The contribution to community life by these organisations has been invaluable - not only to the general wellbeing of our City but to the thousands of people touched by their generosity of spirit, friendship and assistance. We recognised 22 groups in the Senior, Youth and Open categories and my congratulations and thanks go to them all. Double demerit points apply to speeding, illegal use of mobile phones, not wearing a seatbelt and riding without a helmet. Our new Courtesy Edition road safety calendar is a timely reminder to all road users to be more tolerant and courteous. Pick up a copy at libraries and customer service counters. At the beach or near the pool, water safety begins with you. Children are fascinated and attracted to water so make sure there is adequate supervision at all times and always be within arm’s reach. Finally, a sobering message is that you don’t have to be drunk to be affected by alcohol, whether driving or in the water. Alcohol contributes to at least 20 per cent of adult drownings and a staggering 41 per cent in the 15 to 29 age group. Alcohol distorts your perception of risk and your own abilities. In closing, I would like to say what a privilege it is to serve as your Mayor. On behalf of my fellow Councillors and Council staff, I wish each and every one of you a safe, happy and peaceful Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
