From the Chancellor’s DeskTERI University has been set up as an institution of higher learning to meet the needs of a rapidly growing economy. One of the key focus areas of the University is to promote sustainability in Indian business. The MBA programme at TERI University helps fulfill this objective by training students to take on leadership, consulting, and managerial roles in industry. Today’s regulated enterprises require specialist knowledge of the unique business ecosystem and, thus, the need for a specialist management education has been felt by the policy-makers as well as by the industry. The support extended by the Government of India and a cross-section of organizations like NTPC, UNEP, USAID, Ford Foundation, NHPC, and SAIL provide a testimony to this reality. The management graduates from TERI University have received excellent response from business areas as diverse as consulting and research, finance/investment banking, utilities, energy/power, infrastructure development, oil and gas, and so on. Why MBA with Sustainability at the Core?

Although the notion that maximizing profit and addressing society’s needs can go hand in hand has been recognized by businesses long back, sustainability issues even in the preceding decade have been hovering merely around the periphery of business operations. The growing sensitivity of the market, globally and locally, towards environmental,

social, and governmental issues, however, provide ample reasons for businesses to bring economic logic closer to these considerations. Hence, sustainability issues are fast becoming the focal point of core business strategies worldwide and the market has also started attaching a premium to this cause. Almost all the big transnational firms have already initiated the process of incorporating sustainability issues into their core business strategies, let alone the fact that the UN has urged the business world for a ‘responsible investment’. The entire business paradigm is warming up to face the reality of the new challenge involved in internalizing sustainability in the days ahead.

Curriculum and Pedagogy

The strength of the MBA programme lies in its unique and exciting pedagogy directed towards building capacity for management education by integrating sustainability into business principles. The programs are envisioned to provide students a holistic perspective of the subject at hand and have a wide approach to encourage interdisciplinary learning.

The award of Most Innovative Curriculum (2011), for an educational institution conferred upon TERI University by India Today magazine stands a testimony to the uniqueness of our academic curriculum, which has been designed keeping in view the requirement of specialized professionals by corporates. The programs continually considers feedback from the corporate sector to ensure its relevance and effectiveness. The students are not only taught theoretical concepts, but are also given hands-on experience through role playing, case studies, field visits, industry interaction, term-paper writing, and participation in related events. The industrial attachment of the students for both summer internships as well as major projects gives them exposure to real-life business situations. A lot of emphasis is given to building analytical skills of the budding managers wherein they solve complex problems using statistical tools/techniques and softwares. Alongside, the students are also exposed to the social and ecological imbalance in the society through their participation in various research projects.

MBA Business Sustainability

The contemporary business models that are followed worldwide have generated unforeseen levels of technological innovation and economic growth but have also made emerging economies like India more vulnerable by putting severe strains on our environment, personal lives, and social systems.The business corporation that has sustainability values

integrated in its operations more strongly and coherently stands a better chance to retain their best employees and minimize the effect of crisis. At TERI University, a synergy between healthy businesses, healthy environments, and healthy societies is taught. This essentially provides the fulcrum of an inclusive growth process. MBA in Business Sustainability not only equips students with acumen to lead in a resource-sensitive world, but also allows them adequate room to inculcate the basic tenets of inclusion and sustainability. The programme includes conventional MBA courses in Marketing, Business Strategies, Finance, and IT, apart from a basket of electives and integrates the same with sustainability concepts. In that sense it is an MBA plus programme. The learning process is highly participatory and students are encouraged to debate on sustainability principles and practices and brainstorm on multiple solutions for the contemporary sustainability challenges that business organizations of the twenty-first century face, or are likely to face. An additional emphasis is also given on providing historical, ideological, and contextual perspectives on the concepts and strategies employed by the businesses and their stakeholders.

MBA (Business Sustainability)Functional ElectivesStudents have the flexibility to pursue one or more functional specializations during the third and the fourth semesters. They are to select a set of at least 6 elective courses from the designated streams. A minimum of 3 electives from any stream constitutes a specialization.

The coursework encompasses all the aspects of the infrastructure sector right from the development stages to the execution stage, continuing on till the operations. Critical topics such as regulatory policy, sector economics, finance, and commercials as well as the socio-political aspects associated with large projects are addressed intensely. This equips students from TERI University with skill-sets required for succeeding in the complex world of Infrastructure development and management.

MBA Infrastructure

With the recent bout of worldwide recession, investments in infrastructure have become crucial in order to sustain the pace of economic growth. The patterns of infrastructure development determine the environmental sustainability of ‘green’ economic growth. Infrastructure has been recognized by the Indian government as the engine of robust future growth

of the economy. The latest Union Budget 2012–13 bears ample testimony to such recognition with a substantially enhanced allocation for the sector to 50 lakh crore. Thus, clearly, the Indian Infrastructure Industry is entering a rejuvenated phase and would inevitably require a pool of skilled professionals to steer its path in a steady manner. We at TERI University have risen to these challenges well in advance by offering an MBA plus programme with a specialization in infrastructure. We are dubbing it as MBA plus programme because the programme not only imparts the students the managerial skills in core subjects like any other conventional MBA course but additionally equips them with acumen in sustainable infrastructure management by offering sector electives in transport, energy, telecom, and urban infrastructure. The course also provides a foundation for effective management of Infrastructure Services through comprehensive courses on the regulatory process and competition policy in the sector. At the University, we condition the students not only with strong conceptual foundation but also instill in them the confidence to counter the rigour and challenges pertaining to the growth of the sector and stand out as the business leaders of tomorrow.

Summer Internships

A Summer Internship between 6-8 weeks is an integral part of the curriculum which provides the students an industrial exposure enabling them

to understand the practical applicability of theoretical know-how. The students work in various sectors across the industry and gain insightful knowledge which equips them with the skill that are requisite to carve a niche for themselves in the industry. Summer internship sets the pace for their forthcoming Major Projects which is a 10-12 weeks long industrial training programme from March to May, upon which they submit a dissertation which comprises 20 credits of the final semester. Events at TERI UniversityLeadership Summit ’11

Leaders such as Mr BC Tripathi, CMD, GAIL and Mr S Chouksey, Whole Time Director, JK Lakshmi Cement, were invited to share their visions and perspectives with the youth of the country on

the challenges that businesses are facing today to sustain themselves in the long run. The intent behind the discussion was to understand the top management’s perspective on how they thrive and sustain their businesses in these times of changing world order and to discuss the relevance of the three pillars of sustainability—Environment, Society, and Ethics—in the times to come.

Transcendence ‘11 The students of the Department of Business Sustainability organized its first Business Festival from the 2–3 December. Transcendence '11 aimed at spreading awareness about the central theme of Business Sustainability.“The Live Case Study and Business Plan Competitions, which the students, both participated in as well as organized, attracted huge participation from other institutes and helped widen their horizons.” Organizing the business fest, helped the students hone their managerial and administrative skills. At TERI, we believe in learning by doing and sharing, hence, Transcendence '11 is another indicator of our conviction.

Lighting a Billion Lives (LaBL): International Torchbearer ProgrammeStudents at TERI, volunteered for the ‘Lighting a Billion Lives’ initiative. The initiative involves the development of a sustainable business model for providing solar lanterns to the remote regions of the nation. The work of the students was focussed on identifying these loopholes and suggesting remedial measures to make the initiative more robust and financially sound. Door-to-door surveys and one-to-one interactions were carried out at various sites, like Gorakhpur, Chitrakoot, Mayurbhanj, etc.
