Regardless of your age, you should understand your retirement benefits. If you are in CalPERS, you need to know how to preserve your retirement if you leave your current job and work in an-other public agency or private industry.
If you are injured or seriously ill, you may be eligible for CalPERS and/or Social Security disability retirement.
You Deserve the Most from Your CalPErS retirementAsk your employer if they identified to CalPERS each month you worked
(including summer school). It’s the law!
If you were in CalPERS prior to January 1, 2013 and are under age 63 when you retire, planning your retirement date on your birthday or 3, 6, or 9 months after your exact birthday may increase your benefit. If you became a CalPERS member after January 1, 2013 you have a new formula that does not reach the maximum benefit factor until age 67 so you will want to continue taking those dates into consideration at retirement.
Working after retirement rules You may only substitute in a CalPERS covered agency for up to 960 hours in a fiscal year, and there is a six-month waiting period. You may NOT take a permanent, part-time position (two
or three hours per day) even if the hours do not add up to 960 per fiscal year.
Attend a SeminarIf you are within five years of retirement, attend a Saturday Pre-Retirement Seminar sponsored by CSEA’s Pre- Retirement Resource Committee. Check www.csea.com/retirement for details.
