Fallen Servicemen Honored at Annual Memorial Day Ceremony

M ayor Wayne Zitt and the town council hosted Guttenberg’s annual Memorial Day ceremony in Monument Park on Monday, May 28. Town Administrator Cosmo Cirillo acted as master of ceremonies, with

Mayor Zitt offering a tribute to the U.S. servicemen and servicewomen who died while serving our country.

Among those remembered at the event was Private First Class Felipe Ramirez, who was killed in a motorcycle crash in 2010. A wreath was placed at the monument in honor of the former Guttenberg resident.

Register Kids Ages 5-16 Now for Summer Camp

R egistration is open now for Guttenberg’s annual summer camp for kids. The Recreation Department is once again offering a day-camp style social and educational experience for children ages 5 to 16 years old

(must have completed kindergarten), with daily structured activities and games, weekly Adventure Club trips, bowling, swimming, and arts & crafts. Children are also provided a daily lunch and afternoon snack at no additional cost.

The camp will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday, July 2 through Friday, Aug. 10 (no camp on July 4). All children must be picked up by 3 p.m. Activity

locations include the Guttenberg Community Center, Veterans Park, the Guttenberg Softball Field, Waterfront Park, and the Anna L. Klein School.

Kids up to 8 years old can participate in sprinkler/water shower activities and Junior Adventure Club trips. Kids 9 to 16 years old can join Adventure Club trips to exciting destinations including Medieval Times for theatrical entertainment and live jousting; the Funplex indoor amusement park in East Hanover; a NJ Jackals baseball game; and more. It’s been a busy springtime in Guttenberg, with the town sponsoring numerous free health and wellness activities for residents in anticipation of a great summer ahead. In this issue you’ll also read about some of the many other programs we’ve hosted recently, including concert outings for seniors and a free Memorial Day BBQ for the whole town. Looking ahead, we’ve got plenty of exciting things planned for the summer, such as our ever-popular Summer Concert Series, this year expanding beyond Boulevard East to bring fabulous free music to other locations in town, including our stunning Waterfront Park. Get ready for a great time in Guttenberg this summer.

Local resident Olivia Habermann led the Pledge of Allegiance, Angela Cirillo sang the National Anthem, and Father Carlo Fortunio of St. John’s Church presented the benediction. The ceremony was followed by the second annual Guttenberg Memorial Day barbecue, with many town officials, administrators, and employees pitching in to help out and serve the free food and beverages.

A crowd of several hundred residents attended the event to pay tribute to America’s fallen heroes, to share the afternoon with friends, family, and neighbors, and to enjoy the free hamburgers and hot dogs.

Braddock Park Now Hosting Monthly Flea Market

After a highly successful trial run in May, the Braddock Park Flea Market returned for an even more popular second appearance on Saturday, June 2. More vendors lined the roadway within the park, offering terrific bargains and one-of-a-kind treasures and antiques. Thousands of residents and visitors spent a pleasant day picking through the items on offer.

Based on the strong local response, the flea market is now scheduled for the first Saturday of every month at the same location, 91st off of Bergenline

Avenue in the park. The next Braddock Park Flea Market will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 7.

More than 50 exhibitors are expected to display quality merchandise such as handbags, crafts, sports collectibles, clothing, jewelry, gift items, perfumes, antiques & collectibles, garage/tag sale items, and much more. Visitors can find collectibles, trinkets, and household items for as low at $1 each.

Food is available at the event. Admission is free to the public.

Preventive Medical Event Offers Free Health Screenings to Residents

Mayor Wayne Zitt and the town council in conjunction with the Housing Authority of Guttenberg sponsored a day-long preventive medical event on Tuesday, May 22 at 7005 Boulevard East. The purpose of the event was to bring a full series of medical exams to one location for the convenience of residents, so they didn’t need to schedule multiple visits with different doctors and travel to numerous medical offices or facilities.

Health and wellness screenings were available onsite from two physicians and more than half a dozen technicians. A large turnout of residents kept the medical staff busy from 9 a.m. till almost 8 p.m. (Originally scheduled for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. over two days, the event timing was adjusted to stay open later and accommodate residents who worked during the day.)

Screenings were free to attendees, with everything billed to insurance. The entire battery of diagnostics took between 45 minutes and an hour. Among the many screenings being administered were: Ultrasound of blood flow through the carotid, heart, aorta, and brain; Nerve Conduction tests of the motor and sensory nerves; Allergy tests for animal, plant, and household allergens; Pulmonology tests to determine lung strength; and Pulse Volume Recording (PVK) assessing the arteries of the legs.

All tests were non-invasive and no blood was drawn. Free breakfast and lunch were served on site to attendees. Based on the popularity of the program, the town hopes to make the free screenings an annual event.

The program costs $35 until June 22 for the entire six-week camp. After June 22 the cost is $40. Check, money order, or credit card are accepted. A t-shirt is included while supplies last. There is an additional one-time fee of $10 for children wishing to participate in the bowling league.

Farmers Market Returns to Braddock Park Beginning June 24

The popular Braddock Park Farmers Market will once again bring fresh seasonal favorites to our area beginning June 24. The market will be held every Sunday from June 24 through Sept. 30 at 90th Street and Bergenline Avenue.

Located just inside the north entrance to the park at the Veteran’s Memorial, the farmers market is anchored by a fresh produce stand overflowing with healthy, locally-sourced fruits and vegetables. Cooked food is also available for purchase.

In addition, the market attracts a rotating selection of vendors each week. Some of last year’s vendors offered fresh breads, vegan and gluten-free pastries, homemade soaps, handcrafted crochet items, plants, flowers, and other treats. Local artisans also brought a wide selection of crafts and gift items.

This year’s market will see both returning vendors and new ones, as well as periodic entertainment. The market is sponsored by the Nicholas J. Sacco Foundation and Freeholder Anthony Vainieri.

Second Annual Comic Con Coming to Library

on June 23

The North Bergen Free Public Library is holding their second Comic Con event from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 23 at their uptown location. The free event will feature a costume contest, video games, a raffle with prizes, and other activities, along with special surprise guests.

Summer Concert Series Launches with The

Happenings on July 10

Guttenberg’s popular Summer Concert Series will once again return to Boulevard East and 71st Street alongside Monument Park, but this year it’s also spreading out and hosting events at other locations throughout town.

The first event of the season takes place on Tuesday, July 10 when classic 1960s pop group The Happenings (“See You in September”) bring their timeless rock & roll to 68th Street and Park Avenue. This will be followed by a Billy Joel Tribute on Saturday, July 28 in beautiful Waterfront Park, 7200 River Road.

Then it’s time for the big stage on Boulevard East, with The Infernos on Wednesday, Aug. 15, followed by Rene D’Leon Latino on Saturday, Aug. 25.

Residents Get Healthy Eating Tips at

Nutrition Seminar

About two dozen Guttenberg residents attended a “Cooking with Fiber” seminar sponsored by Mayor Wayne Zitt and the town council on May 10.

The presentation was hosted by Carena Miles, program assistant at the Division of Food & Nutrition, Jersey City Health Department, who discussed fiber intake and the health benefits and nutrients in the grain group. Among her key tips: eat more grain; eat whole grains and not refined grains; and be sure not to skip breakfast. She also provided a recipe for a granola “muscle mix,” and handed out samples.

This was Guttenberg’s first time participating in the seminars from the Division of Food & Nutrition, with more planned on a quarterly basis. Additional topics in the series include summer fruits & vegetables, and cooking for one.

Councilman John Habermann and Town Administrator Cosmo Cirillo were on hand to meet with the attendees – and pick up some health tips from the presenter. Guttenberg Nutritionist and Site Manager Alicia Hernandez coordinated the event.

Senior Dinner Dance Lights Up Mother’s Day

Friday Night Fever hit Guttenberg on May 11 when the town hosted its first Senior Citizens Mother’s Day Dinner & Dance at the Anna L. Klein School. The cafeteria became a dance hall and the dancing didn’t stop for hours on end.

Mayor Wayne Zitt and Councilmembers Richie Delafuente, Monica Fundora, and John Habermann were among the officials greeting the seniors and offering their personal appreciation to mothers everywhere. Numerous other town representatives and employees helped in organizing the event and serving the meal.

Delicious Italian and Latin food was provided by Rose’s Deli and Rumba Cubana, followed by a selection of tasty sweets for dessert. A live DJ spun tunes throughout the evening to keep the party percolating.

Seniors Enjoy Brazilian Music Concert and Lunch

at Houlihan’s

More than 60 senior citizens from Guttenberg made the trip to Lincoln Harbor in Weehawken on Thursday, May 3 to enjoy the free concert “Brazil from A to Z” featuring 14-time Grammy Award winner Paquito D’Rivera. Named a Jazz Master by the National Endowment for the Arts, and recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from Carnegie Hall for his contributions to Latin music, D’Rivera led his trio through a rousing set of instrumental Choro music.

First heard in Rio de Janeiro over a century ago, Choro was influenced by various musical styles and rhythms from Europe and Africa. It is considered the first characteristically Brazilian genre of urban popular music. Choro music is marked by syncopation, counterpoint, improvisation, and virtuosity.

Performing with D’Rivera was mandolin player Danilo Brito, considered one of the finest mandolin players in Brazil and among Choro’s most prominent proponents. He is the recipient of the Premio Visa de Musica Popular Brasileira, the most prestigious award competition for Brazilian music. Joining him on guitar was composer and educator Joao Luiz, whose virtuosity on the instrument has led him to collaborate with Yo-Yo Ma and Carlos Prieto on a project to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Cuban composer Leo Brouwer in a landmark concert in Cuba in 2014.

The performance was followed by a hearty three-course lunch at Houlihan’s, including appetizers and dessert. The afternoon outing was sponsored by Mayor Wayne Zitt and the town council in conjunction with Houlihan’s, and arranged by Senior Services Coordinator Marisol Montañez with assistance from Nutritionist and Site Manager Alicia Hernandez. Three bus trips were required to ferry the crowd of happy seniors back and forth to the event, in addition to those who chose to drive their own cars.

Soldados Caídos Homenajeados en la ceremonia Anual de Memorial Day

El Alcalde Wayne Zitt y los Concejales organizaron una ceremonia anual en Guttenberg del Dia de Memoria DAY en Monument Park el Lunes 28 de Mayo. eL Administrador Municipal Cosmo Cirillo actuó como maestro de ceremonias,

con el Alcalde Zitt ofreciendo un tributo a los soldados norteamericanos y mujeres alistadas en el ejército que murieron sirviendo a nuestro país.

Entre los recordados en el evento fue Privado de Primera clase Felipe Ramírez, quien murio en un accidente de motocicleta en el 2010. Se colocó una ofrenda floral en el monumento en honor del antiguo residente de Guttenberg.

Registre Niños de 5-16 Años Ahora para el Campamento de Verano

La inscripción está abierta ahora para el campamento anual de verano para niños de Guttenberg. El Departamento de Recreación, está ofreciendo de nuevo un día-estilo campamento una experiencia social y educativa para los niños de 5 a 16 años de

edad (debe haber completado el kindergarten), con actividades y juegos estructurados diarios, Viajes de Club Adventure semanales, bolera, Natación, y Artes y Manualidades. Los niños también reciben diariamente un almuerzo y merienda sin costo adicional.

El campamento será de 9 a.m. a 3 p.m. de Lunes a viernes, Lunes 2 de Julio, hasta el Viernes Agosto 10 (no hay campamento el 4 de Julio). Evento de Medicina Preventiva Ofrece

Alcalde Wayne Zitt y los Concejales, en colaboración con la Autoridad de Vivienda de Guttenberg, patrocinó un evento medico preventivo de día entero el Martes, 22 de Mayo en el 7005 Boulevard East. El objetivo del evento fue reunir a toda una serie de exámenes médicos en una ubicación para la comodidad de los residentes, por lo que no se necesita programar varias visitas a diferentes médicos y viajes a numerosos médicos oficinas o instalaciones.

Sesiones de Salud y bienestar estaban disponibles en el sitio de dos médicos y más de media docena de técnicos. Una gran concurrencia de residentes mantuvieron el personal médico ocupado desde las 9 a.m. hasta casi las 8:00 p.m. (originalmente programada para las 9:00 a.m. a 5 p.m. durante dos días, el calendario de eventos fue ajustado para permanecer abierto hasta más tarde y alojar a los residentes que trabajaron durante el día.)

Las evaluaciones fueron gratuitas para los asistentes, con todo facturado a los seguros. Toda la batería de diagnósticos tardó entre 45 minutos y una hora. Más proveedores se alinearon en la calzada dentro del parque, ofreciendo fantásticas ofertas unicas de especie de tesoros y antigüedades. Miles de residentes y visitantes pasaron un agradable día recogiendo a través de los artículos en oferta.

Basado en una fuerte respuesta local, el Mercado de Pulgas ya está programado para el primer Sábado de cada mes en la misma ubicación, 91 de la Avenida Bergenline en el parque. El próximo Mercado de Pulgas en Braddock Park tendrá lugar desde las 9

a.m. hasta las 5 p.m. del Sábado, 7 de Julio.

Segundo Comic Con Anual Llegando a la biblioteca

Residentes Obtienen Consejos para Comer Sano en el Seminario

de NutriciónAproximadamente dos docenas de residentes de Guttenberg asistieron a un seminario de “Cocinar con fibra” patrocinado por el Alcalde Wayne Zitt y el concejo de la ciudad el 10 de Mayo.

La presentación fue auspiciada por Carena Millas, asistente de programa de la División de Alimentos y Nutrición del Departamento de Salud de la Ciudad de Jersey City, quien habló sobre el consumo de fibra y los beneficios para la salud y los nutrientes en el grupo de grano. Mercado de Granjeros Vuelve al Parque Braddock

El popular Mercado Granjero del Parque Braddock volverá a traer favoritos frescos de temporada a nuestra zona a partir del 24 de Junio. El mercado se celebra cada Domingo de Junio 24 a Septiembre 30 en la calle 90 y la Avenida Bergenline.

Situado justo en la entrada norte del parque en el Veteran’s Memorial, el mercado granjero está anclado por un puesto de productos rebosante de productos frescos, sanos de origen local de frutas y verduras. Alimentos cocinados también está disponible para su compra.

Además, el mercado atrae a una selección de proveedores rotando cada semana. Algunos proveedores del año pasado ofrecieron panes frescos, vegan y pastas sin gluten, jabones caseros, elementos bordados hecho a mano , plantas, flores y otras delicias. Los artesanos locales también trajeron una amplia selección de artesanía y artículos de regalo.

Este año el mercado vera tanto a los vendedores que regresan y otros nuevos, así como de entretenimiento periódico. El mercado está patrocinado por la Fundación de Nicholas J. Sacco y el Freeholder Anthony Vainieri.

La Serie de Conciertos de Verano se Inicia con The

El primer evento de la temporada tendrá lugar el Martes, 10 de Julio cuando Clásicos de los 1960 grupo de Pop The Happenings (‘Te Veo en Septiembre”) traen su eterno rock & roll a la 68 Calle y Park Avenue. Esto será seguido por un Tributo a Billy Joel el Sábado, 28 de Julio, en el hermoso Waterfront Park, 7200 y River Road.

Entonces es el momento para el gran escenario en Boulevard East, con The Infernos el Miércoles, 15 de Agosto, seguido por René D’Leon Latino el Sábado 25 de Agosto.

Ancianos Disfrutan Concierto de Música Brasileña y

almuerzo en Houlihan’s

Más de 60 ciudadanos mayores de Guttenberg hizieron el viaje a Lincoln Harbor en Weehawken el Jueves 3 de Mayo, para disfrutar del concierto gratuito “Brasil desde la A a la Z” con el 14 veces ganador del Premio Grammy Paquito D’Rivera. Nombrado maestro de Jazz por el National Endowment for the Arts, y el destinatario de un Lifetime Achievement Award del Carnegie Hall por sus contribuciones a la música latina, D’Rivera llevó su trío a través de un conmovedor conjunto de Música instrumental Choro.

Oído por primera vez en Río de Janeiro hace más de un siglo, el Choro fue influenciado por diversos estilos musicales y ritmos provenientes de Europa y África. Es considerado el primer género típicamente brasileño de música popular urbana. Música Choro está marcada por el contratiempo, contrapunto, improvisación y virtuosismo.

Actuando con D’Rivera fue tocando la mandolina Danilo Brito, considerado uno de los mejores interpretes de la mandolina en Brasil y entre los defensores más destacados del Choro. Él es el destinatario del premio Visa de Musica Popular Brasileira, el más prestigioso galardón de la competencia por la C Brasileña. Uniendose a él en la guitarra fue el compositor y educador João Luiz, cuyo virtuosismo en el instrumento le ha llevado a colaborar con Yo-Yo Ma y Carlos Prieto en un proyecto para celebrar el 75 aniversario del compositor Cubano Leo Brouwer en un histórico concierto en Cuba en 2014.

La actuación fue seguida por un abundante almuerzo de tres platos en el Houlihan’s, incluyendo aperitivos y postres. La excursión de la tarde fue patrocinada por el Alcalde Wayne Zitt y los Concejales junto con el Houlihan, y organizada por la Coordinadora de Servicios de Ancianos Marisol Montañez con la ayuda de una nutricionista y Gerente del lugar Alicia Hernández. Fueron necesarios tres viajes de autobús para llevar la multitud de ancianos felices hacia el evento y de regreso del evento, además de quienes quisieron conducir sus propios automóviles.

Cena Y Baile de Ancianos Ilumina el Día de las Madres

Fiebre de Noche de Viernes se dio en Guttenberg el 11 de Mayo cuando la ciudad albergó su primera cena y baile para ancianos de el Día de las Madres en la Escuela de Anna L. Klein. La cafetería se convirtió en un salón de baile y el baile no paró durante horas.

El Alcalde Wayne Zitt y los Concejales Richie Delafuente, Mónica Fundora, y John Habermann estaban entre los funcionarios saludando a los ancianos y ofreciendo su agradecimiento personal a las madres de todo el mundo. Otros numerosos representantes y empleados de la ciudad ayudaron a organizar el evento y servir la comida.

Deliciosa comida italiana y latína fue proporcionada por Rose’s Deli y la Rumba Cubana, seguida por una selección de sabrosos dulces de postre. Un DJ en vivo toco musica durante toda la noche para mantener la fiesta moviendose.
