W elcome to the Master Builders’ Association of Western Pennsylvania 2015 calendar. A new year is a good time to remind our members, associates, affiliates, industry

partners and friends that the MBA’s services to our industry include:

• Negotiation of collective bargaining agreements with the Carpenters, Cement Masons, Laborers and Operating Engineers.

• The appointment of members to serve as trustees on our union’s local and regional medical, annuity, and pension funds.

• The appointment of members to serve as trustees for apprenticeship training.

• Staffing, coordination and administration of labor-management committees, drug testing programs and grievance-handling committees.

• The full time staff cultivating the industry’s safety culture; providing training, jobsite visits and OSHA intercession.

• Staffing, coordination and administration of the liaison committee with the local chapter of the American Institute of Architects where best practices are identified and promoted.

• Presenting continuing education workshop opportunities for BIM, sustainability, the changing legal landscape and others.

• Marketing our members. • Working in conjunction with the Allegheny Conference

on Community Development to promote employment in construction.

• Engaging and empowering our youth to contribute to the mission.

• Goodwill among competitors through the annual golf outing.

• The MBA contractor’s voice in various political

forums through the General Contractors Association of Pennsylvania.

• Promotion of our member’s substantial impact on building the region through The Construction Industry Evening of Excellence competition each year.

• Community involvement in the region through underpinning support of Rebuilding Together Pittsburgh and other philanthropic endeavors.

The opening pages of the calendar contain a summary of the MBA committees and a roster of its members. Your review will find that the services outlined above are facilitated by these committees. The committees are the think-tanks of the Association. When primed with the creative professional minds of our industry, who volunteers their time, we all benefit at the business level. The MBA is grateful for the member’s service to our industry and we honor each and every individual for their committee contributions.

The theme to this year’s calendar is community service and the sidebar captions throughout remind us to give back to our community. I love the quote, “When we’re very young, people take care of us; when we’re very old, people take care of us; in between, we’re supposed to take care of others.” At the top of the MBA list of caring is that the MBA established Rebuilding Together Pittsburgh (RTP). Now entering its 22nd year of existence, RTP has made improvements to over 2,000 homes in our region. Many of these homes are owned by low-income elderly, the individuals from previous generations that built the Steel City into what has become one of the country’s best places to live, work and visit.

The photographs associated with each month of 2015 are of buildings that represent some of the projects that are competing in the 2014 MBA Building Excellence Awards program. The award winning projects will be announced this year on Thursday, February 26, 2015 at the Heinz Field East Club during The Construction Industry Evening of Excellence. The region’s construction industry views The Evening of Excellence as the industry’s celebration and the MBA’s finest event of the year. We hope to see you there.

In closing, on behalf of the MBA I would like to say thank you. Thank you to each individual on an MBA committee and those volunteering their time on the trust funds. Thank you to the MBA staff. And, to everyone that provided assistance to the MBA and utilizes its programs. Each and every one of us working together is the reason our region’s construction community is an outstanding place to do business.

Sincerely,Dean Mosites

In the late 1990s, the MBA launched the Mentor-Protégé Program as a way for emerging companies to learn from established contractors. This program was intent on building a base of minority businesses in Pittsburgh. Despite the program is no longer in existence, the MBA still assists small businesses by opening its doors for trainings and educational events. Additionally, the Association hosts a yearly networking event titled “Meet the Master Builders” which introduces current members to minority and woman owned firms.

The MBA is respected around the country for its philanthropic efforts. Four years ago, the Associated General Contractors of America created the “AGC in the Community Award” to recognize construction companies and AGC Chapters for their efforts in the community. During the four years of this award, the MBA has claimed this prestigious award twice – once for establishing Christmas in April (now known as Rebuilding Together Pittsburgh) and the other award for the large number of toys collected annually for the Association’s toy drive.

Pittsburgh

Established in 1993 by the MBA and the Carpenters Union, Rebuilding Together Pittsburgh (RTP) has the vision to create a safe and healthy home for every low-income elderly, veteran and physically or mentally challenged homeowner. To assure the success of RTP well into the future, RTP launched the Rebuilding Together Pittsburgh Endowment – Ann Billak Fund. Mrs. Billak was the co-founder of RTP, along with Bill Waterkotte of the Carpenters Union, and she is the major reason that RTP has been able to achieve so much over its existence. The MBA proudly contributed a sizeable donation to the Ann Billak Fund and many members continue to support it. Last year, Mascaro Construction received the prestigious RTP Silver Hammer Award for community service.

Last year at the Carpenters Open House, the annual Design-Build Competition benefited Camp Kon-O-Kwee Spencer as six new obstacles were made and added to the famous Trail of Courage. This ongoing support began as early as 1993 when thousands of construction volunteers built the 440-foot steel framed bridge that connects Camp Kon-O-Kwee and Camp Spencer, forever uniting the two YMCA camps. Along with forging the camps, a kinship was established by the MBA and the Fombell, PA youth camp. Many firms like Burchick Construction, PJ Dick Incorporated and Cleveland Brothers have led groups of volunteers to accomplish tasks such as constructing Kramer Hall, replacing roofs on cabins and resurfacing paved areas.

The MBA teams with the Construction Advancement Program (CAP) to provide assistance to the University of Pittsburgh Construction Management Program. Along with meeting with students and serving as a guest lecturer from time to time, the MBA and CAP also provide annual scholarships to enrolled students. In the early 1990s, CAP responded to an inquiry from Pitt’s Engineering Department to do a needs assessment of the construction community so that Pitt could expand its engineering studies into areas that would improve the skills and the marketability of its graduates. As a result of this assessment, the Pitt CM program was launched.

While many nonprofits host annual fundraisers and days of giving, which require some discretionary funding and perhaps a little elbow grease, many members of the MBA find themselves involved in larger acts of kindness projects. One such example happened during the Fall of 2014 when the Metro Pittsburgh Youth for Christ was in need of converting the former National Guard Armory in Canonsburg into a youth center. A construction team of Nello Construction, Specified Systems, Carpenters from the Keystone+Mountain+Lakes Regional Council of Carpenters and a few other companies united to convert the building into a youth center. The entire project was valued at $18,000 and it was completed at no charge to the Youth for Christ organization.

Many MBA members shed blood, sweat and tears when they perform labor-intense activities to help their preferred charities. However, it’s not all back-breaking work when it comes to showing support for nonprofits. Construction professionals also enjoy time on the golf course or shooting clays to raise funds for their charity. Many within the membership take it a step further for their charity by serving on Boards or Committees to steer the organization. Also, in some cases members have gone all-in for a cause that has touched them, which was the case at Massaro Corporation when they launched the Joseph A. Massaro Alzheimer’s Research Fund, named after the founder of the company who has had Alzheimer’s disease for several years.

The ACE stands for Architecture, Construction and Engineering and the ACE program helps to mentor high school students, inspiring them to pursue careers in design and construction. Since the inception of the Western Pennsylvania Chapter of ACE, the MBA has been actively supporting this organization. Many members serve as mentors for the educational sessions and a few times a year the students tour MBA jobsites. Plus ACE is the benefactor for the annual MBA Young Constructors Golf Outing, with the proceeds going to annual scholarships for students pursuing a career in an ACE discipline.

During the 1990s, the MBA introduced the Build Up! Program to elementary schools. This is a two-week program that involves an MBA member providing a presentation on working in construction and then the grade school students work on a hands-on construction activity. At the conclusion of the two weeks, the MBA member returns to the classroom to review the projects and answer any questions the students may have about their construction activity. Despite the Build Up! Program no longer being offered, the MBA still reaches out to the grade schools in Allegheny County with its Kids Construction Art Contest. Each year the MBA receives over 100 pieces of art and presents information on the construction industry to area schools.

The MBA and its membership proudly support those that served our country in a variety of ways and through numerous veterans’ organizations. The MBA promotes available construction positions to many military channels to reach veterans to alert them of these career opportunities. RBVetCo joined other construction companies and representatives from organized labor to give the Mechling-Shakley Veterans Center in Cowansville a $42,000 facelift courtesy of the Home Depot Foundation. The volunteer labor put on a new roof, installed new flooring and cabinets, as well as many other upgrades to the facility.

Since 2006, the MBA’s Young Constructors has hosted a Holiday Party on behalf of the Association. This event unites the entire industry while at the same time raises funds and toys for those less fortunate. Since the inception of this event, the MBA has raised over 2,500 toys for the Marines Toys For Tots Foundation and over $30,000 for various nonprofits such as the Mario Lemieux Foundation.

Page 34: MBA 2014 Annual Report

The beginning of 2014 had the makings of a landmark year for the Western Pennsylvania construction industry. The

office, industrial, hotel and retail sectors were up from the previous year and many construction economists were predicting further growth in 2014. Even though population grew in our region, residential construction came off of its best year in decades and the energy industry continued to plant roots in our region, the construction industry didn’t quite live up to expectations – however the future looks very promising in 2015. I’m hopeful that every member will see their business improve in 2015 and beyond.

While an unpredictable economy with its peaks and valleys is nothing new, the one constant over the years in our region’s construction industry is that the MBA will be a positive force. The theme of this year’s publication is community service and I hope everyone enjoyed a few of the highlights throughout this report on some of the ways that the MBA has been involved in making our region a better place to live, work and play.

When people think about giving back, they often think of community service and volunteering time, money and expertise for the benefit of those less fortunate. While it cannot take credit for all the charitable giving of its members, the MBA tries to give back to its own industry. The Western Pennsylvania

construction industry is a relatively small, highly competitive market place, and the “people” of the MBA (Board, Committee volunteers and Affiliate members) give selflessly of themselves to improve the construction industry for everyone. The MBA “people” work hard for the benefit of its members, non-members and the industry at large by promoting a better, safer and more sustainable way to build our region. By mentoring the younger up and coming construction leaders, the MBA is doing its part to prepare for the future growth and prosperity of Pennsylvania’s economy.

We are grateful for all of our MBA “people”. I would like to make this offer to the membership: within the MBA the vehicles are in place for you to volunteer your time, skills and expertise to give back to your industry. The committees are where the real work gets done and we are always seeking enthusiastic and knowledgeable individuals to help carry out the goals and objectives of the Association.

As you review this publication please pay close attention to the mission and major activities of the committees. Can you envision yourself ‘giving back’ to your profession, your community? How will you impact our region? What legacy will you leave? If you have a passion for a particular segment of the construction industry or you simply want to learn from your peers, talk to me about serving on an MBA committee. My door is always open so please do not hesitate to contact me to discuss how committee involvement can enrich your career while shaping the MBA’s future.

With your help, we will continue Leading the Industry, Building the Region!
