    Here at Cardi we have been providing a business education or

    some 140 years: a heritage o which we are proud and through which

    we have developed a reputation as one o the leading business and

    A truly international programme with practical outputs, the Cardi

    MBA will equip you with the insight into business practice you need

    our sleeves up and put theories into practice with very little

    guidance. Being given the chance to pitch out ideas to

    Phase 1Foundation September to DecemberDesigned to give you a strong grounding in the basics o business

    management, the Foundation phase introduces you to the core

    components that make organisations unction. Youll understand the

    resources that an organisation requires, the processes that control

    organizational operations, and the approaches through which

    organizations relate to their international and external environments.It also develops the ski lls you will need to complete your MBA study

    successully. (For topics covered see page 8).

    Phase 2Application January to MarchThe Application phase provides you with the opportunity to advance

    your thinking and knowledge by developing and applying the core

    themes studied in the Foundation phase. This phase ocuses on the

    strategic business context, the development o organisational human

    capital, the management o the marketing unction and the analysis

    and control o nancial and business operations.

    Business PlanYou will undertake a business plan that is group based, giving you

    the opportunity to develop team working skills. You will work in

    an international, multicultural team where you will solve complex

    business problems, integrating the skills and knowledge gained

    in other modules. Each member o the group takes on a ormal

    leadership role or a period. The task requires groups to identiy and

    plan the rst ve years o a start up business. The group business plan

    will involve input rom external business mentors, giving you the

    opportunity to test your ideas and to develop urther understanding

    o the dynamics o businesses. Judges in previous years have

    included the senior managers rom Golley Slater, Eversheds, the Welsh

    Government and the Cardi Devils.

    Elective modules

    Advances in Strategic Marketing

    This module explores the nature o contemporary strategic marketing

    to promote a deeper critical understanding o conventional strategy

    approaches and emergent ideas arising rom new paradigm

    challenges. Creativity is applied to engender innovation in strategy,

    existing Western strategy rameworks are challenged, and risk,implementation, knowledge and time are examined as key drivers in

    creating 21st century strategies.

    Consumer Behaviour

    This module builds on the knowledge gained rom the core Marketing

    module by providing an insight into why consumers behave

    the way they do, including the psychological, social and cultural

    underpinnings o consumer choice. A good understanding o the

    main inuences that aect consumers is essential to managers, since

    most marketing activity is based on belies about buyer behaviour.

    The aim o the module is to provide participants with a critical

    knowledge o the relevant buyer behaviour theories, enabling them

    to develop successul marketing strategies.

    Corporate Governance

    This module analyses the conicts o interests that may emerge in

    corporations. These conicts o interests include those between

    the providers o nance and the management, those between

    the shareholders and stakeholders, and those between dierent

    types o shareholders such as the large controlling shareholder and

    the minority shareholders. The module reviews a range o ways o

    preventing or mitigating these conicts o interests. The module

    adopts a strong international perspective.

    Electronic Business

    Inormation and communication technologies (ICTs) have

    transormed both the way in which businesses now operate internally

    and the way in which businesses interact with other businesses and

    their customers. Electronic business is the term used to describe

    this interest in the transormation potential o ICT to increase the

    perormance o business. This module ocuses on the key business

    issues associated with eBusiness and eCommerce and developssufcient understanding o the technical issues to enable the student

    to discern the signicance o ICTs to modern business.

    Global Marketing

    In this module we examine the ways multinational enterprises

    develop their international marketing strategy. We explore the stages

    o globalization and we use case study methodologies to deepen

    students understanding o a number o themes. Topics include: the

    nature and importance o global marketing; rm internationalisation;

    standardization and adaptation in global markets; the importance

    o market research and inormation utilisation in global marketing

    strategy and global marketing strategy in the new millennium.

    International Management

    The aim o this module is to provide students with an understanding

    o the key cultural, national and organizational issues that impact

    on the management unction in a global business environment.

    Active involvement in seminars, case-analyses and discussion groups

    will enable discipline specic intellectual and transerable skills to

    be developed.

    International Sustainable Business

    The module examines the way in which business is responding to the

    challenges posed by recognition o the need to become sustainable.

    This module aims to enable students to develop a comprehensive

    understanding o the techniques involved in Lean Operations and

    value stream management. The student will examine lean tools and

    techniques - the concepts, practice and the competitive benet o

    continuously improving processes and value stream management.We then examine how to take these lean tools and techniques and

    adapt them to achieve a lean enterprise and develop the international

    and global supply chains.

    The elective aims to synthesise the academic theory with a strong

    Management Consulting

    The Management Consulting module provides students with practical

    skills or the consulting world by engaging them with real-lie

    Harvard Business School Case Method which is deployed by most

    Management in Emerging Economies

    Management in Emerging Economies provides students with a

    practical insight into the ast-growing Southern economies that are

    changing the ace o the global economy. Throughout the world,

    companies rom ormerly marginalized economies are nding

    and exploiting market niches and transorming both their own

    countries and the traditional picture o multinational development.

    The module looks at the keys to success at the corporate, national

    and international policy levels. It examines why some developmentapproaches succeed and others do not, and explores some o the

    challenges aced by operators in emerging and developing economies.

    Management o Change

    The aim o the elective is to describe and analyse the way

    organisations change and the role o managers in change processes.

    Students will be introduced to relevant theories and practices

    relating to change management and utilize various case studies

    and other exercises to put these to use. The elective ocuses on

    how to diagnose the problems associated with major changes in

    organisations, combines understanding o major theories o changewith recently developed techniques o change management, and

    critically appraises the relevance o a variety o change management

    approaches to dierent sectors o the economy. Students are

    encouraged to conceive the role o manager as reective practitioner

    and question their own underlying assumptions and much

    conventional wisdom.

    Managerial Finance

    The Managerial Finance module builds upon the Financial

    Management core module and aims to provide students with a

    The aim o this module is or participants to develop the knowledge

    and skills required to design, implement and evaluate commercial

    marketing research projects. The module will thus equip participants

    with the skills required to conduct and appraise qualitative and

    quantitative marketing.

    Strategic Human Resource Management

    The aim o the module is to link human resource issues with the

    strategies o rms and to deploy an explicitly international approach.

    The skills learned in the module will be transerable to a range o

    Strategic Operations Management

    The ability to manage businesses correctly and eectively in an

    increasingly complex marketplace is o increasing importance to

    many organisations. Strategic Operations Management provides

    students with a highly inormative and practical knowledge base

    in which to develop, analyse and practise operations managementtheory in a range o dierent operational situations.

    Through a range o case studies, discussion groups and practical

    exercises, this module examines a range o general strategic

    operations issues such as: dening a robust operational strategy to

    enable company growth; dening customer value and developing

    quality systems products and services; re-engineering business

    processes in order to become leaner, more agile and responsive to

    customer demands; and how Strategic Operations Management

    extends into company supply chains in order to achieve a seamless

    Teaching

    A key eature o the new Cardi MBA programme is the emphasis

    on case-based teaching and learning. Students will work on cases

    which have been careully developed to reect the theoretical issues

    covered in the individual modules as well as practical business issues

    and problems.

    Typically, there will be ormal lectures and these will besupplemented by small group teaching, where the key themes rom

    the lectures are discussed in syndicate groups o between 12 and

    14 students. There will also be the opportunity to attend additional

    surgeries where urther support or the quantitative subject areas will

    be oered in a small group environment.

    Assessment

    The Foundation and Application phases will both be assessed by a

    combination o assignments and examinations. The exception is the

    group business plan, which is a 7000 word report.

    The Graduate Centre

    In recent years, the University has invested over 40 million in student

    accommodation and, as a result, is able to oer some o the highest

    quality accommodation in the British university system. Approximately

    75% o our 4,700 study/bedrooms now oer students en-suite

    shower/toilet acilities and all have high speed internet connections.

    The accommodation is distributed between a range o modern and

    traditional halls, ats and houses.

    All overseas postgraduates, including those rom the EU, are

    guaranteed a single occupancy place in University residences. Onlyater demand rom this category has been lled can UK postgraduates

    be considered; UK students are thereore advised to seek private

    sector accommodation. There are twelve halls o residence which are

    open to postgraduate students. These include a ully-catered hall o

    residence, Aberdare Hall, which provides breakast and evening meals

    Monday to Friday. Some halls provide an evening meal option during

    The Trading Room

    The Schools Trading Room gives our students the practical experience

    needed to ully understand the Stock Exchange.Students test their academic knowledge by simulating a days

    trading, working as buyers, sellers or day traders. The games give them

    an understanding o trading and risk management.

    The Trading Room is open to all students at Cardi Business School

    with trained PhD students on-hand to help student develop their

    skills. Each Thursday the School hosts a Financial Forum with Anthony

    On-site Careers Advisor: Our specialist, on-site Careers Advisor is

    available within the Business School specically to help with business

    Cardi Business School attracts a aculty o international repute,

    whose research inorms their teaching on the MBA. In addition

    to our aculty, who have a wide range o research interests and

    practical experience, the MBA is also taught by external experts

    with specialist skills to oer.

    A large number o our aculty teach on the MBA programme, a ew o

    whom are proled below.

    Proessor Emmanuel Ogbonna, MBA Academic is Chair in

    Management and Organization at Cardi Business School. His major

    research interests are in the areas o organizational strategy, culture,

    human resource management and the UK ood retail sector. His

    other research interests cover all aspects o race discrimination in

    employment, and issues linked to service work and service workers.

    Proessor Rick Delbridge Proessor o Organizational Analysis, a Senior

    Fellow o the Advanced Institute o Management and a Fellow o the

    Sunningdale Institute. His research interests include the management

    o innovation in motorsport and superyachts.

    Proessor Marc Goergen Proessor o Finance, a Research Associate

    o the European Corporate Governance Institute and a member o

    the Corporate Governance Committee o the Institute o Chartered

    Accountants in England and Wales. His research interests include

    corporate nance and corporate governance.

    Dr Kelly Page Lecturer in Digital Media Marketing at Cardi Business

    School and also visiting ellow in Digital Marketing at Craneld School

    o Management (UK) and Grenoble Graduate School o Business

    (GGSB) (France). Her research explores digital media knowledge,

    literacy and participation in Digital Media Marketing Management and

    Management Education and she is currently a board member o the

    Academy o Marketing Research Committee (AMRC).

    Proessor Jason Xiao Proessor o Accounting and Finance, he

    has research interests in the impact o IT on accounting, nancial

    reporting on the internet and accounting in China.

    Dr Stephen Disney Reader in Logistics and Operations Management.

    He has research interests in supply chain dynamics, the bullwhip

    problem and innovative supply chain structures.

    Proessor Mike Reed Proessor o Organisational Analysis, he has

    research interests in critical realism, discourse analysis, new orms o

    organisation, organisational control and sociology o expert work and

    public sector organisations.

    Proessor James Foreman-PeckProessor o Economics,

    recent projects and publications include economic history o

    entrepreneurship, o monetary union, o human capital and o the

    world economy in the Great Depression; Public sector efciency

    including evaluation methods and procurement routes.

    Dr Joe O Mahoney Lecturer in Organisational Studies, Joe currently

    holds an Advanced Institute o Management scholarship, researching

    the management consultancy industry. Joe has previous experience

    o working in the management consultancy industry, specialising in

    change management.

    Dr. Paul Nieuwenhuis Lecturer in Logistics and Operations

    Management, his research interests lie in the car and truck industry

    and in sustainability.

    Proessor Mohamed Naim Proessor in Logistics and Operations

    Management at Cardi Business School. He is a Director o the

    Logistics Systems Dynamics Group and the EPSRC unded Cardi

    University Innovative Manuacturing Research Centre (IMRC). His

    research at present specialises in Sustainable Logistics.

    Proessor Helen Walker was previously at Bath School o

    Management and Warwick Business School beore joining the

    Logistics and Operations Management section at Cardi BusinessSchool. Her research interests include corporate social responsibility

    and sustainability in the supply chain, supply strategy, strategic

    out-sourcing and strategic operations management. She is on

    the International Purchasing and Supply Education and Research

    Association executive committee.

    Proessor Edmund Heery is Proessor or Employment Relations

    at Cardi Business School and is currently Associate Dean with

    responsibility or human resources. Proessor Heery s research interests

    lie in the eld o Industrial Relations. He has written on trade unions,

    civil society organizations, corporate social responsibility, equal

    opportunities, payment systems and contingent and other orms o

    non-standard work.

    Entry Criteria

    Applications are considered rom graduates o approved universities

    with a minimum o a second class honour degree in any discipline. In

    addition, non-graduates with approved proessional qualications or

    work experience will be considered.

    Cardi Business School believes that all participants, regardless

    o work experience, would benet rom the knowledge gained

    by undertaking the MBA. Thereore, whilst the majority o our

    MBA students join us with some prior work experience, this is notcompulsory or study on the MBA programme.

    The School undertakes in its selection process to consider each

    application based on its individual merits.

    English Language Requirements

    For applicants who are not native speakers or have not had a

    substantial part o their education taught in the English language,

    evidence o ability in the English language is required.

    TOEFL score: 570/230 electronic /90 in the iBT

    IELTS: grade 6.5

    GMAT is not usually required, but candidates who have taken it shouldsubmit their scores as this might benet their application.
