ForewordWelcome to our yearbook showcasing the talents of the 2011 MBA cohort. This year we include a selection of students from out part-time as well as full-timecourses. I am sure you will find a wealth of experience within these pages. Ourstudents study hard to achieve a well earned MBA award and we are proud ofthem all. Although some of these students have already secured exciting post-course positions with national and international organisations many are seekingopportunities from January 2012.

A Norwich Business School MBA graduate is likely to have a deep understandingof the practical application of a range of business models, theories andframeworks. Our interactive teaching methods, commitment to group work andintegration of knowledge and skills through real consultancy activities encouragesstudents to reflect upon the application of knowledge in a variety of contexts.

In 2011 consultancy projects have been undertaken with private and publicorganisations such as Isle of Man Steam Packet Company, Marsh RiskConsulting, and Shaping Norfolk’s Future. Many of our part time studentshave undertaken an intensive consultancy project with international companiesin Prague. We were the first university to offer a joint MBA and Diploma inManagement Consultancy (awarded by the Chartered Management Institute andthe Institute of Consulting). This means that our students have deep exposureto a set of skills that can be used in both internal or external consultancy and, indeed, general business management practice.

Our students have studied either a general management MBA or haveundertaken a defined series of electives which together with general MBAmodules cover the domain knowledge of Strategic Carbon Management. As part of the School’s commitment to responsible business our students(full-time and part-time) have generated over £10,000 for charity in 2011.

As in previous years we have maintained a diverse cohort both in terms of agesand nationality (over 20 nationalities represented in the 2011 cohort). This hasgiven the cohort a broad global perspective with no one nationality dominatingthe class discussions around international business practice.

In your search for talent please check out the students in this yearbook. I amconfident that you will find industrious and intelligent MBA graduates within itspages. You can either contact the students direct or contact me for advice andpre-screening. I am always happy to support our graduates who have workedwith during their challenging studies.

“There is quite a focus on teamwork in this MBA and I think itadds a lot to the course. When I look back, I made a very gooddecision to come to the Norwich Business School and to studythe full-time MBA here - I’ve enjoyed the course and I’msatisfied I made the right choice.”

Before Mai came to Norwich she was working as a departmentmanager for Vietnam Communications Corporation, running anational children’s website in her home country of Vietnam. Butin January 2011, she decided to uproot and move to Norwich tostudy the one year full-time MBA at the business school at UEA,and we asked her why she decided to do that, what brought herto Norwich in particular and what she hoped to do next?

“Yes it is true that I had a good job at home in Vietnam, and Ienjoyed working on the http://socnhi.com website which was asuccessful project for me. At the same time I wanted to extendmy background in IT and get some more business skills on myCV. I looked around at business courses and MBAs in particularand decided that the UEA MBA was a good option for me.

“Two things caught my attention about the course – a lot of theMBAs I had seen had September starts but Norwich BusinessSchool’s MBA started in January which actually suited memuch better with finishing my job in Vietnam. At the same time,I could see how the consultancy projects would give mepractical experience of business management – exactly theskills I was looking to build on.

“When I finish the course, I hope I will have increased my skillsenough to get some work in Europe somewhere. I know Iwouldn’t even be thinking of this without studying an MBA first– the course has given me a lot of experience and moreconfidence about my business skills.

“Lots of the things I hoped for before I came to Norwichhave really happened to me. I liked working on theconsultancy projects and a few of the other modulessuch as Entrepreneurship were very enjoyable for me too.The teaching style here is very different to what I am usedto in Asia. Most of the lecturers here have a very active styleand everyone is invited to speak up and participate to thegroup in some way.

‘We’ve been working in teams of four for the consultancyprojects and although I have learned a lot from Terry’s lectures[Terry Kendrick, the Course Director and lecturer for theManagement Consultancy Skills Module], I have also got a lotfrom the other people in my teams. In one of my consultancyprojects, I was lucky enough to be with people who have lotsof work experience. In such a small team you have closeworking relationships, you get to know each other very welland you can learn a lot from your friends.’

‘There’s also a lot of variety within the groups. I really enjoyedthe teamwork in another assignment when we were working inlarger teams. When we looked at ourselves, we saw that the11 of us came from 10 different countries! That kind of culturaldiversity makes group work great fun and of course there’s alot to be learned about everyone’s background and their livesbefore coming to Norwich.’

‘There is quite a focus on teamwork in this MBA and I think itadds a lot to the course. In fact, when I look back, I think Imade a very good decision to come to the Norwich BusinessSchool and to study the full-time MBA here. I’ve enjoyed thecourse and I’m satisfied I made the right choice for me.’

MBA consultancy projects at Norwich Business School:how we teach our students to apply knowledge

MBA consultancy projects at NorwichBusiness School are live and challengingprojects. They are not simply placementswhere a student works full-time in anorganisation for a small period of time.Consultancy projects take place over aperiod of about twelve weeks usually withgroups of students acting as consultancyteams to address real problems andissues in organisations. All of this activityis undertaken whilst, at the same time, attending the taught units typical of anMBA programme.

By consulting over a longer time periodthan many other MBA programmes, thestudents have an opportunity to undertakean unusually thorough consultancy. Ourapproach allows them to initiate discussionwith a wider range of people than in a shortintensive consultancy where access to therelevant people may not be possible withinthe timeframe. Furthermore the studentshave time to reflect on their learning as theproject progresses and, indeed, part oftheir assessment is a reflection on theproject once it has been completed.

In addition to showing their analytical andcreative skills, the students practicenegotiation and time management (theywork to a proposal agreed with the client)and learn to work as a group (never easy!)toward a high level objective. The projectsare chosen so that models and frameworkstaught within the course can be applied.

All of this is underpinned with 30 hoursof formal education and training inconsultancy skills. This commitment toeducation and training is vitally importantwhen addressing real issues that matter inreal organisations. Our approach has beenrecognised by the Chartered ManagementInstitute (CMI) and our students were thefirst in the UK to have the opportunity toleave with a joint MBA and a Diploma inManagement Consultancy awarded by theInstitute of Consulting and the CharteredManagement Institute.

Example recent consultancy projects:

Marsh Risk Consultingwww.uk.marsh.com

A team of MBA General students studied the extremes ofrise and fall in stock market prices in 250 businesses over arecent five year period and correlated these with companyrisk events, both internal and external – “Shareholder value:impact of risk events and relevance of intangible assets”. Thestudents developed and negotiated a proposal to study thisactivity and, with regular contact and presentations delivered, met all deadlines.

The client was “very excited” by its findings and the UKManaging Director commented “The feedback I have hadfrom members of my team concerning the conduct andprofessionalism of the group running the research hasbeen nothing but positive. Our clients regularly ask us todemonstrate the value that can be created by managing riskand this piece of work provides us with another perspective”.

The Forum Trustwww.theforumnorwich.co.uk/the-forum-trust

Students undertook a strategic review of The Forum (an iconicbuilding in Norwich) as a destination for people throughout thecounty. The study undertook a literature review of best practice, identified and studied performance review methods and makerecommendations to the Trust. In addition to a literature reviewthe students designed and ran a range of stakeholder surveysas an input to their analysis and recommendations.

Shaping Norfolk’s Futurewww.shapingnorfolksfuture.org.uk

A team of students studied the issues around sustainableprosperity for Norfolk for the county’s economic developmentpartnership. After a literature review students undertookdetailed interviews and an online survey with key stakeholders, both individual businesses and wider economic developmentorganisations. The study concluded with a series ofrecommendations for future strategy.

Adnamswww.adnams.co.uk

An MBA Strategic Carbon Management consultancy team inconjunction with key internal stakeholders addressed the issueof providing a measuring and reporting framework for carbonemissions and management. One of the key constraints wasthat the system be user friendly and easy to maintain whilstinspiring staff to be involved. The consultancy activity includeda review of legislation and regulation, a series of linkedspreadsheets for measuring and reporting and a friendly rivalrygame – Carbon Combat – to inspire staff to take carbonmanagement seriously.

“Since I started the part-time MBA course, new

opportunities have opened up for me at work and

I have changed my outlook completely. I have

much more confidence in my work now – I really feel

I know what I am talking about and that I am good at

what I do!”
