No. 16/17 West Virginia Meets LSU in SEC/Big 12 Challenge• The Mountaineer Sports Network from IMG radio broadcast will air on Sirius channel 84 and XM channel 84.• Last year, WVU fell to Missouri, 80-71, in the inaugural Big 12/SEC Challenge. WVU played two times in the Big East/SEC Challenge, winning against Auburn in Birmingham, Ala., 88-59, in 2007 and falling at Mississippi St. in 2011, 75-62. • WVU is ranked No. 16 in the latest AP poll and No. 17 in the USA Today Coaches poll. Last week, the Mountaineers cracked the rankings at No. 21 in the AP and No. 24 in the USA Today Coaches poll, their first ranking since 2011.• The Mountaineers have been ranked 29 weeks under Bob Huggins, including 18 weeks in the AP Top 10.• The Mountaineers have won 52 of their last 55 games at home in the month of December.• The Mountaineers have won 55 of their last 67 games in the month of December.• WVU is off to its first 7-0 start since the 2009-10 Final Four team started 11-0. • WVU leads the nation in total steals (97), steals (13.9) and offensive rbs. (20.7). Scouting LSU• LSU is 5-2 on the season following an 82-60 win over UMass on Tuesday. The Tigers also have wins over Gardner-Webb (93-82), Texas Tech (69-64, OT), vs. Weber State (72-58) and McNeese State (83-72). LSU has dropped games to Old Dominion (70-61) and Clemson (64-61) at the Paradise Jam in the US Virgin Islands.• Johnny Jones, a 1985 graduate of LSU, is in his third season as head coach of the Tigers. His record at LSU is 44-28, and his overall record, including 11 years as head coach at North Texas, is 249-190.

Series Record Against LSU• This will be the third meeting between West Virginia and LSU on the hardwood.• The first meeting took place on Nov. 27, 2004 at LSU. The Mountaineers stopped LSU’s 56-game home winning streak against non-conference opponents with an 84-69 victory.• A year later, the two teams met in Morgantown on Nov. 26, 2005. The Tigers came away with a 71-68 overtime victory over No. 13 WVU.• Bob Huggins has never faced LSU as a collegiate head coach.

Academic Success• Twenty-nine of the last 30 seniors on the WVU men’s basketball team have graduated on time or early since 2004.• In 2014, Kevin Noreen was named to the Academic All-Big 12 Men’s Basketball first team for the second year in a row while Gary Browne was named to the second team. Juwan Staten was named to the second team in 2013.• Noreen was a finalist for the 2013-14 Allstate NABC Good Works Team and was a candidate for Academic All-America honors after he was named to the Capital One Academic All-America District 2 team by CoSIDA.• Three members of the 2010-11 team earned their bachelor and master’s degrees while playing at WVU under Huggins: Joe Mazzulla, Cam Thoroughman and Jonnie West.• Last year, WVU had 13 players on the Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll with a 3.0 GPA or better.• In 2010, WVU received the Team Excellence award from the Big East for the highest cumulative grade point average among Big East men’s basketball teams.• In 2010 and 2011, WVU men’s basketball was also recognized nationally for ranking in the top 10 percent nationally among men’s basketball programs for the Academic Progress Rate (APR).

Big 12 Preseason Player of the Year• Senior point guard Juwan Staten was named the Big 12 Conference Preseason Player of the Year, in a vote by the league’s head coaches. He was also one of two players who were a unanimous selection to the All-Big 12 Conference Preseason First Team.• So far this season, Staten has been named to numerous preseason All-America teams: Lute Olson All-America Team, CBSSports.com Second Team, SB Nation Second Team, Sporting News Third Team, Athlon Sports Third Team, Blue Ribbon Magazine Third Team and an Associated Press Honorable Mention selection.• He was named to the John Wooden Award Preseason Top 50 list and to the Oscar Robertson Watch List.• Staten was tabbed as the ninth-best player in college basketball this season by ESPN.• The Dayton, Ohio, native has been named to the Bob Cousy Award Watch List. Last year, he was one of 23 finalists for the award. Williams Building Off Last Season• Sophomore Devin Williams has started this season right where he left off last season.• In the opener vs. Monmouth, Williams had 15 points and a career-high 15 rebounds (12 on the offensive glass).• He followed the Monmouth game with 15 points and 11 rebounds against Lafayette.• Williams became the first WVU player in 41 years to open the season with three consecutive double-doubles when he had 16 points and 10 rebounds against George Mason. Warren Baker was the last to do so in 1973.• Williams was named to the Puerto Rico Tip-Off All-Tournament Team.• The Cincinnati, Ohio, native averaged 8.4 points and led the team in rebounds at 7.2 boards per game last season.• Williams has 11 double-doubles and 12 double-figure rebounding performances during his career.• Williams’ eight double-doubles last season were the third most all-time by a WVU freshman.• Williams’ eight double-doubles tied for the fifth most by a Big 12 player last season. Huggins Announces Recruiting Class• Esa Ahmad and James “Beetle” Bolden signed national letters of intent during the early signing period.• Ahmad, a 6-foot-8, 220-pound forward from Shaker Heights, Ohio, is in his senior year at Shaker Heights High.• As a junior last season, he led Shaker Heights in points (26.5), rebounds (11.5), assists (3.5), blocks (2.0) and steals (2.0).• Ahmad was named Player of the Year for the Northeast Lakes District and by the Associated Press for Division I in Ohio.• He is ranked No. 43 in the Class of 2015 by ESPN.com.• Bolden, a 6-foot, 170-pound guard from Covington, Kentucky, is in his senior year at Holmes High.• As a junior last season, he averaged 20.8 points, 3.9 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.8 steals per game.• Bolden was one of three juniors to make the Louisville Courier-Journal’s All-State First Team and made the Lexington Herald-Leader’s Boys All-State Basketball First Team as a junior and sophomore.• He was named Player of the Year by the Northern Kentucky Boys’ Basketball Coaches Association and by the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Recap West Virginia shot just 16.7 percent in the first half, finished the game shooting 26.1 percent overall and needed all 40 minutes to hold off Monmouth, 64-54, during the season opener at the WVU Coliseum. An announced crowd of 6,792 watched in disbelief as Monmouth built a 37-23 lead with 16:39 remaining and the Hawks had a 13-point advantage with 13:30 left when the Mountaineers finally started making some shots and began chipping away at Monmouth’s lead. A Jaysean Paige 3 got things going, Gary Browne added a big steal and layup, an Elijah Macon tip-in got the deficit down to six and eventually, two Juwan Staten free throws with 4:47 left gave the Mountaineers back the lead, 49-48. Two more Staten free throws made it 51-48 and then a Staten jumper got the lead to five with 3:18 left. The margin swelled to seven on a Devin Williams basket and another Williams bucket and free throw with 39 seconds left got the lead to eight. Staten led everyone with 20 points – 13 of those coming in the second half – and Williams finished with 15 points and 15 rebounds despite missing his first 11 shots and finishing the game 3 of 14 from the floor. WVU’s other starting big, Jonathan Holton, also struggled through a 1-of-9 shooting performance and finished the game with just two points. Holton and Williams weren’t the only ones struggling to find their shooting stroke: freshman Daxter Miles Jr. was 1 of 7 from the floor, junior Jevon Carter was 0 for 5 and Browne finished 2 of 7. Deon Jones led Monmouth with 14 points while Andrew Nicholas came off the bench to score 10. The Hawks turned the ball over 24 times and finished the game shooting 44.7 percent. The Mountaineers (1-0) were playing the game without Brandon Watkins, who sat on the bench with an illness and BillyDee Williams, who is sidelined indefinitely now after suffering a fracture to the orbital bone of the right eye during practice on Nov. 13.

Recap Jonathan Holton scored 18 points and grabbed 15 rebounds and Devin Williams contributed a 15-point, 11-rebound double-double to lead West Virginia to an 83-56 win over Lafayette at the WVU Coliseum. West Virginia (2-0) didn’t shoot the ball particularly well again, making 38.1 percent overall, but the Mountaineers dominated the glass (50-31), pressured Lafayette and put up 35 more shots than the Leopards. “We made some plays today that we didn’t make in the first game, obviously, or really the exhibition game,” said West Virginia coach Bob Huggins. “We ran some guys down from behind. We got our hands on some balls and we’ve got to do that. We only shoot 38 percent and we’re missing so many easy shots around the goal.” Jaysean Paige, who scored 16 points, really gave the Mountaineers a big lift in the first half when his teammates were struggling to find their shooting stroke. He banged in two 3s to give the Mountaineers a six-point lead, and then later hit a driving layup to put them ahead by nine with two minutes left in the first half. West Virginia held Lafayette scoreless over the remaining 2:29 of the first half to take a 15-point lead into the locker room. Continuing pressure got the lead to 20, 53-33, and then to 26, and the margin hovered around the 20-point for the remainder of the game. West Virginia forced Lafayette into 20 turnovers on 11 steals and limited the Leopards to shooting just 30.8 percent from 3 (4 of 13). Recap Sophomore forward Devin Williams posted his third consecutive double-double to lead the Mountaineers to a 91-65 victory over George Mason on the first day of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off at Coliseo Roberto Clemente. Williams, along with junior forward Jonathan Holton, led the Mountaineers with 16 points apiece. Williams grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds. Juwan Staten also reached double figures, finishing with 13 points. The Mountaineers (3-0) continue to have success with their full-court pressure, recording 16 steals and turning George Mason (1-2) over 24 times. WVU recorded 31 points off turnovers and had 21 second-chance points by recording 19 offensive rebounds for the game. “I thought we played very well for a stretch and got a big lead but then we relaxed and didn’t play very well,” said coach Bob Huggins. “Our press wasn’t very good. We started looking for shots and not looking to score which is something you can do subconsciously when you get a big lead which we did and from then on we didn’t play well. We just gave them the basketball and turned them loose in the second half which is not a good thing to do.” West Virginia shot 44.4 percent from the field and 34.6 percent (9 of 26) from 3-point range. Staten, Chase Connor and Gary Browne each hit two 3’s for WVU. Browne, playing his first collegiate game in his hometown of San Juan, finished with nine points, three assists and two steals in his 100th game as a Mountaineer. Elijah Macon finished with nine points for the Mountaineers. WVU led 53-27 at halftime and its biggest lead was 31 points, 65-34, with 14:16 remaining in the game. Recap West Virginia got 15 points off the bench from freshman guard Jevon Carter and some solid second-half shooting to knock off Boston College 70-66 in the semifinals of the Puerto Rico Tip-off played at Coliseo Roberto Clemente in San Juan, Puerto Rico. “We got ourselves in a heck of a hole by 11 to that team and they’re good,” said West Virginia coach Bob Huggins. “When you play a team like theirs with good guards who control the game and you’re screwing around not taking care of the ball and not finishing, you’re going to get in trouble and that’s exactly what we did. We missed a lot of opportunities, especially in that first half.” West Virginia (4-0) trailed the Eagles by 11 at halftime before catching fire behind the 3-point shooting of Carter and freshman guard Daxter Miles Jr., the two combining to hit four of seven from behind the arc. WVU shot a season-high 54.5 percent in the second half (18 of 33) and was also able to hang on despite Staten fouling out with 3:49 left in the game and the Mountaineers leading by just three, 60-57. From there, West Virginia scored five in a row on a free throw from forward Devin Williams and driving layups by Carter and Miles Jr. BC eventually reduced West Virginia’s lead to one, 65-64, on Olivier Hanlon’s driving layup. Williams fouled Hanlon on the play, but the BC guard was unable to knock down the free throw to tie it. Williams answered with a short jumper with 20 seconds left to put West Virginia ahead by three, 67-64, and free throws by Carter and Gary Browne put the game on ice. Williams and Staten contributed 15 points each while Miles Jr. finished with 10. Hanlan led the Eagles with a game-high 23 points. The Mountaineers forced the Eagles into committing 21 turnovers for the game and also had a four-rebound edge (34-30) on the glass. West Virginia attempted 13 more shots than Boston College, which was also a contributing factor in the victory.

Recap Juwan Staten finished with a game-high 21 points to lead West Virginia to a 78-68 victory over the defending national champion Connecticut to claim the 2014 Puerto Rico Tip-Off in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Staten was named MVP of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off and joining him on the all-tournament team was forward Devin Williams, whose play the prior two nights against George Mason and Boston College helped get West Virginia to the championship game. In this matchup of top point guards, Staten and Ryan Boatright each made 6 of 14 field goals, but Staten was nine of 12 from the free throw line and handed out three assists. WVU (5-0) never trailed and continued to use suffocating full-court pressure to increase their lead to 10, 32-22, with 6:20 left in the first half, and then to as many as 15 by the end of the first half. The Huskies scored the first five points of the second half and eventually reduced West Virginia’s lead to six, 50-44, on a Daniel Hamilton basket, but Gary Browne’s driving layup ended West Virginia’s scoring drought and WVU was able to keep its lead in the 8-to-10-point range for most of the second half – with several of West Virginia’s points down the stretch coming from Staten either on short jumpers or at the free throw line. Late in the game, with West Virginia running clock and enjoying an 11-point lead, Huggins had the floor spread with Staten isolated one-on-one against Boatright. With the shot clock winding down, Staten took off right past Boatright toward the basket, pulled up in the lane and lofted a soft jumper over the rim and into the basket to give the Mountaineers a 13-point lead. Holton contributed 12 points and five rebounds, and freshman guard Daxter Miles Jr. contributed 10 points on 4 of 6 shooting. Browne, playing in front of the hometown crowd, scored nine points off the bench and made a couple of big free throws late in the game. Boatright led the Huskies (3-1) with 17 points. Recap Freshman Jevon Carter had a career high 28 points to lead West Virginia to a 103-72 victory over VMI in Charleston. Fresh off their Puerto Rico Tip-Off championship, the No. 21-ranked Mountaineers took a little while to get warmed up, trailing the Keydets by one at the second TV timeout of the first half, but a Juwan Staten 3 and then 10 straight points from Carter – six coming on a pair of 3-point jumpers – keyed a 27-13 run over the remaining 7:33 of the half. Freshman Daxter Miles Jr. also had a solid night in the scoring department with 12 points on 5 of 8 shooting. In the second half, Huggins substituted liberally as West Virginia’s lead swelled to as many as 34 points on a couple of occasions. West Virginia shot 51.9 percent from the floor, including a sizzling 56.8 percent in the second half, many of those baskets coming on breakaway layups and dunks. Carter, who came into the game averaging seven points per game, made 12 of 14 from the floor, 3 of 4 from 3, and hit his only free throw attempt for his game-high 28. Staten contributed 17 points and six assists in just 21 minutes of work, while Jonathan Holton was West Virginia’s best inside player with 13 points and seven boards. The Mountaineers got an impressive 52 points from their bench. VMI (2-3) was led by Q.J. Peterson’s 13 points, although he also turned the ball over 11 times, the most individual turnovers by a WVU opponent in school history.

Recap Jonathan Holton had a 21-point, 10-rebound double-double to lead 21st-ranked West Virginia to an 86-57 victory over College of Charleston at the WVU Coliseum. The game was a non-bracketed round contest of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off. After a Donovan Gilmore dunk to begin the second half, College of Charleston (2-4) didn’t score again until nine minutes later and by that time West Virginia’s lead had grown to 21 points. The margin later swelled to as many as 34 on two occasions. Holton’s 21 points were a career high. “I didn’t think he had the same kind of bounce he’s had in the first half,” said Huggins of Holton. “A lot of that was our fault because we changed some things in the press that we probably shouldn’t have changed and so we got a little lethargic and they weren’t sure what they were supposed to do.” Jaysean Paige added 15 points and Juwan Staten contributed 10 points in 32 minutes of action. Ten different players scored points as Huggins was able to empty his bench late in the game. West Virginia (7-0) struggled to find its shooting stroke, hitting only 6 of 20 from 3 and shooting 45.5 percent overall. The Mountaineers, which came into the game ranked second in the country in steals with an average of 14.2 per game, got 12 against College of Charleston that led to 18 turnovers. WVU outscored College of Charleston 40-22 in the paint. Gilmore and Evan Bailey led the Cougars with 13 points each, while Joe Chealey added 10. An announced crowd of 7,367 watched the game.
