THE EUROPEAN MISSILE SYSTEMSLEADER WITH A GLOBAL REACH

Created in December 2001 following the merger of the main missilecompanies in France, Great Britain and Italy, MBDA has advanced tobecome a world leader in missiles and missile systems. Structural andorganic growth, including the introduction of the former EADS/LFKof Germany within the group and the acquisition of the ramjettechnology skills of Bayern Chemie, has resulted in a multinationalcompany employing 9,500 people (60% of whom are engineers) andserving over 90 customers around the world. In-house skills cover allaspects of missile system design, development and productionincluding seekers, guidance and propulsion systems, command andcontrol, platform integration and testing.

MBDA is the first truly integrated defence company in Europeand the only Company able to provide guided weapon systems foreach branch of the Armed Forces – whether in the air, at sea or onland. Though the Company’s weapon systems have been developedwith European requirements in mind, these requirements, focussingon national defence rather than wide-ranging global operations, areidentical to those of many other countries. As a result, MBDA hasbeen successfully working in partnership with customers on everycontinent.

MBDA is also continuing its drive towards further optimisation of itsindustrial set-up and product offer to better meet the evolvingoperational requirements of both its domestic and export customers. In addition, the Company is also strategically placed to advance anddevelop transatlantic cooperation with the USA.

MBDA

•Air DominanceMBDA either equips or is scheduled to equip many of the world’s currentand future aircraft (such as the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter) with air-to-airand air-to-ground weapons. Meteor, MICA, ASRAAM, Storm Shadow /SCALP, Taurus KEPD 350 are just some of the weapon systems that haveforged MBDA’s reputation as a world leader in the air dominance sector

•Ground Based Air defenceMBDA’s technology has been combined with its advanced understandingof air defence architectures. Aster SAMP/T, VL MICA, Spada and Mistralare available to counter threats ranging from attacking aircraft to TBMs(Theatre Ballistic Missiles). MBDA in Germany and Italy is also involved inthe important transatlantic MEADS programme

•Maritime SuperiorityThe Company has a full range of air defence and ship or air launchedanti-surface weapons in its maritime superiority portfolio. As a result,MBDA is involved in equipping the latest generation of frigates, destroyers and submarines such as FREMM, Horizon, Type 45, Scorpeneand Barracuda

•Battlefield EngagementModern weapons need to offer the highest levels of precision andflexibility. From close combat support weapons such as Eryx andMilan ER to airborne anti-armour weapons such as Dual ModeBrimstone and PARS 3 LR, MBDA offers a range of network-enabledsolutions for modern battlefield engagement

Facing an Increasingly Diverse Threat

Air attack is and will continue to be the main threat that most countriesneed to defend against. However, air superiority is expensive, logisticallydemanding and can never guarantee protection against the widespectrum of emerging threats.GBAD (Ground Based Air Defence) isunquestionably the most cost-effective solution.MBDA’s technicalexpertise has enabled the Company to develop an impressive productrange of GBAD systems to meet the wide range of potential airbornethreats that the 21st century might pose towards sensitive military andcivilian assets as well as deployed forces.

Meeting the Needs of the Modern Battlefield

The requirements of modern warfare have brought about a re-evaluationof traditional close and deep battle doctrines. Armed forces on the moveneed to be equipped with portable or highly mobile, easy to use systemsthat are effective at short and medium ranges against what has becomea very diverse target set. Recent operations have shown that thesesystems need to be both offensive and defensive. They should be capableof providing offensive fire support to neutralise targets, ranging fromsnipers operating from buildings, to trucks and bunkers as well ascarrying out the traditional defensive anti-armour role.

To move against well-defended enemy forces, modern armies alsoneed the support of air-launched ground attack capable of the highestlevels of precision at both short and extended ranges. Most importantly, the future battlespace will place increasing emphasis on a fullynetworked military, with joint force assets integrated in real-time.

This has led MBDA to define new weapons for the battlefield of todayand tomorrow.

Naval Air Defence

MBDA has developed a broad range of weapon systems solutionscovering the full spectrum of capabilities for either blue water or littoraloperations.

The modern threat to surface ships is highly diverse and could rangefrom an isolated attack by a Fast Inshore Attack Craft (FIAC) to afull-scale saturating attack involving skimming anti-ship missiles andcombat aircraft. To counter this threat, MBDA has developed the mostcomprehensive range of naval defence systems. These are based on fivefamilies of missiles: ASPIDE, ASTER, MISTRAL, MICA and SEAWOLF.

Anti-Ship

The ability to neutralise a surface target, submarine or shore batterybefore that target can launch its own anti-surface weapons is essentialfor Maritime Superiority. In littoral warfare conditions, the anti-surfaceweapon system, together with its mission planning capability must beable to achieve correct target designation.

Attacks from small, fast intruders are increasingly likely and the warshipmust be able to react with a short range, quick-reaction system.Submarines, be they in blue waters or the littoral, still pose a major threatto surface groups and a quick reaction all-weather response is essential.

Naval Deep Strike

International waters offer the advantages of permanence and proximityto several areas of potential crisis at the same time. Strategicallypositioned naval forces, suitably equipped with a naval, deep strikecapability, are able to deliver a strong deterrent message to a potentialfoe.

Benefiting from the effort already invested in the highly acclaimed,air-launched STORM SHADOW / SCALP European cruise missile system,MBDA has demonstrated its ability to minimise cost and risk in thedevelopment of SCALP NAVAL.
