FacultyThe world of business is rapidly changing, and it is imperative that when our MBA students graduate, they leave not just with knowledge about the world as it is today, but the ability to think about how it might change in the future. This is why having faculty who are conducting research that will shape how businesses think, not now, but perhaps fi ve years from now, is very valuable.

Departments and individual faculty members are frequently recognized in independent external reviews for the volume and the impact of their research. In fact, our faculty is often rated as having some of the highest impact on research of any faculty in the country or the world.

It is through research and discovery that current, relevant knowledge is brought into the classroom. But the discovery process goes beyond that. As a student, our faculty are not just going to give you today’s answers, but they are going to challenge you to think about the assumptions and questions that lie behind them, and how those answers might change as the world changes. It is that forward-looking approach that gives our faculty the ability to help you learn beyond your time here at the Carlson School, and gives you an advantage as you go forward in your profession.

Q&A Todd gordon, Director, Alumni Relations

how important is it to have a strong alumni community? For prospective students evaluating schools, it’s very important to see a strong alumni community. It shows a school’s commitment to the lifelong success of its students and graduates. I’m proud to say our Carlson School alumni community is 50,000 members strong, located in 78 countries, and represents some of the most infl uential companies in the world. We’re constantly building our network to offer more opportunities for our MBA students and alumni to learn and succeed.

how active are Carlson school alumni with students? Very active. Our alumni are professionals in various stages of their careers at Fortune 500 companies, large- and medium-sized companies, nonprofi ts, and start-up organizations. They can often be found speaking to our student clubs or as guest speakers in the classroom brought in to talk about hot business issues or a particular topic that the students are learning about. They are active with the school’s four Enterprise programs, suggesting projects for students and acting as advisors. Many also serve as mentors to our undergraduate and MBA students.

how can I connect with other alumni at my organization? If you are a student who is interning or working at, for example, Target, Cargill, General Mills, or Medtronic, there are Carlson School Corporate Clubs within those organizations for you to interact with alumni and other fellow Carlson School students to build your network and stay involved with the Carlson community—within the company and at the school.

once a student graduates, how can he or she stay connected to the Carlson school? Carlson School magazine, available in print and online, is a great resource for staying current on news, faculty research, and alumni achievements. Or follow us on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter to learn about upcoming events and interact with other alumni across the globe.

Opportunities to connect in person are also plentiful. For example, in the Twin Cities, nearly every month there’s the First Friday event where MBA alumni can socialize and network, as well as our biggest alumni annual event: Carlson Day at the Races. Alumni events happen not only here in the Twin Cities, but all around the globe. We have an annual New York City Summer Social, and events tied to our alumni chapters in San Francisco, Chicago, and other locations. We even have active alumni groups in Europe and Asia. No matter where you are, there is always an event or opportunity to stay involved with the school.

Outside company experts partner with the career center to deliver several of the modules including a session on behavioral and case interviewing.

The Career Advancement series is for our Part-Time and Executive MBA students. Presented in three distinct modules, this series begins with helping students through a thorough self-assessment process of their career goals to make sure they are on a solid path. Seminars on communication and self-presentation help prepare students for the many components of the job search. Finally, for those students interested in developing their career within their own organization, a third module focuses on internal career transition.

LifestyleOff campus you have the pictur-esque spaces and urban energy of the Twin Cities—a metro area that is lively throughout every season.

Recognized as one of the nation’s more culturally affl uent metro areas, the Twin Cities’ world-class museums, galleries, and theaters continue to win national awards every year. Just minutes from campus is the famed Guthrie Theater—the largest playhouse in the region—which is just one of the many theaters in a metro area that boasts more theater seats per capita than any other in America. For outdoor art, the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden is the largest urban sculpture garden in the United States.

With such a cultural milieu come cuisines to match. The area’s variety of cozy diners, spirited pubs, and chic restaurants—some of which are headed by James Beard Award winners or nominees—can satisfy any appetite.

For outdoor enthusiasts, Minnesota’s system of parks and trails is second to none in the nation. It is no surprise that Minneapolis was named the #1 “Bike-Friendly City in America” by Bicycling magazine (2011), the 3rd “Fittest City in America” by Men’s Fitness (2009), and one of Relocate America’s Top 10 “Places to Live” (2010). Sports enthusiasts thrive off the Twin Cities’ seven professional sports teams: Wild (NHL), Vikings (NFL), Twins (MLB), Timberwolves (NBA), Lynx (WMBA), Swarm (NLL), and Stars (USS).

Business environmentThe Twin Cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul provide an economically diverse, globally- oriented business environment in which to live and work. Overlooking the scenic Mississippi River and downtown Minneapolis skyline, the Carlson School puts students in the epicenter of this vibrant urban environment that boasts of 19 Fortune 500 companies and a representation of over 90 percent of all major U.S. industries.
