    Base Bushing

    Installation Manual

    Estimated Installation Time: 30-40 Minutes

    Tools Required: -Philips head and large flat head screw driver

    -8mm and 10mm sockets-Ratchet with an extension1. Unscrew the stock shift knob byrotating it counter clockwise.

    2. Open the storage compartment inthe center console and remove thefoam rubber mat in the bottom toaccess the 2 bolts. Use an 8mmsocket and ratchet with an extension to

    remove the 2 bolts.

    3. Lift up on the rear half of theconsole to begin removal. The rearportion can be removed from the carand put in a safe place.

    4. Continue console removal by liftingthe front of the console with the shiftboot attached. The front portion of theconsole can now be removed and putin a safe place.

    5. Unscrew the two 8mm bolts at thefront of the console with an 8mmsocket and ratchet or a Philips headscrewdriver.

    6. Remove the ashtray by pulling upand out.

    7. Remove the lighter face plate bypulling up and out. Use both hands toremove the plate, one below the smalldoor and one above. The cables

    connected to the back of the plate canbe left connected, simply set the faceplate aside on the drivers side so it isout of the way of the center console.

    8. Use a ratchet and an 8 mm socketor a Philips head screwdriver toremove the 2 screws exposed byremoving the lighter face plate.

    9. The center console can now bebacked up a few inches to access thewhite plastic connector which providespower to the rear compartment in thecenter console (Mazda Speed 3 only).Disconnect the white plastic connectorto free the center console from theharness and enable it to be removed

    from the car.

    10. Remove the entire console fromthe car by lifting up and back.

    11. Use a large flat head screwdriverto pop off the shifter cable that controlsside to side movement from the steelplate on the drivers side of the shiftassembly. Use the steel plate as ananchor point for the screwdriver andpry until the cable pops off. This isdone to have easier access to the frontleft bolt on the shift assembly.

    Note: It is not necessary to remove theshifter cable which attaches to theshifter itself.

    12. Use a 10mm socket and ratchet toremove the 4 bolts holding the shiftassembly to the floor pan of the car.Put the bolts in a safe place for re-installation later.

    13. Use a flat head screwdriver to prythe 4 steel inserts out of the rubberbushings at each corner of the shifterassembly. Work your way around eachbushing prying upward to slide themout.

    14. Lift the corner of the shift assemblyjust enough to place your handbeneath it. With the other hand, useyour finger or thumb to push the rubberbushing out through the bottom of theshift assembly while pulling on thebushing from under the assembly.Repeat for all 4 corners of the shiftassembly until all the bushings havebeen removed.

    15. Lift the shifter assembly and lineup all four bushings with the bolt holesin the floor, make sure the smallerdiameter of the bushings faces upward.Lower the shifter assembly on to thebushings ensuring that the smallerdiameter on the bushings goes in to the

    holes in the plastic shifter assembly.

    If the bushings do not line up with theholes in the shift assembly perfectlythey can be adjusted by sliding a fingeror screwdriver beneath the assembly toadjust them.

    16. With all the bushings lined up withthe holes in the assembly, place thewashers provided with the kit on top ofthe shift assembly above the bushings.

    17. Re-install the four bolts and tightendown with a 10mm socket and ratchet.Be sure the shift assembly remainsproperly seated on the bushings as youtighten the assembly down. This ismost easily accomplished if you justfinger tighten all 4 bolts at first, thentighten them down when you are sure

    the assembly is well seated on thebushings.

    18. Re-install the shifter cable on tothe pivot ball of the steel plate on thedrivers side of the shift assembly. It

    can be pressed on by hand.

    19. Re-install the center console byreversing steps 1 to 10 and youreready to drive.
