa  Cruz  Pogonip  Open  Space.  And,  building  on  2  years  of  planning,  the  4.5  mile  Soquel  Demonstration  State  Forest  Flow  trail,  the  first  purpose-‐built  flow  trail  on  public  lands  in  the  greater  San  Francisco  Bay  Area  was  launched.  With  a  population  of  7.1  million  residents,  we  believe  there  is  a  need  for  more  sustainable  and  purpose-‐built  trails.
