spring is in the air.... think golf!i saw a crocus the other day in the
garden and took a few moments to appreciate all that spring has to of-fer. fifteen minutes later, i was back out with my shovel, trying to manually remove the ice that stubbornly lingers in the shady part of my yard. My success was limited, but the warmer weather and rain will soon wash it away and we’ll be returning to a land of warmth after a brutal winter.
our annual black tie Community Awards Gala was held on April 11 at Granite ridge Golf Club (which was a sold out affair) and it was a magnificent event, made possible primarily due to our many business partners that spon-sored the evening. it’s always incredible to see those in our community who give of their time and talents to make our town the most wonderful place to live, work and play. Congratulations to all of the nominees and recipients – each of you deserves a round of applause from the over 100,000 people who call Milton their home. My thanks as well to our co-chairs Melissa deBrouwer and Melissa Janjevich and our Milton Chamber staff for organizing such a fantastic evening. We have a great team!
if you’re like me, you tend to reserve saturday mornings from May to october for a trip along Main street to meet up with friends and to sample local produce, goods and other delicacies from over 40 vendors at our farmers’ Market includ-ing bacon-on-a-bun from our scholarship Café. this year, we’re opening up May 17 but if you can’t wait, take a virtual tour at www.miltonfarmersmarket.ca or follow us on twitter @MarketMilton. for those of you who have a young person in your life preparing to embark on his/her post secondary education in september, you can learn more about our Chamber scholarships (which are open until June 12) by visiting www.miltonchamber.ca/about-chamber/scholarship-fund.
the Chamber is all about provid-ing businesses with an opportunity to connect with each other, including our successful Business After Hours (BAH) events, Milton Young Professionals (MYP) or at our annual golf tournament (AGt…just kidding, we don’t have an acronym for this one). our recent BAH
event in March was hosted by partners Prosperity oNe Credit Union and the CNiB and our next BAH will be in May at Conservation Halton.
our first Milton Business expo (along with a BAH) was held on April 22 at the Milton education Village innova-tion Centre on industrial drive. We were very pleased with the great turnout for this inaugural event, 40 companies pur-chased booths at the expo.
if you’re a young entrepreneur, professionals or senior college and university student, join the Milton Young Professionals group every third Wednesday evening to listen to some excellent speakers. on May 21, they’ll be at Hornby Glen with speaker Colin Best and sponsor Liz Kogan of orchida Words. eddieos Pourhouse and Kitchen on Main street will host the MYP group on June 18 – this event is sponsored by dan Lefave.
Nothing says warm weather like our annual golf tournament – this year, we’re celebrating a quarter century of golfing at the Chamber on tuesday, June 10 at Granite ridge. thank you to Carol Mcdonald, our golf committee chair, and her team. this tournament keeps getting better each year and should be a “must attend” event on your calendar.
regardless if you’re new to Milton, here for years, or expecting visitors this summer, take a few minutes to review the escarpment CountrytM Visitors Guide in the newsletter. Milton is burst-ing at the seams with things to do and places to go!
finally, we have two trips scheduled for Chamber members this year – our first is on May 5 to ireland and the second is a september getaway to Prague and Budapest. Whether you want to kiss the Blarney stone or visit Prague Castle, both are stunning countries replete with history and unsurpassed beauty.

top 10 reasons to sign up for the Milton Chamber Golf tournament
Any day spent in the company of friends and business associates playing golf and having fun, is better than a day at work!
the fact that you are a rusty “sunday Golfer” is no excuse not to play because we have a “duffers” division with its own rules and trophies.
the $175 you’ll spend can easily be justified as a “great value” (includes golf, cart, BBQ lunch, scrumptious dinner, prizes for all and the chance to win a trophy).
the prize you will win can always be brought home to your husband or wife to appease them for the good time you had.
driving a golf cart can help your navigation skills and hand-eye coordination for the next time you have a meeting downtown.
the cooking is probably far better than you can do yourself – choice of steak, shrimp, salmon or chicken plus hot veggies, salads and delicious desserts… lunch is included as well!
Your communication skills and vocabulary will be enhanced…“fore”; “drat”; “gosh-darned”, etc.
You can practice your basic accounting skills (par + bogey + eagle – mulligan = ??)
You will get fresh air and exercise which will help with your overall business productivity.
it’s a great opportunity to network with 280 local business people.

Nestled at the foot of the scenic Niagara escarpment, the Milton farmers’ Market has been bringing farm-fresh goodness and old-fashioned hospitality to Main street, in downtown Milton, since 1972. our farmers proudly display “picked fresh this morning” produce and the streets come alive with artisans and flower ven-dors. the Milton Chamber of Commerce operates the weekly saturday morning event from May through october and is one of ontario’s best outdoor farmers’ Markets. the 2014 market will host over 40 vendors.
the market has made its home in sev-eral locations over the past 41 years from its beginning in the town Hall parking lot, to the Carriage square (former sunoco service station) parking lot, to the present Main street location.
the Market moved to Main street in June 1990 and has enjoyed the downtown atmosphere since that time. our vendors work in a spirit of cooperation with down-town merchants and together are respon-sible for attracting thousands of shoppers every year! the Milton farmers’ Market is one of the only ontario farmers’ Markets where the street is closed down and pedes-
trians are free to stroll and visit with local vendors and businesses.
the farmers’ Market gives people a true sense of community and is a great meeting place for friends, family and neighbours. People from the community are able to purchase fresh produce directly from the local farmers and help to support the community in which they live.
the most popular spot at the market is the Chamber scholarship Café, home of the “bacon-on-a-bun”. the café sells this de-lectable treat to all visitors to the market. the Café is also operated by the Chamber and generates funds for the Chamber scholarship fund which offers annual scholarships to all local high schools. A great breakfast for a great cause!
All across ontario, shoppers are choos-ing farmers’ Markets for nature’s best produce, secure in the knowledge that the food is fresh, safe to eat and the next best thing to harvesting it yourself. People come to meet the vendors who nurtured seedlings into plants, picked the fruit, pulled the vegetables, baked mouth-water-ing bread and other treats, prepared delec-table jams, jellies and other preserves and loaded their trucks early in the morning to
bring their products to town. they come to chat, to learn, to leave with tips about per-fect ripeness, food preparation and even a recipe or two. they come to connect with the land, many with their own baskets and bags ready to carry seasonal flavours home to their kitchens -- maybe stopping for a nibble on the way. if you haven’t joined them yet, now is the time. farmers’ Mar-kets ... good for the body, good for the soul!
visit us onLinE!Visit the Milton farmers’ Market web-
site at www.miltonfarmersmarket.ca for some farm fresh fun!
the Milton farmers’ Market website has a fresh look and feel, easy navigation and refreshed content for visitors who come to the market. the site includes a vendor directory, photo gallery and market calendar.

shortlisted companies invited to bid on Milton district Hospital expansion
infrastructure ontario and Halton Healthcare services have released a request for proposals to the three teams shortlisted to design, build, finance and maintain the Milton district Hospital expansion project.
A request for qualifications process that began in August 2013 shortlisted the top three companies with the development, design, construction, financial and facilities management capacity to undertake a project of this size and complexity. the three shortlisted companies invited to bid are Hospital infrastructure Partners, Milton Healthcare Partnership and Plenary Health.
the expansion project will focus on increasing the most in-demand services and facilities at Milton district Hospital. this includes: emergency, surgical, critical care, maternal newborn, diagnostic imaging and support services, as well as medical/surgical inpatient units. With connections to the existing facility, the new addition will significantly increase the size of the hospital.
the new addition will target the Canada Green Building Council’s Leadership in energy and environmental design (Leed®) silver certification. Leed® buildings focus on healthy indoor environments, reduced greenhouse gas emissions and efficient use of energy, water and other resources.
once submissions to the request for proposals are received and evaluated, the successful project team is expected to be selected and announced in spring 2015. Construction is expected to begin shortly after.
infrastructure ontario and the Ministry of Health and Long-term Care are working with Halton Healthcare services to develop the Milton district Hospital which will be publicly owned and publicly controlled.
infrastructure ontario is a crown agency of the Province of ontario that delivers large, complex infrastructure renewal projects on time and on budget. over the last six years, the province has applied infrastructure ontario’s alternative financing and procurement model to 83 major projects valued at approximately $38 billion, saving taxpayers an estimated $3 billion. infrastructure ontario also manages one of the largest real estate portfolios in Canada, provides municipalities and eligible public sector clients with financing to renew public infrastructure, and leverages its private-sector expertise to manage major commercial transactions on behalf of the province.
Halton Healthcare services is a multi-site healthcare organization that operates three community hospitals in the towns of oakville, Milton and Halton Hills. Located in one of the fastest growing regions in the province, Halton Healthcare services is committed to growing with its communities.

town of Milton and Wilfrid Laurier University pursue Milton campus
following the announcement from the Province of ontario inviting universities to submit proposals for new or expanded campuses in underserved areas, the town of Milton has reaffirmed its relationship with Wilfrid Laurier University and supports the university’s plans to submit a proposal for a Milton campus.
the town and Laurier have been working together since 2008 with the intent of developing a 150-acre campus in Milton within the Milton education Village.
“on behalf of Milton Council, we look forward to continuing positive relationships with our partners at the Provincial government and Laurier,” said town of Milton Mayor Gord Krantz. “A university campus in Milton will enable us to realize our vision for a complete and prosperous community.”
“We are very pleased to be moving forward with our Milton campus proposal in partnership with the town of Milton,” said Laurier President Max Blouw. “A Laurier campus in Milton will bring
innovative and accessible post-secondary education to the region and play a key role in the social and economic development of the community.”
“if our partners at the Province are looking to develop a new campus in a community where students can pursue undergraduate studies close to home, there is no better place than Milton,” added Mayor Krantz. “With Milton’s young demographics and our plans for growth that will see Milton more than double in the next 15 years, the demand for a university campus in this area will only continue to grow.”
in the meantime, the town’s plans for the Milton education Village (MeV) are well underway. the Milton education Village innovation Centre opened to the public in early 2014 as a hub for entrepreneurship in Milton, offering collaborative space, acceleration/incubation, business services, and education and training. the location at 555 Industrial Drive will serve as the first stage of the innovation centre while plans for the Milton education Village (MeV)
advance. the Mattamy National Cycling Centre
(velodrome) will also be an integral part of the Milton education Village. Construction of the velodrome began in february 2013, and is expected to be completed in late summer 2014. the velodrome will serve as both a multi-use, community recreational facility and a host venue for indoor track cycling events, most notably for the toroNto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games.

employers endorse PrPPs as solution to ontario’s pension problems
A new report from the ontario Cham-ber of Commerce (oCC) and Certified General Accountants of ontario (CGA ontario) reveals that ontario’s employers do not support a made-in-ontario pension plan. the report, An employer Perspec-tive on fixing ontario’s Pension Problem, identifies Pooled registered Pension Plans (PrPPs) as employers’ preferred solution to helping ontarians better prepare for their retirement.
As part of the consultation process, the oCC and CGA ontario hosted seven employer roundtable discussions across the province. the two organizations, in partnership with Leger Marketing, also surveyed close to 1,000 companies.
the result – employers worry that the current pension system in ontario is unsustainable. in fact, more than seventy percent of employers surveyed stated that pension reform should be a top govern-ment priority.
employers identified a number of prin-ciples that should inform pension reform, including:
• Pension reform should not dimin-ish ontario’s long-term competi-tiveness;
• Pension reform should target those that need pension assistance;
• Pension reformshould build upon ontario’s global expertise in pen-sion investment; and
• employers support pan-Canadian solutions, not province-specific reforms that further fragment and complicate Canada’s pension landscape.
eighty-six percent of employers sur-veyed support introducing PrPPs in on-tario. far fewer supported enhancing the
Canada Pension Plan or the introduction of an ontario Pension Plan. only 31 per-cent of the respondents to our survey who support the CPP enhancement support the idea of a made-in-ontario solution.
“employers recognize that there are no quick and easy fixes,” according to Allan o’dette, President and Ceo of the ontario Chamber of Commerce. “ontario’s pension problem requires a long-term perspective and a comprehensive solution that results in seniors having adequate replacement income when they retire. employers felt that PrPPs were the best solution to help-ing ontarians save more.”
Pooled registered Pension Plans are workplace pensions managed by regulated financial service providers and specifi-cally targeted to small and medium enter-prises.
“discussions clearly highlighted employers’ concerns, placing emphasis on the importance of improved financial literacy and retirement planning,” says doug Brooks, fCGA, Ceo of CGA ontario. “ontarians of all ages must understand the need to prepare for their retirement to ensure they will be able to maintain their standard of living.”
the report argues that ontario’s long term economic prosperity depends on the ability of the approaching large cohort of retirees to maintain their purchasing power.

on the announcement of the free trade agreement with south Korea, Perrin Beatty, President and Ceo of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce issued the following statement:
“Concluding a free trade agreement with south Korea is an important achievement in Canada’s effort to forge stronger business ties with fast-growing economies in Asia. This has been a difficult negotiation for Canada, and i commend the government for its leadership in restarting talks and reaching an agreement with south Korea that will permit greater access to the south Korean market for Canadian goods and services.
this deal with south Korea is Canada’s first in Asia and will add momentum to other negotiations, including the trans-Pacific Partnership and bilateral talks with Japan.
during my visit to south Korea last fall, I saw first-hand how Canadian companies were losing their footing in the market to competitors from other countries. some were even making the difficult choice to shut down their marketing offices.
south Korea is Asia’s fourth largest economy, with a market of $1.1 trillion. there are growth opportunities across many industries: agri-food, aerospace, infrastructure, energy, chemicals, forestry
and financial services—the list goes on. reducing and eliminating trade and investment barriers here will boost exports and create new jobs. We look forward to the final text so that we can conduct a complete assessment of the benefits,” said Mr. Beatty.
in January, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce welcomed progress in the bilateral talks, but outlined the need for strong enforcement measures and flexibilities to ensure the continued competitiveness of Canada’s automotive sector.
the Canadian Chamber of Commerce is the vital connection between business and the federal government. it helps shape public policy and decision-making to the benefit of businesses, communities and families across Canada with a network of over 450 chambers of commerce and boards of trade, representing some 200, 000 businesses of all sizes in all sectors of the economy and in all regions. follow us on twitter @CdnChamberofCom.

Has Corporate social responsibility become an essential pillar of business?Written by Jared Brox
Corporate social responsibility (Csr) – aka corporate conscience or corporate citizenship – is essentially the idea that businesses and corporations have a responsibility as members of society to ensure compliance with laws, ethical standards, and cultural norms and should actively seek out opportunities to impact change in the world around them.
Csr initiatives can help bolster a company’s public image. Making corporate social responsibility an essential business pillar has become almost standard practice, and with good reason. Consumers will support and promote a company they respect and believe to be making a positive impact.
And while there are many benefits beyond making a positive impact on the world for companies who embrace their corporate social responsibility, it can often be a delicate balancing act between sincerity and Pr stunt.
a tHin LinE to WaLKWhen done correctly, Csr strategies
are honest and mutually beneficial for the company and their cause. However, there are less scrupulous companies who have no problem feigning social responsibility to boost the bottom line.
for example, “greenwashing” is the term given to the practice of deceptively promoting environmentally friendly business practices or products when in reality more effort is put into promoting the company as “green” than producing actual “green” benefits.
it’s vitally important for those companies that are striving in earnest to make a difference, to clearly and effectively communicate their intentions. And while there will always be skeptics who will question a business’ true motivation for engaging corporate social responsibility strategies, it’s actually quite surprising – and encouraging – to learn just how serious many “mega-corporations” take their role in building a better world.
WHo’s Doing it RigHt?one of the most recent and clear-
cut examples of corporate social responsibility is drug store giant CVs Caremark discontinuing sales of tobacco products at its more than 7,600 stores. it’s a move that CVs estimates will cost the company approximately $2 billion in lost revenue annually, but as CVs president and Ceo Larry J. Merlo, puts it:
“ending the sale of cigarettes and
tobacco products at CVs is the right thing for us to do for our customers and our company to help people on their path to better health. Put simply, the sale of tobacco products is inconsistent with our purpose.”
the move to end tobacco sales, while definitely risky for CVs, has been widely praised and has only helped to raise awareness of the company’s commitment to integrity and their purpose. it will be interesting to watch in the coming years if this is the beginning of a trend. if a company like CVs is willing to take a $2 billion hit, will others be more willing to follow suit?
Google has also made quite a name for itself through its corporate social responsibility initiatives and is just another example of a massive corporation using its considerable resources to make an impact on the world.
According to a recent forbes article on companies that consistently rank the highest in corporate social responsibility, “in the past three years, Google has donated over $353 million in grants worldwide, approximately $3 billion in free ads, apps, and products, and Googlers have volunteered approximately

6,200 total days of employee time to support nonprofits (a total of 150,000 hours).”
Whole foods Market is another company that consistently receives high marks for its corporate social responsibility. in fact, John Mackey, the company’s co-founder and co-Ceo, has developed the concept of “conscious capitalism.” According to the “Conscious
Capitalist Credo,”“Conscious Capitalism is a way of
thinking about capitalism and business that better ref lects where we are in the human journey, the state of our world today, and the innate potential of business to make a positive impact on the world.”
Mackey co-founded the Conscious
Capitalism Movement to challenge business leaders to rethink why their organizations exist, and to acknowledge their roles in the global marketplace. in his book “Conscious Capitalism, Liberating the Heroic spirit of Business,” Mackey lays out his case for re-imagining capitalism and the responsibility businesses bear to ensure their practices are grounded in ethical consciousness.
csR isn’t Just FoR Big coRPoRationson a smaller scale, there is a trend
of many companies basing the core of their business model on the concept of corporate social responsibility. two of the more well-known examples include tom’s and Warby Parker.
tom’s truly touched a nerve in their customer base with their “one for one”
concept, which in a nutshell, means that for every pair of shoes the company sells, they donate a pair to someone in need in countries around the world. Warby Parker employs a similar concept for its eyewear.
an iMPoRtant RoLE to PLayCorporate social responsibility
is a powerful business strategy with
the potential to significantly impact the world we live in. And while, there definitely are financial, marketing, and Pr benefits for companies that actively engage in socially responsible activities, it’s still an important role that businesses can play. And, hopefully, a trend that will continue to spread.

Prosperity oNe, proud community supporters
Prosperity oNe’s corporate social responsibility initiatives link our values of appreciation, respect, integrity and adaptability with our commitment to community. two main areas that we support through our Community development fund are education and health/physical well being – both are funded primarily through our annual golf tournament. in 2013, our tournament raised over $16,000 – our most successful to date. in Milton, we are pleased to have supported many organizations including the Milton Christian school, Milton Concert Presentations, Milton film festival Committee, escarpment View Public school, Milton Community Nursery school and Milton transitional Housing (MtH), an organization that provides support to those who are working towards obtaining secure housing by providing them with affordable transitional housing.
on february 22, our team iCe iCe BABY participated in the Coldest Night of the Year, a five kilometer fundraising walk to raise funds for MtH. thank you to all those who supported our team – with your help, we were the top fundraiser in Milton, providing over $3,600 for MtH. We would also like to thank the ontario Credit Union Charitable foundation (oCUCf) and our Community development fund for collectively
donating $2,000 to this great cause. in total, our Milton community raised over $40,000, which was $10,000 over the original goal. together, we were proud to help make a difference to families in Milton.
in 2013, Prosperity oNe donated $5,000 to the Halton Learning foundation (HLf) to support literacy programs at escarpment View Public school in Milton. our team in Milton also volunteered their time to read to students in their junior and senior kindergarten classes every other Wednesday for two hours. our support through literacy initiatives has provided each child with the benefit of having additional resources on hand to help them develop a positive outlook on learning.
our presence in the Milton community keeps growing and we were proud to sponsor this year’s family day skate on february 17 at the Milton sports Centre. this special day gives families the opportunity to participate in a wide array of activities and provides them with the chance to spend time together, relaxing and having fun.
our Prosperity oNe team live, work and play in our community of Milton and together, we are dedicated to creating a culture of enhanced appreciation and support for others.

Roxul announces new corporate officeroXUL inc. announced its’ plans
to build a new North American headquarters located on esquesing Line in Milton, ontario. the new 25,000 square foot head office will house approximately 100 employees from roXUL and its’ sister companies.
“roXUL inc., has been part of the Milton community for 25 years, and we are thrilled to be constructing our own head office after leasing space since the expansion of our Milton factory in 2007.” roXUL President, trent ogilvie.
“roXUL’s stone wool insulation products reduce energy use and minimize the impacts of climate change. As a global leader in energy efficient building solutions, ensuring that our new North American headquarters is an example of environmental excellence, and demonstrating what can be achieved
in building construction is of paramount importance to us” continued ogilvie.
the building is a design/build project by stahle Construction, and will be among the lowest energy use buildings in Canada and will meet Leed Gold standards. roXUL’s energy design Centre has been involved in the building envelope design, and will be built to approximately 35% over typical energy model codes, resulting in significant energy savings. the new building will go beyond just exceeding building code and will include environmental design details such as motioned sensored lights, and HVAC systems, drought resistant landscaping, rain water harvesting, and grey water reuse.
Construction of the facility is expected to begin in spring 2014 with occupancy scheduled for december 2014.
